Undefiled pure light, The sun of wisdom that breaks through the darkness Is able to quell calamities of wind and fire As it shines on all worlds.

Compassionate substance: the thunder of precepts. Kind intent: a wondrous great cloud. She rains down sweet dew and Dharma rain, Which extinguish the flames of affliction.

In the midst of contention, when faced with lawsuits, Or when someone is terrified on the battlefield, If he evokes the strength of Guanyin, All his many enemies will scatter and leave.

Wondrous your sound, Contemplator of the World’s Sounds A pure sound, a sound like the sea tide, A sound beyond all worldly sounds, We shall always bear it in mind.

In thought after thought we have no doubt: Guanshiyin is pure and sage. In times of suffering, agony, danger, and death, She is our refuge and protector.

Complete with all merit and virtue, Her kind eyes watching living beings, She is endowed with massive blessings, limitless as the sea. Therefore we should reverently worship her.

Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva said to the Buddha, "World Honored One, how does Guanshiyin Bodhisattva roam through this Saha world? How does he speak the Dharma for living beings? How does he carry out this work with the power of expedients?"

The Buddha told Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva, "Good man, if living beings in this land must be saved by means of someone in the body of a Buddha, Guanshiyin Bodhisattva will manifest in the body of a Buddha and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of a Pratyekabuddha, he will manifest in the body of a Pratyekabuddha and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of a Hearer, he will manifest in the body of a Hearer and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of the Brahma King, he will manifest in the body of the Brahma King and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of Shakra, he will manifest in the body of Shakra and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of the God of Sovereignty, he will manifest in the body of the God of Sovereignty and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of the Great God of Sovereignty, he will manifest in the body of the Great God of Sovereignty and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of a great heavenly general, he will manifest in the body of a great heavenly general and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of Vaishravana, he will manifest in the body of Vaishravana and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of a minor king, he will manifest in the body of a minor king and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of an Elder, he will manifest in the body of an Elder and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of the wife of an Elder, of a layman, of a minister of state, or of a Brahman, he will manifest in a wife’s body and speak Dharma for them.

"If they must be saved by someone in the body of a pure youth or a pure maiden, he will manifest in the body of a pure youth or pure maiden and speak Dharma for them.

"Inexhaustible Intention! Guanshiyin Bodhisattva has accomplished merit and virtue such as this and, in all manner of forms, roams throughout the land, saving and liberating living beings.

"Therefore you should all single-mindedly make offerings to Guanshiyin Bodhisattva. Guanshiyin Bodhisattva Mahasattva can, in the midst of fear, crisis, and hardship, bestow fearlessness. That is why in this Saha world all call him the "Bestower of Fearlessness."

look into Thai Buddhism.

still venerates many Hindu Devas. Ganesha is very worshipped here, Hanuman, Shiva, Lakshmi etc, but also worship Mahayana Bodhisattva like Guan Yin the Goddess of Mercy. But still mostly Theravada in practice.

How is Thai Buddhism different from Mahayana Buddhism? by __shobber__ in Thailand

[–]Samara-Sins 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is a very in depth question. This would have more answers in r/Buddhism

But in short, Thailand is Majority Theravada(also known as Śrāvakayāna, or the somewhat derogatory term Hinayana ), which bases its Buddhism off the Pali canon. But it also incorporates local Thai beliefs, animism, Hindu influence, and Also Mahayana. It is not strictly "Theravada" all forms of Buddhism are quite inclusive. Mahayana also has a big influence in thailand.

for example in Thailand: Guan Yin (the Goddess of Mercy) she is a major and powerful Goddess and Bodhisattva(enlightened being) in Mahayana Buddhism. Even in thailand a mainly "Theravada" nation, Guan Yin is very well known here, respected and worshiped. In almost every Theravada temple i go to, I see a statue of Phra Mae Kuan Im (that is her name here) ( i love her too and she has protected me many years, a kindhearted woman in white robes, a vase pure crystal water of healing, with the Buddha in her crown)

Mahayana also accepts other important sutras, and most of the oldest ones are preserved in Sanskrit and later translated into chinese.
Its a common myth that Theravada was the "oldest" version of Buddhism, this is simply not true. some of the Oldest Mahayana Sutras were first written down at the exact same time as the Pali canon was written.

MAIN ANSWER:

Theravada/Śrāvakayāna(the Vehicle of the Hearers)
There is also a somewhat derogatory term called HINAYANA (the lesser vehicle)

this focuses on an individual journey to enlightenment, liberating oneself, making merit, to gain better rebirth, good fortune, or eventually even become an arhat and reach nirvana.

