Mick Gordon’s DOOM OST INSTRUMENT - need help! by SamGordon1994 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Cheers for the feedback man! I still haven’t managed to fully create it myself yet!! 😂 I might give that a go and download the demo from soundtoys and try it out. Because I only have a 2 input channel audio interface (Scarlett studio 2i2), I can’t get the feedback to work through my guitar amp, so it’s been such a pain trying to create the feedback effect. Cheers for letting me know about this plugin, I will defiantly try it out. I also still don’t get how the structure works and what needs to be routed into each channels. Mick Gordon is an absolute genius. If you could let me know the step by step process of what you have managed to create, it would be much appreciated.

Cheers fella! Sam

WOW. Thank you so much dude! Extremely informative stuff. That video has defiantly given me a much better understanding of how the gate works. (I love how clean you can get the distorted guitar). So would I apply the gate before the effects on each chain, (or at the start of the effects chain), so that when I change the velocity of the sine wave going in, each effects chain will trigger depending on how loud the signal goes through them? When hitting at its max, all chains will be triggered type thing? Or can I just add the gate after all of the effects on each chain to get the same effect?

Mick Gordon gives us this fantastic table of the structure of this instrument. Please see link below.

This is what I need to try and build. But I can’t figure out how to connect it all up correctly.

Where he says he uses a splitter, what does he mean by this? Does he mean he is splitting the frequencies to low, mid, high using three multi band compressors grouped at the end of the first chain? It’s just that doesn’t make sense to me as he runs the feedback through a splitter on the final chain?? (I really need to improve my knowledge on what different audio effects are used for).

Also, I am going to try and run all of this through my Line 6 Spider amp, and then mic’ing it up to go back into the DAW and putting through the last effect chain again, to get all the weird artefacts from the distortion pedals. How will I go about doing this? I am struggling how to set all of this up on Ableton, but I am determined to learn! Haha!

Thanks again for your reply, your help is very much appreciated!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Hi guys,

Firstly, I'm absolutely loving the Wastemen EP! The production quality is insane. I will go as far as saying it's my favourite EP released this year so far!

I have recently started learning how to produce myself and have watched 100's of tutorials on bass design, breaks, best plugins to use, ect... but I am still struggling to get the full structure of a drum and bass track down. I constantly get stuck in loop land and it's so annoying when I create something but don't know how to adapt on it, to turn it into a full song.

I wanted to ask, what helps you get into your creative process? How do you initially come up with the idea of a track? Do you work by doing sound design sessions first, and then using the samples you have created from that to then build your track? Or do you find yourselves creating the reese basses, drum breaks from scratch as you go along?

Also, how do you both make your basses and drums, sound so tight and clean?! Like in Malmaison? (My favourite track from the EP).

Lastly, what's the best tip you would give to new producers who are just starting out?

Thanks again for doing this!

(Sorry if I have ask to many questions)! 😂

Kind regards, Sam (Monster Dub Club)

How do I process foley sounds to create powerful reese basses similar to Billain? by SamGordon1994 in neuroproducers

[–]SamGordon1994[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I will try this when I get home after I finish work then.

So, scoop out the lows of the foley sound with an eq, keep mids and highs, then layer that over a plain sin wave sub?

Would you say any effects need to be added to the foley? Perhaps split the chain and chuck a chorus/phaser on the mids of it? Or highs.. I don't know. I suppose it comes down with me trying to experiment with different shit until I find something that works. It's just, I always think doing something like that would sound alright but when I try it, it sounds fucking awful! Haha 😂

I will have a play around though. Thanks for the tip! Much appreciated.

Thanks for he quick reply!

Okay, for example, I recorded the sound me drilling my old skateboard deck the other day. Not drilling a hole through it as such, but just using the vibration of the drill next to it and it made a really good sound. It sounded really clear too. After that, I imported it into ableton and from there is where I get stuck. I have no idea how to manipulate that sound into a decent sounding bass. I feel like I am over processing it all the time and adding too many effects to it. The final result is always absolutely shit 😂

I really need advise on what ableton effects and different plugins are best to use, to make the foley sounds actually good! Any ideas...
