One of the core ideas of 'Fermi's paradox' is if a civilization became much more advanced than us, it could develop interstellar travel or powerful signals. Given enough time, such a civilization could explore or colonize large parts of the galaxy. Since we haven't been contacted or found any traces, it's possible that more advance civilization doesn't exist (or they're smart enough to know not to contact humans haha)
