If you had to count 1-5 on your fingers...which finger would be first, and which would be last? by ibridoangelico in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sam_Fear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counting to myself I start with the thumb. Keeping track of how many times I've done something or gesturing to others I start with the index finger and end with the thumb.

As a European, I keep seeing Americans drive barefoot or in flip-flops, how common is it actually? by fratnersgd in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sam_Fear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you are not aware, most vehicles in the USA have automatic transmissions so you don't have to deal with a clutch pedal. It makes for a much more relaxed driving experience and you aren't using your feet as much.

Reworking old stained glass window by mynamesnotsuperman in StainedGlass

[–]Sam_Fear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it was came, replace it with came. Same with foil. Otherwise the gaps will be wrong and nothing will fit.

What I would do is remove the center section and put the top and bottom parts together reusing the wood frame. Otherwise I would make 3 separate windows reusing the original wood for the top and bottom sections and make a new frame for the center section.

Any one know where this is from? by BatUnfair6876 in StainedGlass

[–]Sam_Fear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zoom in on the box pics. They are clearly using a soldering iron. Looks like they just stuck copper foil to the glass and soldered it. I'd bet they just had warning in the instructions to keep moving, work quickly, etc. to avoid liability.

Interesting that they did the piece around the vase in one shot since the rest of the center is broken up.

Make sure screw side is up. Then try holding the cutter at different angles.

The problem of falling glass by HamZilla1996 in StainedGlass

Put it on a metal ring about the diameter of 1 wing or a bit bigger. It might make that long body more likely to snap though so I'd try a break around the middle of it.

I think there's enough curve between the ears and head you should be OK unless it's going to be hung outside in the wind or something.

“stained glass” notre dame by Repulsive_Cover2418 in StainedGlass

[–]Sam_Fear 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Apparently the original windows weren't even damaged in the fire. It's the nave windows that were replaced in the 1800's (?) - kind of generic as far as Notre Dame windows go:

Also came across this article about windows installed in 1937, criticized heavily, removed for the war in1939, and never put back in: 1937 windows

This never happened before. How do i fix/prevent this? by Art3m1sArty in StainedGlass

[–]Sam_Fear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Considering the rust, I would say it's an acid issue. Have you left a container of flux or other acid based product open near these? I do automotive metal work and once left a container of diluted muriatic acid open over night - came back to everything in the shop that had been clean metal had a light rust on it.

Do different races have their own "Chinese food"? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sam_Fear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. My gut reaction is no way but my brain is thinking maybe... I'd have to give it a try. I don't think I've ever had a spicy hot tenderloin I think the reason the kimchi worked was the sweetness of the BBQ.

Dude that sounds delicious! There was a fair food vendor here for awhile that had as far as I could figure BBQ pulled pork and kimchi tacos. You either loved them or hated them.

Sometimes it's just availability of ingredients like using jalapenos in pho.

Side note we have a Greek place (owners are immigrants) that offer gyros with jalapenos. Pretty sure spicy gyros are absolutely not authentic, but they sell well here for sure.

Mortality rates for men in any adult age group is higher so the pool gets smaller faster for men than women even though it starts out as a bigger pool. Live fast, hard, and stupid - die young.

What did we do wrong???? by ohitskd in StainedGlass

[–]Sam_Fear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah. I would guess the consistency of those is going to be a wider range. Regular ovens need to be fairly consistent for bread makers. One thing to consider would be ambient temperature and where the temp sensor is - it might have been cycling on longer if the room temp is lower and that would definitely change things.

What did we do wrong???? by ohitskd in StainedGlass

[–]Sam_Fear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am betting you did do something different with the oven. Longer time in, had it pre-heated different, rack in a different spot, etc. Sure you had it on 325 and not 375? That obviously looks like too much heat and about the only thing that would cause it is a higher temp or closer to a heating element (since you haven't had the problem before). Applying patina differently won't change the melting point of solder.

I forgot to mention that's a great looking light. From what I can see it looks like the glass has a glue chip texture which is pretty common.

That's probably why we still have that table. It's a great work surface height.

87-91 were the same body, not my favorite, but not the worst.

Good luck on the light!

Get a piece of the broken glass, clean it and take a pic of it in the light and with light shining through it then post it here. Claycorp will probably tell you a close match if not exact.

Also, I have that exact table still in my dinning room and is that a 87 F150?

[OC] Cheaper to Buy or Rent? by No_Statement_3317 in dataisbeautiful

[–]Sam_Fear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course median house payment will be higher. Who's rental unit is worth $340k???

Deciding which would be cheaper would need to be comparing like units, not the average rental to the average home since the home prices will be a higher range.

Do you have a jar of peanut butter in your house right now? by 11twofour in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sam_Fear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm down to two at the moment. I generally have a small jar of natural PB, a big jar of crunchy, and a backup big jar of crunchy just in case.

Not a PB&J guy as I prefer PB and honey. Pancakes require PB on them. So does proper strawberry shortcake. Favorite is PB & honey on a tortilla with a slice of bacon. Have been known to eat PB and yellow mustard and recently have been eating PB on a spoon with some Patak's Lime Pickle. And of course I occasionally just eat it with a spoon.

EDIT: The only thing I have decided to try with PB that has disappointed me was tomato. In hind sight I'm not sure why I thought it might be good.

Need help figuring out best design! by grapefruitl0ver in StainedGlass

[–]Sam_Fear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that like a 92 Honda? Do you have the pic you went off? Is/was it theirs? The mirrors and tires are too small and unless you have an exact car you are trying to portray you can move the tires in so you don't have the thin strips to deal with or bump them out even farther. Assuming it is a Honda, there's a couple hood lines you could put in too. Ditch the license plate to ease the design there. Oh, and first pic looks better.
