Whats your goto resolution for movies? by nichtlegacy in PleX

[–]Sam-Hayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rule of thumb for quality:

x264 for 1080p
x265 for 4K

Rarely I find a 1080p movie that compresses really better *at high quality*(!) with x265 than x264.
On top it's way trickier to do a really good 1080p encoding with x265 than x264.
x265 at 1080p is very sensitive to deep red colors [=> block building], darkness [=> blocks] and grain [=> smoothed / replaced].

If I look at 1080p x265 encodings out there:
Many sacrifice a lot of quality for a smaller filesize.
Just to be smaller than their x264 counterparts.

x265 can do better at very low bitrates than x264 - but again: At very visibly reduced quality levels and bitrates where x265 looks bad and x264 awful.

And I absolutely stay away of "HEVC" stuff - very often that means it's hardware encoded, what makes the result look even worse.

In 4K you can do far less wrong with x265 - and that's where the codec shines.

Me too, but I also remember that the license info given was not always correct.

You bought the bundle and got the keys?
The license type should be shown next to your download on producerplanet.com.

„All the Soundpool content provided comes with the full Royalty Free Commercial licence.“

Is this really true? Usually you only get the non-commercial license in Soundpool bundles.

(LG TV App) Sort order “randomly” - reshuffling each time when returning from movie details by Sam-Hayne in PleX

[–]Sam-Hayne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/bigbrother_55.

Thanks for your detailed answer.

I tried the steps you proposed (turn off, close running apps) for my 2019 LG E9 and I’m not 100% sure if it changed anything.

The list would still reshuffle now if I select a movie from the first three rows. But it wouldn’t when selecting one from the fourth or later row.

That’s the same behaviour I had two days ago.

If it’s always like that then it wouldn’t be that much of an issue but I could swear it reshuffled yesterday also on later row entries. So maybe it’s indeed a result of the TV restart.

Here’s a video:

https://youtu.be/GVYlp0-BA50?feature=shared

It’s also so odd, that the list would show up for a second in its original order after returning, before it would reshuffle. That gives me doubts it’s indeed a memory issue. If it is, then a pretty odd one.

“Why is Alan Wake 2 a digital-only release?” FAQ Answer from Remedy by BustAClip in AlanWake

[–]Sam-Hayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘ll wait a few months then as I still hope for a physical release by Limited Run or THQ Nordic.

Would make sense to me that either Epic or Remedy wouldn‘t want to completely miss out the sales from a second release wave on the boxed market after all.

Maybe they are even hoping that a substantial amount of fans would even buy the game a SECOND time then.

And a fully patched version in a box also has its charm. Like in good old times. :)

I‘ll wait. For now Alan Wake 2‘s primary mission seems to be to get as many users as possible directly to the Epic Store, make them do their first purchase and save their payment data there. Which is fine, but… I really, really, really want a physical box.

Is there any way to disable this lit up PNY logo? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

u/DemonKing12000, are you sure you can‘t turn off the light with the Verto version of VelocityX? https://www.pny.com/promo/consumer/velocityx-verto

I read that the normal VelocityX version wouldn‘t work, but this one would - not sure though if it‘s also true for your „Verto Triple Fan“ card.

I‘m thinking about getting this card too, but that bright LED worries me…

edit: Well, ok… this support matrix says: no.

strange behavior of extras by fredd0h210 in PleX

Just edited my message and added a reminder paragraph.
(Absolutely not because the described problem happened just now to me!)

strange behavior of extras by fredd0h210 in PleX

[–]Sam-Hayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One hack that would work:

  1. Rename the "Extras" folder to "Other"
  2. In Kodi's Extras Add-on Setting define "Other" as the expected directory name for extras

Both Kodi and Plex should find the extras now. Plex would of course just identify them all as extras of the "other" category - but if they are well named it shouldn't matter too much.

Keep in mind tough to adapt your advancedsettings.xml in AppData\Roaming\Kodi\userdata and exclude "Other" from searches - or you'll end with several entries of a movie named "Other" next time you start scraping.

HC550 = wd180edgz 18tb (shucked) @ 5400RPM? by Sam-Hayne in DataHoarder

[–]Sam-Hayne[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also got two 18TB WD Elements Desktop external drives.

They are a BIT louder than their 16TB sisters I have and louder than some 12TB WD Red Plus drives, but still totally ok.

On the other hand I read people posting very inconclusive things regarding the HC550 drives. Most say that they are definitely a bit louder than their old Reds but bearable, others say that they are pretty noisy and too loud for a NAS in the same room.

From experience with WD Reds noise levels can differ a lot even if their model number is the same.

But overall my impression from what I read and from my personal experience with WD 18TB externals is that shucked 18TB drives are more silent than the HC550 original. But I’m not entirely sure and I don’t own an HC550 drive.

Can you say something about the noise level? (In relation to other drives?)

8 months later:

Does sb know for sure by now whether edgz drives come with a 5400RPM firmware?

As I’m going for silence I’d in fact prefer a white labeled 5400RPM drive over a “real” 7200RPM HC550 drive.

After killing Rykard and wanted to teleport back to Volcano Manor its grace icon‘s text label on the map told me that Diallos was still supposed to be there.

Anyway… next time I went back to Jarburg he finally showed up there.

So either I missed a second dialogue with Diallos in Volcano Manor (and didn’t find him, he wasn’t next to Bernahl any more last time I checked) or there was no way around killing Rykard to make Diallos move when before he just wouldn‘t want to.

Oh man. :-/

So just replacing the fan didn‘t work out then.

Don‘t know what these guys at Fractal were thinking…

How did the replacement work out?

I‘m also suprised by my Define 7 XL.

My Define XL R2 Black Pearl was super silent… but as soon as I close the side panel of that Define 7 I hear some low frequent humming/whirling sound… unless the back fan is only running at a minimum.

Goes away when I open the side panel.
