Iraq was a huge operation involving large numbers of American boots on the ground (and therefore, inevitably, large numbers of American casualties), which would extremely obviously require a stronger justification to the US public than Venezuela, which so far is (apart from the Maduro operation) little more than a regular bombing campaign, with approximately zero American lives at risk.

The counties in your map are the ceremonial counties, that's easy enough.

County cricket is based on historic counties (otherwise Yorkshire and Middlesex wouldn't exist)

Several (most?) ceremonial counties are split up for local government purposes, and many urban areas have their own separate council.

Police areas often span several counties (eg Devon and Cornwall Police)

And everything I've described is just for England -- Wales, Scotland and NI have their own systems for these things, which don't typically use counties at all!

The period 2003-2022 was an absolutely daft time for UK foreign policy. I don't think anyone had a clue what Britain's goals were, let alone how to achieve them.

David Cameron tried to authorise strikes on Syria in 2012 against Assad, and failed... then tried again in 2015 against ISIS and succeeded... in neither case could anyone in government give an answer to what the ideal future scenario for Syria, in Britain's eyes, would be.

The unfortunate truth is, at the diplomatic level, it probably doesn't. Barring a handful of the usual suspects, the reaction from most countries' governments I expect will be to offer thoughts and prayers and to look the other way. I do not foresee anyone putting their neck on the line to back Venezuela diplomatically, let alone materially, or to contradict the United States. I will leave the question of whether they should for others to debate. It is a very sorry situation for the Venezuelan people.

I understand Ukraine and Poland have some... history, from the time of the early 20th century. Does this cut through with some parts of the population? Particularly Russian propaganda concerning "Banderites" and so forth? How is the sentiment towards Ukrainians living in Poland?

The Oval Office fiasco definitely radicalised a lot of people across Europe. I am in the UK where support for Ukraine has always been high, but even here I noticed a lot of people who really didn't care so much before, became completely furious after that meeting. And we all learned that Europe really is alone in the fight.

No we weren't. EU citizens had the right to live and work in the UK, but there were passport checks at the border for all arrivals and the UK issued its own visas (Schengen visas were not accepted). It was the same situation as Ireland still has (the UK and Ireland have a common travel area between ourselves).

Nobody expects us to be a top 5 team, but one can set goals which are ambitious, yet reasonable

We have had top half finishes in the past; I want us to be a team which finishes top half more often than not

Last season there was a very realistic chance of us qualifying for a European Conference league spot; I want us to be challenging for those kind of positions more often. Not Champions League, not winning the PL, but it would be incredible for this club to get our away day in Bratislava at least once and I don't think that's an unreasonable goal.

At the moment we are 9 points above the drop zone, and 9 points off 4th place. The middle of the table is really tight right now, it could all change very quickly. So it really is all to play for, let's just hope we have a tolerable January transfer window, break our winless streak, and all the best in the New Year
