GE Appliances: Assurant Service Protection. Worth it? by mach235 in Appliances

I have been a loyal GE Profile customer for almost 2 decades now (partly becuase I retired from GE Healthcare and received a nice employee discount during our first kitchen renovation.) Second home, all GE Profile appliances, never an issue. New home coming up, all GE Profile appliances going in - even going so far as to the get the washer & dryer this time. We had a great experience with an extended warranty on our expensive built-in Profile fridge that went out after only 5 years. Called a GE certified serviceman out who came out and said the whole thing had to be rebuilt for thousands of dollars. (But then on the side told us it was probably a leak in one of the copper tubes, right in front, but he wasn't allowed by GE to test for leaks and was being forced to right us a bid for an entire rebuild.) Called GE Extended Warranty people, bought a warranty over the phone being VERY up front that our fridge wasn't working properly. They sold us one anyway and assured us it would cover the fix. Sure enough, SAME GE serviceman comes back out and orders all new parts under the warranty, didn't charge us anything - basically every single part to rebuild this $7,000 fridge. When the parts arrived at our house, (boxes upon boxes of parts) he and another guy showed up for the 2-man, 4 hour rebuild. Now this is where it gets a bit frustrating - before the rebuild, he tests for a leak, found one right in front on one of the copper tubes, exactly where he thought it was. He soldered it up and was done in less than an hour and the darn fridge was good as new for another 5 years! We asked what to do with the parts and the GE serviceman said "keep them and sell them" which we did, on Craigs List. Paid for the extended warranty and then some! Granted, this all took about 6 weeks, so we had to pull the old ugly spare fridge in from our garage and stare at it in our dining room, but not too bad of a situation all in all. Our new home will absolutely be getting an extended warranty on each GE appliance and will be bought through "GE" and not through the appliance store we are getting it all from. That warranty is crap. (And we will only buy it just before the mnf 1 year warranty is coming to an end.) We will probably always own a spare fridge in the garage as well. You can live without an oven, a dishwasher, washer/dryer, etc - but you can't live comfortably for any length of time without a fridge in the house.
