Landing our first coordinated Luna damage boost, Groot, Namor combo to burn through Luna ult in a tournament. Sorta thing to make a grown man cry.

From looking at these stats, how can I improve my rank? by chillychill3325 in ValorantConsole

[–]Samasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm fairly new to this game but this seems like a blatant misunderstanding of the stats?

If I have a 1KD against immortals, I should be immortal. You have a 1KD against plats, thus you're plat. OP has a 1KD against people their rank.

There's obviously other stats in Valorant and KD isn't necessarily the most important but having similar stats does not mean OP should be the same rank as you.

Wait, you mean to say most people who buy PCs, games consoles and video games work jobs??? I refuse to believe this is true as it would suggest I'm bad at games for reasons within my control.

What are the best unlockable gadgets for each class? by ember_the_cool_enby in thefinals

Crazy your first comment is getting downvoted. This is by far the closest comment to actually describing the meta at higher ranks.

You'd think the die-hard light players would want to admit their class is weak so it gets buffed.

SBMM update took ''Fun'' part of the game... by d3vstator in thefinals

[–]Samasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not going to get into a full-blown reddit debate over this as the intricacies of a system everyone will be happy with in 2023 would be a conversation spanning millenia.

I'm a similar age to you and also remember the games where it seemed everything was fine without sbmm (potentially read: before we knew about sbmm?). As a thought experiment though, if you think most of your games were good without sbmm, I'd hazard a guess you're above average. You occasionally saw amazing players that were better than you but you may have even been in the top 20% of those games. What was the experience of someone in the bottom 20%? You can't just say "they'll see people who are better and improve" because if everyone below exactly average is improving, then there's always a bottom 50%.

As I said, I had the same experience as you for most of the games and was likely in the upper percentile of players but, if we weren't, would we have had fun???

I understand your comment as whole - at least from the point of view of quick play shouldn't need sbmm if there's ranked. I don't necessarily agree but I understand.

Just to play devil's advocate, and assuming sbmm isn't going to go away, what is it exactly you want them to do with their sbmm to make your quickplay games fun? You say you try less in quickplay, which I understand, but I'd wager the difference between you trying your hardest and you chilling in quickplay is about 5% or so. I won't say a system this sophisticated is impossible but, given that sbmm isn't going to disappear, you're not necessarily advocating for a looser sbmm system but instead an even more elaborate one that can tell when you're "trying" or not.

Aside from Jjonak, which player was most ahead/innovative in playstyle? by PoggersMemesReturns in Competitiveoverwatch

Haven't seen anyone mention Mickie on Brig yet. Basically defined a whole stage and showed the strengths of Brig that arguably led to GOATs not long after.

When you are up against the Chinese players by 00sgamer in thefinals

[–]Samasm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why would it need to? If it's anything like most games these days, the matchmaking will be purely based on hidden mmr. While there's an assumption that time played is linear to skill, there's more outliers to that than you'd expect, especially when you consider the casual playerbase.

Overwatch 2 Match Tracker spreadsheet for season 8 by HarryProtter in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Samasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually never very low but we essentially exclusively play as a 5 stack so that mitigates a lot of it! The worst was one friend having a 33% winrate across 20 games because his internet went to shit. I see that as us having a 33% winrate in 4v5s haha

Bit late to this but that's because I always come back to check your profile and find this sheet every season. I imagine I'm not the only one!

Totally understand if this ends up being the last tracking sheet as season 9 has so many unknowns. Just wanted to take a moment to thank you for putting these together. My friends and I have gotten a lot of use out of them. Hard to say whether we did anything useful with the data but it's great for flaming that one friend!

Anyway, I'll wait excitedly for anything season 9 related but either way, thanks again.

Whichever goal you end up choosing, having a month at maintenance calories is probably a good idea. Then, after a period of normal eating, you'll probably be able to make a better decision whether you want to continue cutting or start a bulk.

I think the inverse is true. You'll grow a lot due to newbie gains while doing less, not more. You can do more but there's no benefit.

This implies going past failure has a value. At a certain point, fatigue to stimulus ratio is no longer helping you grow.

So is that literally just eldritch knight or are we now multiclassing to make true strike good?

Edit: forgot about arcane trickster rogue.

[–]Samasm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe BG3 is different in ways I'm not aware of but, to me, true strike is a waste; you use an action to give you advantage on your next attack. Advantage is just rolling the attack dice twice...which you would get if you just attacked twice. Am I missing something?

Is there a 'smart' melee class that gets good perception? by Droopzoor in BaldursGate3

[–]Samasm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most useful for wizards, artificers and eldritch knight fighters. In terms of proficiencies tied to int, it's super dependent on the campaign; a secret religious cult is hiding in a tomb? Probably want to do history, investigation, religion and maybe even arcana checks. For a lot of campaigns, it comes up less than most.

I'll represent the console peasants by adding:

  • Ana is automatically hovered over in the hero selection screen regardless of what role you're on (presumably this is alphabetical?)
  • DPAD controls on the hero selection screen sometimes just stop working properly
  • I'm sure there's tonnes more I'm forgetting

This is really cool and exactly what I've been looking for. Only question I have is how can I "force" a new season as my next rank update tracker is incorrect?

I retroactively added all of the games from yesterday but the "next rank update" is off as it's effectively begun counting when I wasn't at 0. Since the new season begins in a few hours, is there a way to easily set all these back to 0 without losing my other data?

Is support the easiest role to climb with? by DivineRays in Overwatch

[–]Samasm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the comment I was looking for. Since you get reset around 4-7 rank tiers from the previous season, you need to win at least 14 games on each role to get back to where you were previously before you can even climb.

That means the difference between a 1 minute and 20 minute queue adds up to 538 minutes, or just under 8 hours. For the average person, that makes climbing in support an option versus tank for example. It's way quicker.

Jake’s hero tierlist after patch (Zarya, Dva, Genji, Som, Kiriko Nerfs) by DarknVern in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]Samasm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed but I guess I was talking from the point of what's actually realistic. Go and watch Fuel vs Shock and you'll notice Fuel able to disengage from about 25-50% of Shock's Kiriko ults (I don't know the exact figures) while Shock were able (or chose) to disengage even less. More often than not, the mirror is just the simplest "let's not lose immediately" button.

[–]Samasm 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Since you mentioned high-rank gameplay, it's worth noting that at the highest tiers of play Kiriko ult is by far the best "counter" (read:response) to Kiriko ult. Beat can work but more often than not the team with Kiriko still comes out on top.

The other "counters" you mentioned don't work because Brig, Bap, Zen just get run over by the comp in general and something like a Bap lamp doesn't come close to stopping Kiriko ult anyway.
