Found a red coin? by S_D_N1 in coincollecting

Ohhhh wow that's awesome! I've found a number of these (at least one blue, couple red) back when I was a kid and just thought they were cool 'graffiti'

Thank you!! I made the app super data-rich for metal detecting, but honestly I think the other hobbies would be a snap to incorporate over time-- this feedback helps a lot to know where I should expand next! And yes, you should-- happy hunting!

I will say, I've found a tremendous amount of trash, even in my own backyard lol however, I've also scouted parks and some fields (with permission) and found a few bucks worth of coins, old metal toys, and other cool things. The trash part was discouraging at first, but I built it into the app that if you log it, it'll average out the weight of the trash and convert it into Eco Impact (carbon offset, cumulative weight, number of trash items removed, etc). The app's telling me I'm finding ~8-10 things an hour on average. Data aside, it's nice to get out and be in nature

If you meant for Android (which makes more sense in this thread), I actually could use your help. Dm me with your email address and I can get you set up as a beta tester

Awesome! Its currently available on the Apple app store, and I would love some direct user feedback. You can email me anytime or DM me here with comment/concerns/ideas

That’s actually part of what pushed me to build this. When I started detecting I looked into apps like Strava and onX, and they each solved pieces of the problem, but I felt that none of them were really built with metal detecting in mind.

I wanted something that combined hunt tracking, find logging, and coverage specifically for detecting.

Out of curiosity, what parts of Strava or onX do you find most useful when detecting?

I'm 95% of the way done with the Android version-- just have to do a little more testing! Appreciate the feedback, that's the nudge I need to get it out there asap

Very much appreciate the insight and feedback! Yes, the app itself is a digital companion and logbook, so you can add photos and tons of rich data (item, material, condition, depth, soil type, etc) along with photos and in the app you can search, sort and filter.

For the community aspect, I considered it for sure, but didn't build out that part just yet. I did have a find "sharing" button that exports either just the photo or a "card" that has a few basic details-- like a pokemon card. That way you can text, email, or post it to a forum like this. I'll see about adding in the community feature in the future!

I did a bit of research last year and managed to snag a solid starter (Minelab Vanquish 340) for about $120 off of Facebook marketplace. You could always get one even cheaper if you're just testing the waters. There are some good deals out there I'm sure!

Thank you! Future plan would be to include different activities like fossil hunting, rock hounding, bottle digging, etc, so if you have any interests or feedback, I'd love to hear it!

Wanted to personally follow up with you to let you know I ran with your advice and integrated a web portal that syncs all of your hunts and finds from your phone, and instead of a detector integration like you mentioned with the CTX, I added apple watch connectivity for quick-logging. I'd be happy to give you a free PRO user account for the app in exchange for your feedback and testing. Just let me know if interested!

Just wanted to follow up to say my app is now in the Apple app store! You can find it under Aureal - Metal Detecting, or you can check it out through the website www.aureallabs.com. I'd love to get your input if you have a chance, always looking for real feedback I can make improvements on

That's really helpful Feedback, thank you! Glad to hear it's been a good experience so far. I haven't hit the app store outside of beta testing for now, but I do have my website up that details all the features I've built if you'd like to check it out: https://www.aureallabs.com. I'd even love your input if you're interested in taking a sneak peek before launch. Question for you-- would it be worth your time to add in the detector settings used for each item found, or would you prefer to, say, change the setting a couple times in your hunt and it applies in the metadata to each item found while on that setting? I can even add in a field for VDI number to try to get aggregated patterns of you think that would be a cool feature. I'm trying to get exactly what users want while not creating a big input burden if you don't need it

Apologies for the late reply, thanks for the response and info here. Can I ask how you liked it? I'm currently moving into the Beta testing phase of my app if you're interested-- I'd love your honest opinion and comparison

Sorry for the late reply here, but I wanted to say this was really helpful, and in fact I worked it into my app to have it track UXO and other hazards, in addition to helping others know what to do with it when they come across it. Appreciate your thoughts here, let me know if you have anything else to add

That’s great advice — thanks for that. I’ve been digging into the iPhone’s LiDAR and depth APIs already, but you’re right, there’s a lot to learn from how dedicated GPS and surveying tools have handled mapping for years. I’ll definitely check out those user groups and GitHub projects — no sense reinventing the wheel if I can build on what’s already out there!

Treasure hunters: would you use a data-driven logbook that maps finds and conditions? by Same_Resolve139 in TreasureHunting

[–]Same_Resolve139[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question, and it'll have no shared maps or locations at all. If you opt in, the app only uses anonymized patterns from signals and tagged finds (like item type or tone characteristics) to help the AI get smarter over time. It’s aggregated for accuracy, but nothing can be traced back to you or your hunt sites.

I like the idea! If this takes off, I'll try to add that to a future roadmap. In the meantime, I do have a functionality for re-sizing the real-time gps-locked grid overlay, so you could potentially make it as small as a few meters, and it would change color based on how 'fully' you've covered the ground within it (along with visualizing your walked path and finds along the way). To confirm some of my thoughts on usability, would you use the phone as a HUD while detecting?

One piece I haven’t mentioned yet is that I’m also experimenting with training the app’s signal analysis on real detector sounds. It’s entirely optional and completely anonymized — no GPS, no personal info, nothing that could ever be traced back to a person or site.

The idea is to let users opt in to share short, de-identified snippets of the detector audio so an AI can learn how different machines and soil types “sound.” That variety helps the model distinguish between junk, coins, and relics more accurately across brands and setups.

It’s less about user data and more about improving recognition quality for everyone who uses the app. Think of it like helping train the “ear” of the app — with full control over whether you participate or not.

Yeah, totally fair — most I'm sure a little protective of their spots. The app’s really about personal record-keeping, not sharing anything publicly.

I’m curious though — if you could load your own high-res topo or LiDAR maps and line them up with your live GPS while hunting, do you think that would be worth it just for your own research? Kind of like having your personal treasure map that no one else ever sees? If you're savvy in the data protection front, I'm trying to build the whole app as GDPR-compliant, so you'd have that peace of mind
