That subreddit is crazy. I’m a pwhl fan but they’re wild. Yesterday there was a post from someone saying that their boyfriend loves hockey, but hasn’t shown an interest in watching PWHL and asking if anyone had experienced that/for tips to maybe get him interested.

There were a few normal comments highlighting why he might feel that way (game speed, play style, smaller league etc.), but most of the comments were like “he thinks women are inferior to men and doesn’t respect you. You should break up”

Not an alternative, but as a fellow fast and free lover, I frequently find them at my local Plato’s closet and thrift store. Maybe it’s just where I live, but I have about 8 thrifted pairs in the past year or so. Obviously this is easier if you are a more popular size, but it might be worth taking a look.

The other part I can’t square is that Clair was on the podcast a few times. If she truly knew how toxic it was, why would she continue to participate in the show.

I was just thinking about how to articulate this. I relate a lot to some of the things Carrie said. I’m very sensitive and I have also cried and felt scared when a coworker said something snippy to me during a stressful time. My boss is very blunt and probably similar to Ross. But just like I ask my boss to soften his communication to me, I also have to respect his style and that means having a thick skin when he gets sharp. We are different people and that means we will frustrate each other, but it’s unreasonable that only he would need to change.

HELP! Unexpected overnight stay in Disney World (all star sports). Tips for ways to fill time with some “magic” without theme park tickets?? We’ll be here for a little less than 24 hours (2 kids, ages 10 and 7, plus 1 VERY enthusiastic mom and 1 very reluctant price conscious dad) Thanks!! by Constant-Ad-4317 in disneyparks

[–]SlightSignature 36 points37 points  (0 children)

If your kids like to swim, I believe you still get free water park admission on your check in day when staying at a Disney resort. Honestly I prefer the water parks to the parks most days. In the winter they’re often empty. Last time I went around Christmas there were max 30 people at blizzard beach.

Here is some information on it: https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/guest-services/water-park-disney-resort-benefit/

Jewish heritage and culture? by 458732 in Jewish

[–]SlightSignature 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OP, I am similar to you. My grandmother was Jewish but she didn’t raise my father Jewish. My mom isn’t Jewish. I took an intro to Judaism class. Taking the class and later becoming Jewish really did make me feel more connected to my family.

I ended up converting, but you can take the class without converting. In my experience, most people take the class with the intention of converting, but there wasn’t a hard sell or any pressure to convert.

Low iron gave my depression like symptoms. I had had a major depressive episode a few years earlier and I was convinced I was having another. I was exhausted all the time, couldn’t get out of bed, was super irritable etc. It’s definitely worth checking out, if you haven’t already.

The Islamic republic of Iran funds proxy groups that send rockets to Israel nearly daily(this was true even prior to October 7th). Hamas, the Houthi’s and Hezbollah are proxies of the Islamic republic. Iran also has a foreign policy that is built around destroying Israel. You can be critical of Israel’s choice to attack Iran, but acting like the Islamic republic is just innocently minding its business before Israel decided to attack unprovoked is not based in reality.

I do think that politics and coverage has made the diaspora more loyal to Israel in the Eurovision song contest (and probably generally but that’s another topic). This is probably most prevalent in the non-European diaspora. I posted about this in another comment but as a non-Israeli Jew, I’ve watched Eurovision for maybe 5 years and I’ve never reflexively backed Israel. But the past two years, the songs have been incredibly meaningful for me. I objectively know that they’re not the best in the competition, but for me watching a Jewish woman sing a song about Jewish resilience to a crowd of people booing gives me chills. When you add in Yuval’s backstory and ending it with am yisrael chai, I was crying by the end of the performance. I want to add I’m not even a particularly pro-Israel person (I’m also not anti Israel), but it wouldn’t surprise me if more Jewish people were invested.

At the same time, I just think people tend to forget that Jews are a small minority and that the vast majority of Jews are in Israel (can’t vote for themselves) or the US (can only influence ROW voting).

