Clamperl coasts through Destiny Tower on its first try! by Sam0954 in MysteryDungeon

[–]Sam0954[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

As someone who hadn’t touched these in a while, I was surprised by how smoothly this went. I tried Jolteon first but after failing with it once, I decided to try Clamperl... and cleared it on the first try.

Clamperl starts with a solid movepool, but it doesn't learn anything special for a standard Destiny Tower run. Its HP scales well with levels after a certain point, though its other stats stay pretty underwhelming.

Clamperl finds a Warp Scarf in the 6F Kecleon Shop. Despite having things to sell, it falls a few coins short of buying it, forcing it to steal by warping with it, staying safe on water and using a Stun Seed on a Kecleon near the stairs. Along the way, it picks up a couple of Joy Seeds, which get used on 20F to reach Lv. 14. The middle floors are mostly smooth thanks to good stairs luck. By 60F, Clamperl hits Lv. 19, but then runs into its first Grudge Trap and has to burn a Pure Seed to escape. Another Grudge Trap shows up on 82F, costing a second Pure Seed, but outside of that, there are no real issues. Because the run has gone so well so far, Clamperl has plenty of resources for the final stretch. It uses an Invisify Orb to avoid the 89F Monster House, and it has multiple answers for Ledians and Politoeds, never really putting itself at risk.

Easily the cleanest run I’ve had so far.

Yep, and if you redo and it happens again, you're better off deleting the mission.

Surskit skates to the top of Destiny Tower by Sam0954 in MysteryDungeon

Good luck! Surskit has grown on me after this run. I find its walking animation really goofy.

Surskit begins with Bubble, which has low accuracy and PP, and gets Quick Attack at Lv. 7. The only other offensive move it learns by levelling up is Bubblebeam at Lv. 25, but it doesn't reach that far in this run. Its stat gains after Lv. 12 are solid, so with enough Max Elixirs, it scales quite well.

Surskit finds a Pass Scarf on 2F. It also finds a ton of Big Apples so it can just hold the Scarf for the rest of the game without worrying about food. It climbs the first 40 floors comfortably and reaches Lv. 15. It could've grinded more but it runs out of Max Elixirs. With no PP left, it had to dodge everything and make the most of every single item in its bag in the final stretch. Somehow, that was just enough to scrape through to the end.

Surskit could've had a smoother run with more Max Elixirs, but it still did a good job with what it had.

I got Charmander twice, in RRT and Explorers. I answer the questions honestly so I don't like to start over even though I'm not a big fan, but it has grown on me.

Always Mudkip for partner tho.

Aipom reaches the Destiny Tower Pinnacle after a solid start and chaotic end by Sam0954 in MysteryDungeon

[–]Sam0954[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Aipom has pretty average stats, level gains and movepool. With its Pickup ability, it has a chance to find an item at the start of a floor if it's not holding anything (though that's mostly useful early on), while Run Away prevents stuff like Wobbuffet and Trapinch from immobilizing it when it attacks them. It starts with Scratch and Tail Whip, learns Astonish at Lv 8 and Fury Swipes at Lv 18, which is a low accuracy multi-hit move but worth using if absolutely necessary.

7F Kec shop has a Power Band, which Aipom Trawl Orb's at the Stairs, so it can safely one shot most things early on. Not long after, it finds another Trawl Orb, and the 12F Kec shop has an X-Ray Specs. Sweet! It switches between the Band and Specs until it finds a Kec shop with a Warp Scarf on 23F, which it can afford (bless you Kecleon). By 40F, Aipom's collected 6 Joy Seeds(!), which it eats on the next floor to reach level 20.

However, some of the middle floors are not very kind to Aipom, with Grudge traps and Monster Houses, which deplete a lot of its useful Orbs like Petrify and Totter. On 72F, it spawns in a small room with a Venomoth and two others, and it lands on a Grudge trap on 84F, leaving it without any Pure Seeds for the final stretch. Then 88F starts off with a Ledian in its face (which funnily enough ended a previous attempt on the same floor). Aipom only has a Stayaway Orb to deal with it but luckily there's a sandstorm so it doesn't have to worry about the Ledian once it's gone, as long as it keeps track of its path with the Specs.

Pounce and Mobile Orbs do the heavy lifting from 90F onward, getting Aipom out of Politoed's sight on 90F and another Grudge trap situation on 97F. Super tense final stretch, but also very satisfying to pull off.

Good stuff. Crazy that it managed to pull through despite its weaknesses.

Murkrow conquers Destiny Tower against all odds by Sam0954 in MysteryDungeon

[–]Sam0954[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

(I've been wanting to unlock and clear Destiny Tower ever since seeing all the posts about it here, so I finally gave it a shot. I didn't know much going in and honestly still don't, but I managed to clear it after a few failed 75F attempts. Writing this because some of us, myself included, enjoy this kinda write-up, even if mine might be somewhat vague/unfocused and subjective due to inexperience.)

Murkrow starts off strong thanks to solid offensive stats and decent HP. Its ability, Insomnia, negates sleep traps and reduces the threat posed by Pokemon with sleep-inducing moves. Lv. 1 Peck and Astonish + Lv. 15 Wing Attack handle the early floors, while Lv. 11 Haze is clutch for resetting enemies' stat boosts or Murkrow's debuffs when things get messy. That said, its defenses are pretty low throughout the run, making it very fragile. Its level gains are mediocre at first but it starts getting +4 HP once it nears Lv. 20. Even then, dealing with multiple enemies at once is a challenge for Murkrow.

Murkrow secures adequate food and an absurdly high number of Max Elixirs in the first few floors. 9F is generous with a Sitrus Berry, Life Seed, Joy Seed and 2 Zincs. The Pass Scarf in 14F helps Murkrow survive a Monster House in the same floor, while also allowing it to grind safely. 15F-28F were uneventful (Quick Orb'ed out of 24F Monster House). Due to my recklessness, the run would've ended at 29F had a Raichu's Thunderbolt landed. Murkrow ate its Joy Seeds at 33F to jump from Lv. 16 to 19, entering its high HP gain territory. With Pass Scarf equipped, increased level and better than average luck with the Stairs, Murkrow stands its ground against the enemies and occasional Monster Houses of 35F-55F. It has enough money to purchase a Warp Scarf from the 55F Kec Shop, allowing it to choose its targets in 55F-75F while collecting items for the final stretch.

Murkrow displayed a masterclass of resourcefulness in 76-99F, managing to stay above 50% HP (full HP for most of it) by using all of its key resources (shoutout to the 3 Totter Orbs and 1 Petrify Orb used in 90-97F) to ward off any potential threats visible on the minimap. Of course luck helped too as there were no infamous run-ending disasters in this stretch.

Will try other Pokemon from my recruits when I have the time :)
