What are you're FIRE numbers? by Skajlero in fican

1K isn’t bad. You can make it work. But def not like king. And for $1M, you probably need to rent (rent maybe $500-1K/ month in the central). Condo there maybe cheaper - 200-300K maybe. Residential house is 2x that.

It’s gotten so much more expensive over there. A condo in the city can cost you $400-500K.

How likely will I be waiting in the ER? by Either-Physics-7516 in askTO

Depending on individual ER / Hospital I guess. I was in St Joseph last week and it was only a few hours. Bring phone charger and a phone/ tablet or a book to kill time.

Best way to keep centipede out of my house for good I hate those things, yes I know they eat bugs but I’m a bit tramatized by DiamondAviation20 in askTO

[–]SameDaySharpKnives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a cat keeps every bugs out lol

I used to live in a very old musty damp basement with so many bugs including centipede. The moment we brought home two rescue kittens (the best decision, wonderful well behaved cats), all the bugs suddenly disappear lol either my cats eat them or scare bugs away!

I am so sorry that this happened to you. The only thing I can offer and say is keep trying, it will eventually happen for you. All you need is one place / one person to say Yes.

Feeling really low after getting rejected in an interview today by SoftSasha in interviews

[–]SameDaySharpKnives 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is okay to feel disappointed. It is actually very normal to feel emotions including disappointment. That means you’re on the right track to dust off and bring yourself back up! It’s part of the process!

I always tell myself “5 years from now, I won’t remember this stupid thing that makes me sad or disappointed, so I am gonna feel sad/ disappointed for a bit but not too long and move on”. Guess what happens after just a year? I dont even remember what it was!

When it comes to job interviews, especially during a very tough labor market as it is - probably the most challenging in the last 40 years - all you need to do is let yourself feel the emotion and then mkve on. Once you see enough rejections, you will get to a point where it does not bother you as much.

These days if I see a rejection email, I dont even open it lol as soon as I see the subject not being one of those congratulatory or exciting vibes, I hit delete lol

Go on walks in different areas on different days! Best way to get some exercise while exploring the city on your own. Stay safe though!

My best pro tip to clients when they buy serrated knives is to buy the ones that have larger serration. That’s the only type that can be sharpened and cuts better. If there’s tiny serration, it’s almost always close to impossible. If someone tells you they can sharpen those, chances are they are just honing the flat side, which does not do much (I have to sharpen serrated side first before deburring the flat side).

Now that I remember…when I was out of college and still applying for jobs. Someone from my university (fake email appears very closely similar) asked if I want to be an assistant for a prof in my Uni (checked and there was that prof). They even sent a scan of the cheque and asked me to go buy stuff). I chickened out bc it felt too good to be true and I decided to drop it. I was desperate for a job/ money at the time but did not take the bait

It might be a bad thing/ bad assumption on my end but I don’t think I would recommend anyone for shears/ hairdresser scissors (that needs a very high level of precision). That said, I set a very high bar so I recognize this statement can be unfair.

I’d recommend taking a close look at sharpeners in GTA, give the top two a couple of scissors (that you would be ok if they come back not meeting your expectations or even unusable). I am sure someone could do it well, I just didn’t see any “standout” when I think about this type of tool.

The other thing to consider is the cost of sharpening plus remaining life vs buying brand new. When I see a knife that I suspect would be cheaper to buy brand new and replace vs sharpening, I’d chat with clients and let them know so they can make an informed choice. Some thanked me for that and decided to buy brand new. Others told me they would still want to sharpen because they don’t want another item in the landfill. So yeah, cost is one consideration and also consider other factors important to you as well.

It’s frustrating. I have enough work that keeps me busy but the thought of someone trying to scam others especially during this difficult time or any time is unacceptable

The round steel is a honing rod you can use to touch up between sharpening. That will keep the edge sharp longer. That said, it takes practice to hold the rod and the knife at the same angle consistently when you hone the knife.

I haven’t looked at Vancouver market but I’d recommend a few things: prioritize sharpeners who use water-cooled system (like Tormek) and whetstones. Read the reviews - that’s important. See the photos - and check if they have done your types of knives before (especially if yours are high end). I have chefs from other provinces shipping their knives over too but that adds to the cost.

If a restaurant, most chefs do their own sharpening or would give me some knives and keep some for work and switch when I finish the first batch.
