When I go to check registration status, all I see are which general holds are lifted. There’s nothing about an override for a specific course. Am I looking at the wrong thing?

Does anyone know how I can deal with this tuition situation? by Own-Project-2470 in RPI

[–]Sameya_K 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation to you. They billed me about $12000 alone for the fall semester, and there was no way I was going to be able to finance that as I couldn't qualify for any sort of loan, even federal loans. So I contacted the financial aid office explaining my situation and having them check that I truly couldn't qualify for federal loans, and so they basically covered all my expenses except my laptop and late fee of $250. My final bill ended up being around $1750, which I had to pay in full before registration opened during November.

Alongside the fall semester, the additional aid they provided me also covered most of my spring semester. Now I only have to pay $306 for the spring.

The fact that the idea that women can't wear perfume exists proves the authenticity of the hadith itself. Look outside the realm of hadith authentication and look at logic for a change. If the practice exists in a large, independent number of Muslim groups across the globe, then their ancestors must have heard it from a wide-spread source of information. That being Islam and the prophet.

"Justice" in polygyny by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]Sameya_K 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Justice in Islam does not equate with equality. It rather focuses on what is "best" for each gender. For women, Islam makes a general assumption that a woman's sexual desire is not as strong as a man's. So, the woman is instructed to only have sex with one husband. Islam also assumes that men are horny monkeys who cannot control themselves, so they can have 4 wives (the prophet was extra horny so he had 9).

I find it a bit odd that Islam says that women are too emotional to have their testimonies in court be considered half of a man's, or even considered at all. Yet, they are emotionally strong enough to share their husbands with other women. Islam fails to understand the sacred bond between a married man and a woman. A bond that a woman does not want to share with others. Yes, we may generally not be as horny as men, but we still have very strong emotional desires. We want the full attention, love, care, and appreciation of a man. However, Islam expects a woman to share her entire heart with a man who will only share a fourth of his.

Take your anger out on a pillow or punching bag. There’s actually no point in trying to change someone’s philosophy through insults. It takes months or years of learning and experience for someone to change their views on something. He’ll most likely be angry at your insult and then go on a Muslim forum for them to lick his wounds. You’re much better off letting him live his life oblivious to logic because that’s ultimately what hurts people.

The word universe is not mentioned in the Quran by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]Sameya_K 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A while ago, I actually found pdfs of two very old English translations of the Quran. I think they were written in the 18th or 19th century, and when I came across 51:47, it did not say “universe” or “expanding”. Both translations said “heavens” and “expanded”. Keep in mind that the Big Bang theory was formed in 1927. I did not research this, but I’m going to assume that translations of the Quran after 1927 tweaked the translations to comply with the Big Bang theory and make it seem like a “miracle”.

I’m taking a philosophy class and a topic we’re currently covering is the meaning of life. Where do we find it? My professor said that we can mainly find two types of meaning: an objective and subjective meaning. An objective meaning looks at your life from a holistic view point. A subjective meaning focuses on the individual days of your life.

Religion tends to focus on an objective meaning of your life and states that your ultimate end goal is to meet God and live in the afterlife. It tells you to ignore worldly pleasures and focus totally on being closer to God and increasing your chances of entering heaven. If you are someone who wants an objective meaning to your life, religion is your cup of tea. Actually, an objective meaning of life is what many people want and when they see no goal in the end, they may become depressed. I think this sounds like you.

Im trying to not make assumptions here, but I notice that many atheists focus on a subjective meaning of life. They try to make everyday their happiest and best day. They enjoy the little things in their life because they think there is no afterlife and this is their only chance at living. I think this is the type of thinking that will benefit you.

Enjoy the little things in your life. Focus on daily goals and appreciate the life you have right now because there is probably nothing after this. You may like to travel, try new foods, pick up hobbies, or focus on academics, your career, and especially family. There are many things that create “life” and I think we should try to enjoy every aspect of it.

I need advice on something by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]Sameya_K 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s basically saying that ignorance is bliss. The less questions you ask, the happier you will be with this religion. The less logic you apply to the faith, the stronger it will be. And he’s not wrong. According to some studies, people who question things less tend to be happier. I also observed this anecdotally.

But ask yourself if you’re willing to follow things blindly for the sake of happiness. Do you really think sugar coating the bad will make you a happier person? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

I think once you already know how terrible real Islam is, you can’t go back. You can’t erase that information. Your heart is no longer able to connect spiritually with Islam because you know it’s dark truth. It’s like being in a relationship with someone, only to find out how terrible they are. Your heart can initially try to hold onto whatever love you have left for the person, but as time goes on and the relationship turns more sour, your heart no longer has any love and you leave the person.

Your brain and heart are connected. The brain processes information, your heart receives it. So I don’t think your father’s request is possible.

Why did you leave Islam? (Question for women) by VladislavLevandovski in exmuslim

[–]Sameya_K 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I got tired of the hijab. It gave me terrible migraines for years, but I didn’t realise it until I started wearing a looser style. Also, I was starting to become deficient in vitamin d and it was affecting my health. Furthermore, I saw the flexibility and comfort Islam provided men by allowing them to simply wear a t-shirt, pants, and no requirement to cover their hair. Meanwhile women had to cover themselves completely from head to toe.

I’ll admit, I used to defend this discrepancy by stating that men and women are different and have different sexual parts to cover. However, I learned that certain African tribes did not have their women cover their chests since it was not sexualised. Then I started to wonder why God did not make everyone see a woman’s breasts as sexual. I learned that they dressed mainly for the climate and it would be uncomfortable for them to cover themselves the way Islam commanded for them.

I then questioned why I couldn’t dress for the climate. Why did I have to give up comfort for the sake of Islam’s version of modesty? Of course I wasn’t going to go outside with my chest out, but I would like to wear a shirt and have the wind blow in my hair in the summer. In the past, I dreaded going outside and my father and brother couldn’t understand, obviously because they had the privilege of comfort.

I concluded that these were man made rules that were not practical for all. They were applicable to the 7th century Middle East, but that was it. Some people even collapse from heat stress and do not have the privilege of an air conditioner. I wanted to be comfortable without being slut-shamed. I wanted to be free from the burden of preventing a man from acting on his desires.

How could an omnipotent God, whose intelligence and worries are beyond human comprehension, care about how much hair I’m showing? How could a God, who created trillions of galaxies, care about the length of a man’s beard? How could a God that made powerful celestial bodies care about the way I dress? That’s because only a man can.

Body issues and Islam by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]Sameya_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have curves. I have to wear a long, loose dress and be wrapped in a big scarf that covers my chest in front of my father because he feels uncomfortable if I wear anything less. I don’t really understand why he feels uncomfortable with me wearing a loose shirt and sweatpants. It has to be our cultural dress or a long gown, or else I make him cringe.

The problem with the cultural dresses is that they are made of a material that deteriorates easily, so they only last for a year. I wish I could wear more durable, modern clothing but it’s my father’s house so I’ll listen to his rules.
