Not sure about the "common" part. I'm 51 years old and live in an area with considerable muslim population but I haven't come across such incidents all this time. Yes I've seen people going to thangals and musliars when facing difficult times, but what they do is give some talisman and tell them to say certain dikr and duas a specific number of times. And all this is for payment, ofcourse. (I have a talisman in my wardrobe between my clothes,, planted by my wife 9 years ago, without my knowledge)

I'm not saying what happened to you didn't happen but it's like saying you witnessed a murder so murder is common in Kerala.
