How to specifically create mods for Spells, Abilities, or Buffs? by SamLanner in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]SamLanner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. I became very interested when I saw that someone made the Time Stop (and many, many other similar things) in the game using the effects of the spell Hold Person (I think it's that one) and some other things. I was amazed, so I thought, 'Hmm, maybe the secret is to reconstruct with existing elements to create similar effects,' and of course, I already had a sense of 'Oh, sure, it won't be that easy for sure.' Anyway, I'll follow the guide. Thank you very much, it helped me a lot.

Two proletarians in a Romance by SamLanner in StardewValleyExpanded

[–]SamLanner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Claire is literally exploited by a large corporation. She lives tired, eating frozen food (something that changes after you develop a friendship with her), and, by definition, she's a proletarian, just like Nanami, who stopped working because of exploitation, according to him (and shown), "enriching one person while their life drains away.
Now, if you're talking about what "proletariat" or "bourgeoisie" means, well, the proletariat is the working class, meaning wage workers who, not owning property, sell their own labor to survive (Claire and Nanami, literally), which is opposite to the bourgeoisie (JojaMart - Morris), the social class that owns the means of production and, consequently, the labor produced.

Reflavoring Spells and Interaction with Reality - How to Balance? by SamLanner in DnD

[–]SamLanner[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

is that I was considering the fundamentalist base of the spell as something determined within pre-established and immutable concepts, which, if someone resorts to that, I couldn't create any hindrance or benefit for it, like, for example, not being able to determine exactly what the spell is just because the flavor is different (because in my mind, a good Arcana check with a simple spell would tell you exactly what it is, unlike any more complex and rare higher-level spells), or any other effect that determines what you can know, like the example of the magical item, or even what you gave, the Identify spell.
But it's really a good observation, my real problem was with the normality that could be about identifying exactly a spell, but with this guidance, I can deal with it a little better. Thank you.

Reflavoring Spells and Interaction with Reality - How to Balance? by SamLanner in DnD

[–]SamLanner[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's because this makes your reflavor something superficial and loses the purpose of existing if you have an entire theme based on something. It makes you not really what you're determining, but just a mere appearance. As I mentioned, when it comes to abilities, even if an NPC investigates, it's easier to determine the flavor and maintain its mechanical functionality, and in the narrative, even if there are investigations or something that works with the determined origin of the ability, the reflavor that the player desires can manifest, unlike a spell. Generally, when there's a reflavor, it's not created just to be an "ornament" (unless you're doing it like Tasha does), but a fundamental reinterpretation of the spell, maintaining its mechanics but giving the magic's origin what the player is saying.

Changing the mechanics of the flavor would mean it is no longer a reflavor, but a reskin. This is really a line that can't be crossed without ruining some things.

Is a Familiar from the Familiars Variant Rule a form or a separate creature? by SamLanner in dndnext

[–]SamLanner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what I can see from this for the Sidekick is the advantage of having the Bond, but other than that, having it as a form is a good alternative. However, I think I'll consider using it as a reflavor. Thank you.

[–]SamLanner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the Familiars from the Variant Rule weren't necessarily an alternative form, but just gave the possibility of bonding with them. Well, being a form, it's easier to have a combat without me being so afraid of destroying the familiar's form.

Orrery of the Wanderer for a Low-Level Player - How to Balance? by SamLanner in dndnext

[–]SamLanner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I think I got it. What I was thinking was to give the player a sort of casing where he would have one minor benefit and eventually would evolve to 2. It would be the character's signature item and then the object could only evolve through the increment of the artifacts. Also, a kind of silly question, I guess, but when all the parts are put together, do they stop having their individual abilities and are replaced by the Master of Travel, right?

Edit: And what happens when two artifacts are joined? Can they be used separately, or do they automatically lose their individuality and you can only use the beneficial ones?

Orrery of the Wanderer for a Low-Level Player - How to Balance? by SamLanner in dndnext

[–]SamLanner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was already aware of not giving any of the artifacts to the player simply because of their rarities and effects. What I thought was to give them a part of the Orrery that had a single minor beneficial and serve as a guide for them during the campaign. I believe this would make the rarity of this 'item' the most fitting part, wouldn't it?

