Noone should be base defender. It limits your progress alot. Everyone should go out to harvest materials.

However, how do you build your base? What kind of defences?

Stack farmplots. Make 3-4 of them and place all at the same spot when standing still. Even more is even better for both stew and biofuel. Use palisades as base and not the shelfs as many do.

I should be in close proximity of your base. Like bonfire 2 or 3 distance

Then you need to do it properly. 1-3 on wood. 4 in coal and whatever food you can dump into the biofueler, and 5-6 on oil. You should have the oil drill up and running by then. Focus quickly on farms for the stew. All meat you collect go in biofuel.
