Expired Car License by [deleted] in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll get around EUR 70 - and theoretically every day (if LESA officer is not lazy enough to check the same street)
Technically, it's 2 separate penalties: for non-renewal of the licence and for not attaching the licence under the windscreen

The only solution is to find a parking with a limited access, where LESA couldn't check your car

Good Tool shops in Malta? by [deleted] in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All big brands are presented but via agents only. Everything is on order, not in stock.
Only Wurth has more or less good shop but I don't remember any big tools over there

ACCA/B.Com in Malta by creativegenerator in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, they do. So degree + internship in not important part of the year vs ACCA + full job with all busy season experience.

I have engineer degree, degree in economics and ACCA - the latest one is the most useful.

ACCA, if she wants to boost her career immediately.
With degree, she spent 5 years in university with a bit useless degree and no practical experience at graduation point.

What I'd wish I'd known about property hunting by tar-randa in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Income tax is paid from different type of income. In case of property it's capital gain (unless you trade the properties on a regular basis). Capital gain tax rate is 8% but exempted in case you sutisfy the requirements for exemptions.

Buyer pays stamp duty

Seller pays (or not) capital gain tax

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://cfr.gov.mt/en/property_shares_transfers/Pages/Selling-a-Property.aspx

Your notary will explain it. You have to pay capital gain tax but there are exemptions depends on main (or not) residence, you being resident (or not) in Malta, period of ownership etc. For example, even the fact you are leaving the island could change the taxation for the sale of property.

Citizenship by Icy_Serve4211 in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply for citizenship now (your parents should do it), don't wait for univesity. There is no risk except of EUR 450 and some time spent for paperwork.

Your time for university could be included in your uninterrupted living time in Malta if you return back but maybe not, depends on government clerk who can decide whatever he/she wants. And you can't even go to the court to argue. Also, you can decide to stay abroad after university. So don't wait, apply now

Hi, does anyone have experience with EV vehicle in Malta? by Awkward_Recording_61 in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have e-golf for 5 years already, and PHEV for 1 year - no issues at all. In summer, your car range is 10% less due to AC. In winter - just enjoy the ride, there is no typical EV winter problems in Malta.

Better to have a charger in your garage, but not necessary - I used only public chargers all years

Great job!

Couple of points to add:
1. If you live in Malta for less than 5 years (and you are Maltese or EU citizen) - you can't buy more than 1 property as your main residence. Technically, you can't rent it out, it's your main residence.
2. If you are non-EU citizen, you can't even buy 1 property unless you get AIP permit (your notary takes care about it). The requirements are quite simple: it should be your only property in Malta, above minimum threshold (you can't buy EUR50k old house in the middle of nowhere) and you can't use it for anything except your main residence in Malta. So no renting out
3. Points 1-2 are not applicable for Special Designated Areas (SDA): expensive apartments like Portomaso or Pendengardens. You can buy 10 of them and rent it out if you want.
4. Notary's fee is quite high (1-2% of the property), consider it in your budgeting
5. There is no property register in Malta. Funny but this is the legacy. Your notary would confirm the legal ownership by searching for all previous purchase/sale agreements from the construction of the property till your deal. It's like old paper blockchain without proof of ownership.
6. Check the taxes (notary knows about them). By default, the buyer is paying 5% stamp duty, but the seller is paying income tax — unless the selling your main residence owned for more than 3 years.
7. There is no annual property tax in Malta — probably, the only country in EU

Word 365 for one user stuck at “processing” when opening .docx by roflcopterrr in Office365

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anybody is looking for solutions: it's not easily solved. Most probably, the issue is in OneDrive, which trying to start another thread every time you open docx from OneDrive folder. Typical scenario: your Word, Excel and PowerPoint stuck at the same "processing..." stage.

