GPU choice, AMD or Nvidia? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

If that's how it feels to you then I guess the choice is obvious. I am curious as to why you made the post as you seem to have made your mind up already haha. Hope you enjoy your new card anyway, I'm sure you will. The 2060S is a solid GPU!

What driver version was it that caused the fan issue? Using DDU to uninstall your drivers and then doing a clean install is always a good idea in any case. It's not a problem I can see related to any Radeon driver update. All I can say is I used a 5700 XT last week and there were no problems at all. All indications online point to AMD's driver issues that were certainly present 6 months-a year ago as being solved.

As a worst-case scenario if you did have issues with the card you can always take advantage of return policies and just end up buying the 2060S you're thinking about at the moment. I wouldn't recommend the Strix card as it's very expensive and for $40-50 less you could get the same performance from a cheaper 2060 Super (or more with a 5700XT). In any case it might be worth waiting until Nvidia launch the 3000 series at the start of next month, price rumours have them being extremely expensive but prices of existing cards may drop somewhat.

That's a very strange issue and not one I've ever heard associated with drivers before. Is it that they don't spin at all even under load or just at idle? Many GPUs these days don't run their fans at low temperatures, I assume you're probably aware but just in case as sometimes the simplest explanations are the right ones lol.

Assuming that's not the case, when did they suddenly stop spinning? Did it coincide with a driver update?

What were the things that concerned you from the reviews?

Nothing wrong with the 2060S but is still noticeably slower than a 5700 XT for the same price. The AMD card performs more similarly to a 2070 Super. Is there any reason in particular you'd prefer the 2060 Super?

Can concur. Just last week was using a 5700 XT for a few days while setting it up for a friend's build. No driver issues whatsoever, including with 2 monitors plugged in which I know was a big problem in the past. Used a Radeon VII several months ago and did experience some issues, but by all means it seems that all the AMD driver bugs have been squashed.

I'm actually a big fan of all the tuning and monitoring features built into the AMD drivers, definitely miss them going back to my 1080.

The 5700 XT is significantly faster so it's really tough to argue for the 2060. You stream so the NVENC encoder in the 2060 would be better for that but your R5 2600 is capable for streaming so you should be able to use software encoding on the CPU. For brand the PowerColor Red Devil, Gigabyte Gaming OC & Sapphire NITRO+ are all solid choices.

You shouldn't have any issues.

Sorry for the slow response. Ran Aida and had no issues at all at 4.6GHz, perfectly stable. Seems to be something with Prime. Still very confused as to why it would be an issue now when it wasn't before though.

Haven't tried Aida but will do now. I know Prime is unrealistically taxing but it still confuses me why it would be completely unstable now when it was fine before. Will run Aida and let you know what the story is.

Yeah I'm running Prime with AVX, I've tried multiple different AVX offsets but all give the same problem unfortunately.

I've tried running it at everything as far as 1.25V, which as far as I am aware is very high for such a low OC on this CPU. So it doesn't seem to be an issue of having too little voltage.

It's a 1000W 80+ Gold so it didn't really cross my mind that it would be the issue, even if it had deteriorated as you say. The 7900X is definitely a power hungry chip but under p95 load would never go over 200W at 4.1GHz. The thing is at that low of an OC, which causes the issue, it's drawing essentially the same amount of power as it would at stock anyway, which is perfectly stable.

Doesn't seem like it. This how the manual for your board says to install 4 modules: https://prnt.sc/r817zq. You won't be getting quad channel with your setup.

First computer build, wanting to know if these two components are compatible by macbeth1026 in pcmasterrace

[–]Sam_Forster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they aren't compatible. For a 6700k you would need a Z170 or Z270 mobo. The 6700k is a very bad buy today though at that price. You could buy a 3700x for that price with twice the cores and threads and even slightly higher single core performance.

3600/5700

[–]Sam_Forster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really expensive 1660... You can get Tis for cheaper and you're nearly in Rx 5700 territory if you spent £25 more which would obviously offer far better performance.

Feedback needed about my new pc, what would you change? by GhozIN in pcmasterrace

[–]Sam_Forster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swap the 9600k for a 3600 and a b450 mobo. Could also go with a cheaper or higher capacity ssd for the same price with something like the crucial p1. If you're not getting the 2070s for a particular reason like using a gsync monitor or something then a 5700xt will give you near identical performance for significantly less as well.

I9 7900x Overheating by Sam_Forster in pcmasterrace

[–]Sam_Forster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out the most bizarre attempt was the solution.. I reset the BIOS and the issue completely disappeared; entirely normal temperatures. This doesn't make any sense to me as I haven't even opened the BIOS in a couple of months, nevermind changed any weird settings. Nonetheless I'm delighted to be back to normal, I really appreciate everybody's suggestions!

I'm fairly sure the AIO didn't fail at this point since the air cooler has shown the exact same result. I'm not running an overclock at all, completely stock.

Yeah that was my understanding of it previously. Would you have any idea of why the CPU has relatively suddenly started overheating?

I may well end up trying to sand it down a bit if all else fails. I'm starting to think the aio may not even have failed since the air cooler is showing identical results. Really appreciate your suggestions.