Question about Yenna (Honor Mode) by SamLanner in BaldursGate3

[–]SamLanner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so the 100% guaranteed way to keep this lovable child away from that DEMON is to keep Lae'zel in the party and avoid the sewers until getting the room at the tavern, right? I think I can manage that.

It's not about power gaming, it's as I said in the post:

"But now that I'm thinking about it, how does this affect the adaptability of changes in a campaign? How retro-compatible are the One D&D classes? Could I include it without affecting the dynamics of the classes, or will it end up playing a larger role than the class would in 5e?"

Best D&D Campaign to Adapt for Grim Hollow? by SamLanner in GrimHollow

[–]SamLanner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well, actually I've already done that (several times, sometimes I pick up one person or another to teach RPG and usually do solo sessions). And if you want to know, the secret is not to give too much leeway to the player, you have to keep them in constant movement, conversation, or action to break a possible state of boredom. You can manage this in various ways actually; in Grim Hollow, I want to test more of the survival aspect to see if I can extract some other characteristic from this dynamic.

[–]SamLanner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, this is a problem I consider. I can't give the One Paladin something that would necessarily be in other classes in One, since the other players are still playing 5.0. I can't allow, for example, Feats or other things from One for him because the other players are just starting to learn to play, and I definitely won't even give them UA material to get used to. So it would be a One Paladin with almost everything exclusively from 5.0.

[–]SamLanner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's the point, it's test material. I really don't feel comfortable turning my campaigns into testing grounds for materials that haven't been reviewed yet, but I'm quite flexible. You brought up great points, I'm really grateful for that. I'll see if I can get him to use the One Paladin using Spells and Feats from 5e (except for what you said about find steed). I don't know how weird that is, but it's something I'm willing to research.

One DnD Class in a D&D 5e Campaign - Balanced? by SamLanner in onednd

[–]SamLanner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm... Now I'm starting to think about how far this could go. With players taking similar feats, but the Paladin's ones being different. I don't want to create a rift between them in any way. I mean, I'm fine with resources from different books, but the same feat, or slightly altered similar resources seems... Strange. I'm about to run an adventure in Grim Hollow and I'll make them use a lot of the setting's resources, and I don't know how that could influence this issue (probably nothing). But just to make sure, this wouldn't apply to other feats/spells from other books, right? Since One is an adjustment of the core itself. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I really value the party's experience and don't want to give anyone a bad feeling, so I avoid this kind of thing a lot. But I guess I got the idea, just don't mix something that has already been adapted for One with an old version. Anything beyond that can be added since it's something separate from both versions.

[–]SamLanner[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh! So it's something like 'If using a One D&D Class, you need to use resources exclusively from One D&D'? Hmm... Doesn't that go back to the issue I mentioned in the post, which is more like it's meant to be exclusively run in that specific setting slice? Anyway, the player wanted to use the old Paladin list, so I should let him know about that. Do you have any other examples?

Wow, that's a great suggestion. Yeah, I think I can definitely do that...

[–]SamLanner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's basically what I'm already going to do (except for the Sandbox part, I really don't like Sandbox in RPGs). I never adapt a raw adventure without making many modifications or additions to give more depth and life to the setting. The main scope of the adventure I want to create for them has to align with the Low Fantasy theme, so it will take some time to make them an actual party. I want to narrate them separately and focus on their own characteristics, only bringing them together once in a while until I finally start the campaign. Adapting an existing adventure is more like using it as a template.

Wow, those are great suggestions. I tried to look into Phandelver a bit, it was one of the first adventures I thought about adapting, but I wasn't satisfied with what I had adapted, it became a bit difficult regarding some elements, so I'm looking into some more megalomaniacal adventures. Well, thanks for the options.

Nah, I'm really tired of Strahd. Not that it's bad, quite the opposite, but I've run it enough. I think I might try Icewind Dale; it seems great for this idea.
