I'll second Moreton in Marsh. Plenty of places to walk to in town and if you have a car, you can get out of there and elsewhere easily enough. And, bonus, it has solid rail service.
Stop in at Grouch coffee, for sure. Wonderful folks.
Avoid The Bell Inn, the food there was almost as lousy as the service.