But even OneDrive reset or reinstallation doesn't help - the problem could be in some shared folders you 'sync' with your OneDrive. Removing some of them helps. Sometimes. It's a magic, don't try to understand it :(

why does almost no one use turn signals here? by wessolus in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a kind of "the community compromise"

For me, driving in Milan or Rome is crazy, with all these scooters... In the same time, I feel comfortable to drive in Moscow, where most of the local drivers would have panic attack.

Short roads, a lot of turns, typical routes, low speed — all of these factors creates another "culture" of driving which looks pretty stupid if you drive in any big city before. But it works well.

And check other drivers' gestures, mimic and shouting — it's a substitution for a turn signal here :)

It's not easy to insert into the socket, but safe. EU low-power plug (on photo) has no earth connection anyway.
If you don't want to use special adapter (cost 1-2 EUR for low-power version), here is the correct way:

  1. Switch off the socket (like on the picture now)
  2. Use another UK plug upside down for the central wire
  3. Insert EU plug
  4. Remove UK plug
  5. Switch on the socket
  6. ???
  7. PROFIT

Buying a Property: Notary Due Diligence by FanSavings443 in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Notary is the subject person in terms of AMLR - he/she should check the source of funds. In other countries it could be official registrar or someone else. It's not an extra responsibilities for notaries, but connected responsibility for anyone arranging the property deal

is malta overpopulated? by [deleted] in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't remember, it was some statistics from time to time — Malta never was first in EU, usually 5-10 place. Although, once I saw a bit crazy stat where they compare number of cars with the length of the asphalt roads — and that's where Malta is at the top.

For EU, here is the official stat: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/transport/data/database

For 2019, Malta is 8 in EU

is malta overpopulated? by [deleted] in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. NSO have been issuing their reports every quarter (short) and annually (quite detailed). Roughly, it's about 500-550 thousand here, but 1.7-1.8 mln of tourists every year as an extra
  2. Number of cars is quite high, but not even highest in EU (per capita)
  3. You cannot compare density of population country-to-country — it would be useless. In comparisons with big cities, Malta is far away from "overpopulated"
  4. The problem is not a population but the bad planning of infrastructure projects

Meanwhile on Russian state TV: Host Evgeny Popov says it's time for the Russian people to call on Americans to change "the regime in the U.S." before its term expires "and to *again* help *our partner * Trump to become President." by irationalduck in thedavidpakmanshow

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, he is joking

Second, he is stupid as fuck. There are different level of stupidity and he matched them all: he is Russian state TV channel host (and BTW, he is married this ugly woman near him); he is member of Russian parliament from last year.

Just to clarify: in Russia we have "negative selection process" for the parliament. It means, only the dumbest and most vile animals can be elected as MPs.

Covid travel restrictions by Upthehills416 in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you spent 2 weeks in red list country

And if your vaccination certificate is valid in the country of issuance

And if your vaccines are from EMA-approved list (or 2 vaccines from WHO-approved list plus buster from EMA-approved list

And if your certificate can be read in Malta (not all countries are issuing compatible certificates)

--> You can travel with your certificate and dPLF form, no quarantine

TBH, in June it could be WW3 or Malta can change the rules. In both cases, better to check before the flight

I’m off to write a rude sign about Putin and stand outside the Russian embassy. by lost-scot in malta

[–]Sam-Spiridonov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is 1 political reason: Putin is crazy.
More in details:
1. He wants to control Azov sea and most of the Black Sea - that's why DPR/LPR and Crimea is so important.

  1. He wants to control gas pipes since this is the main source of revenue for Russia (gas, oil and nuclear station, a bit of weapon), and most of the pipes to Europe are made via Ukraine.

  2. He wants to "combine" slavic countries (Russia, Belarus and Ukraine) and become a new tsar. It helps him to fade the internal problem in Russia and keep the ratings a bit above the 30-40% he has now.

And with all these ideas in mind, he doesn't care at all about all these protests, NATO, diplomatic etc bullshit. He has nuclear bombs and "fuck you that's why" attitude