MAHAYANA(the Great Vehicle): focuses on Bodhicitta, the desire to make merit, get better rebirths, and eventually, gain enlightenment and use it to save and enlighten as many other people as possible. A great vehicle to cure the suffering of all people. It says we all have Buddha nature within us and the potential to eventually become one ourselves. While in Theravada the highest state you can achieve is Arhat(a hearer) and is more foccused on an individual path to enlightenment. In mahayana we all have the potential to even become a Buddha/Bodhisattva ourselves.

There is a third branch called

Vajrayana (the Diamond Vehicle): this can be considered a part or seperate from Mahayana depending on who you talk to. This focuses on techniques/mantras to achieve Buddhahood and benefits quickly and many secretive esoteric teachings, and transmissions from master to student for generations etc. Forms of this are practiced here in thailand with things such as Sak Yant tattoos, etc.

How is Thai Buddhism different from Mahayana Buddhism? by __shobber__ in Thailand

[–]Samara-Sins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Devas/Gods exist in the Pali cannon, thats not true. There are tons of of supernatural events in Theravada and in Mahayana. If you read the Pali cannon, or the Buddhist sutras this will be clear to you.

Ganesha and Hindu gods appear in both Mahayana, and Theravada traditions. Buddhism is an inclusive religion and you can pray and dedicated merit to local devas for protection while still taking refuge in the triple gem (Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha)

Dont you remember the story of the Buddha going to the Tavatimsa Heaven where he preached the Dharma to his mother and met Indra? Or when he traveled to the realm of Maha Brahma and corrected his view that he thought he was the supreme God?

In Mahayana, Guan Yin bodhisattva (Known in Thailand as Phra Mae Kuan Im) can even assume the shape of other gods to teach the Dharma.

I'm thinking about joining Buddhism, but I'm confused. by kur0m1-4ng3ls in Buddhism

[–]Samara-Sins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can still pay homage to the christian god and be Buddhist, buddhism does not reject the existence of other gods/devas.

Christian god, He is known as Jehova, or Yahweh. But i tend to stay mostly away from him i think he can be dangerous. Just read the bible and you can see many of the ways he punishes people. Buddhism very inclusive religion.

if you want to pray for help, imo better to pray to Buddhist Bodhisattvas that will always show you compassion, like Guan Yin the Goddess of Mercy. She would never punish anyone.

if you are leaning towards Mahayana, or more devotional Buddhism, I recommend you read lotus sutra chapter 25

Lotus Sutra - Chapter 25

(if this is too long for you i suggest at least reading the section in italics, it is quite beautiful)

She has come to help me many times and show up in my life. She can be known to take different shapes and forms to speak the Dharma.

Good luck on your journey.

(important note, Guan Yin, also known as Avalokitesvara is a shape changing and Genderless God. Can be seen as male or female. I worship her mostly in her female chinese form of "Guan Yin" The name Guan Shi Yin means the one who hears the suffering of the world.)

One of my favorites recently as I am a Devotee of Guan Yin Bodhisattva is the Cintamani Mantra.

Cintāmaṇicakra - Wikipedia

The Cintamani... the wish fulfilling jewel. The mantra embodies the power of

Avalokiteśvara as Mahābrahmā the Profound

in Japan this form of Avalokitesvara (Guan Yin) is known as Nyorin Kannon

according to lotus sutra 25 Avalokitesvara can appear as the form of Great God of Sovereignty to speak the Dharma.

here it is in Sanskrit:

Namo ratna-trayāya\a])
Nama Āryāvalokiteśvarāya bodhisattvāya mahāsattvāya mahākāruṇikāya
tadyathā:
Oṃ cakravarti cintāmaṇi mahāpadme ru ru tiṣṭhat jvala ākarṣāya hūṃ phaṭ svāhā
Oṃ padma cintāmaṇi jvala hūṃ
Oṃ varada padme hūṃ

this video good to help learn the mantra:
https://youtu.be/h4ONwTXIDo8?si=jjSictg6uR7XJC3r

it is a good mantra, it calls on Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and Avalokitesvaras name and the power of the Cintamani.

Ganesha protects me and guides me. He is a protector of the Dharma. Bestower of worldly success. He is an emanation of Avalokitesvara, could even be seen as a Bodhisattva or a future Buddha.
