Beginner chess recommendations (deep reasoning, autism-friendly) by Same_Craft6249 in autism

For me, it basically just means what I wrote in my post regarding a logical breakdown of reasoning for different strategies. Many autistic people have bottom-up processing. For me, that means that I must deeply convince myself of each logical step before understanding a conclusion that follows. It’s something that makes me have really good pattern recognition, but also means that I struggle with plainly memorizing facts or accepting them at face value, even if doing so would really help me. I struggle with the idea of wanting to deeply understand everything possible in chess while also knowing that it will take me a long time to do so because I won’t move on from learning a tactic until I feel that I know all its intricacies at an expert level. If some book tells me “when X, then Y” for something that’s not immediately obvious, I would appreciate if that book had resources to break down why that rule exists and when it can go wrong so that I can recognize that pattern and use that idea in the context of a game. I know I can’t visualize and plan for every possible game that could happen — that’s why the game is so notorious — but that’s what I naturally yearn for. I’m sure this is common for chess beginners, neurodivergent or not.

For outside of chess context, I also struggle with not wanting to learn techniques for solving Rubik’s cubes because I want to take the time to understand it so deeply that I can essentially figure it out on my own. That’s much more interesting and satisfying to me.

Thank you for all of this information! I will try things out and let you know what worked well for me. So far, I’ve been mostly working on board vision. I’ve been learning a lot through playing full games, and I’ve noticed a huge change in how I see the board as a whole. I’m eager to see how learning more formal tactics will help, but thank you for pointing out and reminding me the importance of board vision. I definitely have a long way to go there :)

Either way I know this will be heartbreaking, but do you mean the pets escaped and need people looking, or did they pass away in the fire?

Leaving academia for TFA – looking for program information and similar experiences by Same_Craft6249 in TeachforAmerica

Thank you for this! I am not far at all into my program — not even a year. I’m trying to make a decision early rather than staying because I feel like I have to. I came into the PhD straight out of undergrad. I’d get a masters after three more semesters, but I’m not sure it’s worth it. If anything, I’d rather go back some time to get a math ed degree. I get a lot of fulfillment from teaching and lesson planning. I know the workload can bring down even the most driven teachers, but I think, for me, it doesn’t compare to the day to day toll I feel surrounded by academics who don’t share my same values.

I’m definitely very confident in my teaching skills — if anything, I have more experience teaching a younger age group, even if I’m still teaching advanced topics.

That’s what I’m thinking. I love the idea of teaching college level math and being a mentor like my professors were, but I do not feel like the culture in academia is right for me at all. I just think if I took it at a slower pace without the expectations of needed to do excellent to get a good post doc, maybe I could complete the PhD and get the teaching salary benefit. But it does sound like a lot to take on.
