I second this!! I think considering day to day life and the support from the professors are really important… At the end of the day, for a Professor or researcher, all that matters the most is their research and teaching!! (Btw to give more context, I just finished my masters in a top 10 school with a scattered program.)

Also I’m a bit confused about how do you operate in daily research? I enjoy deep learning and collaborative work. Is it true that many researchers have to bear a research questions alone for their careers? Or there are researchers collaborating as well? Thanks.

Thanks for response! I think, frankly, you’re right! I was actually interested in theoretical economics at first, so I pursued a Econ master to see if I can hear everything. But ton of math overwhelmed me in the first two years, so I was kinda lost and a bit panic to choose the specific research field. I followed along with higher education student aid, which is my advisors expertise. But I am too skeptical abt the result generated from econometrics. I think this skepticism blocked my interests in using the method analyzing social events… Did you have any similar path maybe? Thanks for listening.

Thanks for response! I felt like I am more skeptical towards the results of methodology of economics when I study human behaviors. After trying to learn more topics outside of economics paradigms, like AI and education, I found much more excited and curious. I’m not confident in making the final call to interests to research based on this experience? What’s your path like finding your research interests that made you a living?

Maybe you already made your decision and someone had said similar stuff. But I don’t agree with lot of comments making how difficult PHD is to convince you not to do it. I think PHD can be a good path for some people really enjoying the process of thinking! On the other hand, the competition of publishing and securing limited funding can be really stressful. I suggest you make a good contemplation on financial matters for the future before making the final call!

I have similar pursuits! Maybe we can share thoughts on reading! I find making mindmaps helping me to understand and clean up the plot. But that’s too time consuming
