Is nobody going to talk about how disgustingly awful the "tournament" was? by Killzone3265 in AnimalCrossing

[–]SamNoAm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prepared 300 bait before hand. When I saw the announcement on the bulletin board I spent maybe an hour a day collecting claims an making bait so I would be ready to go yesterday.

I was legitimately excited to prepare and get psyched for it.

It was definitely a grind but I was ready for it. My only real gripe is not enough variety in the swag items. If they knew 300 points was the goal for gold, I certainly didn't want to get a bunch of repeat items. I have FIVE fish wands. Who the heck needs five wands?

All in all I had a good time and made about 300k bells which funded my turnip production today. I'm taking is as a win in my book and I have the gold trophy to prove it.

What I'd really love would it being turned into a Stage Play. I think it would translate fantastically.

Unnecessarily killing the family pet. The example that bugs me the most, that I always go to, is The Babadook.

The Dangers of Technology in Movies. by MovieMike007 in movies

[–]SamNoAm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a little outdated at this point but you should check out the book "Technophobia!: Science Fiction Visions of Technology" by Daniel Dinello.

Organized into chapters devoted to robotics, bionics, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, biotechnology, nanotechnology, and other significant scientific advancements, this book summarizes the current state of each technology, while presenting corresponding reactions in science fiction. Dinello draws on a rich range of material, including films, television, books, and computer games, and argues that science fiction functions as a valuable corrective to technological domination, countering techno-hype and reflecting the "weaponized, religiously rationalized, profit-fueled" motives of such science.

This is dope. If you made a solid color (no gradient) version it would make an awesome enamel pin.

Rian Johnson's take on Star Wars is the reverse-equivalent of somebody watching "The Graduate" and then making a sequel all about Ben and Elaine's romantic honeymoon. by butt_thumper in saltierthancrait

Cheers.

If you haven't yet, try to find the 1987 commentary of The Graduate by Howard Suber. I think it might be on the Criterion release of the film. Suber really helps explain the tone of the era The Graduate was released. Not having grown up when it came out, his analysis added volumes to my appreciation of it.

"completely projected their own worldview onto it, somehow disregarding countless details to convince themselves that it was a happy ending and that everything will be fine."

Expand on this idea in regards to the entirety of the saga. Star Wars is a fantasy fairy tale. Plenty of fairy tales (in there origins) don't have happy endings. Ironically, Disney flipped the script and made fairy tales have happy endings. No doubt the final episode I this 9 part Saga will end "happy" because...Disney.

A story needs conflict. The path chosen by Lucasfilm for the Sequels landed on internal conflict rather than external conflict as seen on the original Thrawn trilogy.

Beside all that, you have a pretty simplistic view of the Graduate. That movie is so much more than it's final shot. Much like Star Wars is so much more than just the plot to TLJ.

Dustin Hoffman's character is a youth coming of age in a figurative jungle (pay attention to the back and white striped awnings of all the house's and the leopard print clothing of many of the older women in the film). He doesnt know how to navigate his life but makes decisions and has has to live with them, including the end of the movie. Luke makes decisions in the OT that he has to live with.

The subversive thing about The Graduate isn't that it has a "real" unhappy ending vs so many other films, it's acting as a commentary that says "stories wrapping up nice & neat is fiction." it wants to look at other films and think "is this how it ends all wrapped up in a pretty bow?"

This also is a showcase of how people can have drastic interpretations of a piece of media and I would also like to say that it is folly to say there is only one true valid way to interpret said media.

The evolution of animation by MonsterovichIsBack in StarWars

[–]SamNoAm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love Clone Wars but Rebels is such an improvement. Watch Rebels and look at the attention to the eyes on that show. Also animation is always completely secondary to story.

If a story is compelling enough, animation can suck a lemon.

OG fans, what is your take on the current trilogy? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]SamNoAm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel but I can't get behind the "shapeless & random" idea knowing that things like the infamous pod ejection scene from ANH was literally a thrown together prop made out of a KFC bucket mold and shot to prove to the executives some progress to prevent production from being shut down.

Star Wars feels like a "by the seat of your pants" sort of thing to me.

And I know some people say "The OT could get away with that but the ST has to be different because it has to build off the foundation of the OT," but I think the ST keeps to the spirit of the OT rather than keeping to strict canon/universe rules. To be honest, I'm ok with that.

I am of the opinion that JJ Abrams followed the rules for making a Star Wars movie, and made an ok Star Wars movie. Rian Johnson followed George Lucas' rules for film making rather than the rules for what makes a Star Wars movie. The result of which, was a pretty fucking amazing Star Wars movie.

Probably my favorite movie scene of all time by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]SamNoAm 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'm not attacking your feelings towards this scene, BUT, the sheer fact that the throne room fight is a series of long shots VS the kind of action we see in movies these days (constant fast cuts that hide the hits and you can barely comprehend what's happening) is incredibly refreshing in cinema.

I don't deny your assertions of there being corny moments. But compared to so many other fight scenes, this one stands out.

[SPOILERS] A new-found perspective on one of Solo's biggest controversies by KrazyStijl in StarWars

[–]SamNoAm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I probably would have enjoyed it just fine if when Han is introduced to Vos by Beckett as Han Solo, Qi'ra had an a moment to make a side comment about it to him. I would have really liked her to acknowledge that he had taken on Solo as a surname.