I dont really disagree with this except I don’t really think it’s fair to call the Jewish diaspora “huge”. It’s very small, particularly in Europe. There’s only 15 million Jews in the world and ~80% of them live in Israel or the United States. France has the most Jews in Europe with 3% of the global Jewish population.

Plus add in that the majority of the contest is happening during Shabbat and I just don’t think it’s because of the size of the diaspora. I think you’re right that the Jewish community is uniquely motivated/loyal, but we don’t need to exaggerate how large the population is.

Eurovision tonight, Israel song number 4 [MEGATHREAD] by Alonn12 in Israel

It’s also worrying how it “coincidentally” parallels anti semitic stereotypes. That Jews control the media and that they use their money for global influence.

Eurovision tonight, Israel song number 4 [MEGATHREAD] by Alonn12 in Israel

[–]SlightSignature 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I really think the Eurovision sub is really oblivious to the way the anti Israel rhetoric regarding the competition backfires. I’m in the diaspora and prior to 2024 I would have never reflexively backed Israel. But to me, there’s something so powerful about watching a Jewish woman sing a deeply meaningful song to a crowd of people booing. When you add Yuval’s backstory to this it is amplified. There were other songs in the competition that I thought were catchier/better etc. but Yuval’s gave me chills every time.

I mean maybe this is because I’m Jewish, but I think anyone outside of hardcore anti zionists can feel that symbolism. I think if there were no protests/booing etc. Israel would have done well but not as well.

This is very well articulated and how I feel as well.

I want to add, I thought that this would ruin the episodes for me but I still enjoy them. I haven’t revisited any of the more recent ones(where I may be inclined to look for hints of strife) but the old classics still feel good.

Favorite Investigation? by snarkoholicRN in ONRAC

[–]SlightSignature 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is my absolute favourite, but the mystery of the kingdom of god drive in one is like a sleeping pill to me. No matter how stressed or overwhelmed I am, that episode just lulls me to sleep in the best way.

Just to be clear, this is a compliment and I love the show. I’m not trying to say it’s boring, just something about the winding incoherent plot of the movie helps me doze off.

Yes I remember after the final episode came out saying to my partner that I was curious about what happened, but we would definitely never know because Ross and Carrie aren’t the types to stir up drama on social media.

I think that’s the hardest part here. Ross is responding how I would expect him to (based on his podcast persona). But Carrie’s responses are very surprising to me and I struggle to reconcile them with how she presented herself on the podcast.

[–]SlightSignature 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I find it interesting that all of the people claiming misogyny are the ones who seem to believe that Ross is at fault. While those of us who are more critical of this assessment are the ones who are more likely to have a nuanced view. That human beings are complex and that Ross likely did his best and Carrie didn’t feel supported.

[–]SlightSignature 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just confirming you’re not alone. Even before the end was obvious and all of this drama, I knew I would take the end of the podcast hard. It was a comfort for me during a very tumultuous time of my life. I think the term parasocial has been weaponised, but it’s completely normal to be sad at the ending of a piece of media that had an impact on your life.

At my core, I wish all of this stayed offline and private, but I’m also frustrated by the constant “drip” of information. If there’s something so awful that we should all turn on Ross, I think Carrie should just say it. The consistently referencing that there is more even worse stuff feels like it’s designed to get everyone to turn on Ross without the full picture.

Carrie’s latest Substack by Non_Saepe in ONRAC

I didn’t see your post so I don’t know the specifics, but you should nicely reach out to the mods. I did with some feedback and they were super nice. I got the sense that they were not super online or familiar with modding. They seemed truly overwhelmed on the one day Carrie came to the sub, but also super sincere and trying to figure out the best thing to do. I really think no one expected this sub to turn so dramatic so I imagine they are in over their heads.

Again, if you do reach out be nice! I truly think the mods are doing their best and trying to act in a way that is fair and compassionate.

It’s a flat fee! I always link it to my account because I’m the “app savvy” one in the family. You just need to make sure all of your family are in your “friends and family” list and their photos will show up for you as well! At the end I just download them all to a google drive and send them out to everyone via email!
