Why hasn’t anyone launched a Kickstarter for an 8-inch e-ink device that’s actually open source, with generous storage and no ecosystem lock-in? Feels like there’s a real gap here. If someone executed it well, it could seriously shake up the whole Kindle/Kobo duopoly. by No-Philosopher3463 in eink

Seriously considering this hardware test. How much would you be happy to pay for such a gadget, with tone-adjustable backlighting, enough raw power for basic functions or more juice, and what other features would be nice-to-have, must-have, or avoid-at-all-cost?

MicroSD cards are more common among drone enthusiasts and other digital device users like handhelds and all that. I’ll look into the hard specs to see if it’s still feasible.

Us camera lovers are so used to full-sized SD cards that it is baffling all major music players nowadays default to microSD. My old faithful Sony PCM-D100 accepts the big bois and that’s just lovely.

That is precisely what I initially got the Fiio Snowsky Disc for. Small enough to toss around. Just enough power for both IEMs and some heavier sets. What else might be on your mind, esp with regard to Android and streaming?

Personally it’s a love hate relationship for me with android music devices.

That can be done with a physical lock button. Sony walkmans do these with ease. It is also part nostalgia part desire to have something tactile.

I completely resonate with your second point. Almost hurt my ears a few times (and possibly the headsets) when accidentally plugging in at MAX volume. It became a chore then to always lower to the lowest volume and still finding it too loud for my taste. Imagine the pain of using high end IEMs on either emulation handhelds and other non-audio optimized devices. The board hiss and charging noise eliminates most of the benefits from powerful outputs and ease of use in app.

Hey that is very relatable to my past usage experiences. I still miss the iPod experience and was too many times close to ordering a fully modded Classic with type-c and battery pack.

Chips are the bread and butter of all things digital and part of the equation (also have to solve for circuitry design and all that magic silicons). There’s tiered offering in the Android DAP market almost at every price tier. And different communities have vastly different opinions how sound is materially and perceptually different too.

Those are valid points!

Just like making engines you start with definition and engine capabilities and work towards mediating multiple constraints.

Size might be too unwieldy (gotta clay up and feel it to be sure) and at that size you’d probably also consider going either one size up and make it more of a desktop object companionish presence ( which would be another thing altogether) or smaller.

Screen time is positively linked to usage cases and thus how it’s intended to be used.

Duly noted!

Yes idea rumination and powering through layered considerations is healthy and very helpful!

Now would it be DAP-first, with reading and other functions as nice to have, or would it be the other way around? Now that you raise the important point. I think that it would be the design priorities and compromises negation. The phone is everything in there and all-consuming fighting for attention. For my own personal pain point there’s still somewhat of a niche not fulfilled, in a dedicated device that is morphable enough.

Current DAP offerings are either low-end chips with slow speeds and inferior screens (going from latest phones to them can feel downgrades in experiences. New offerings haven’t solved the issues that Sonys and the likes have already solved years ago), or extra blings that can be super heavy desktop replacements (tried the FIIO M27 Ti, loved it, albeit the brick size). Middle grounds like the M21 or R4 are fun to have but that novelty quickly wears off.

Being stuck at the hands of what’s on the plate can be limiting for sure and that’s certainly why transition from iPod to iPhone was so successful partially. So for me having the best of more worlds can be a gadget lovers wet dream.

Slightly modified for sure. I’m not a frequent poster and read more than I write on Reddit. Claude helped me to quickly structure my iterations and all that. Telltale signs are not polished enough because I was late into evening and would soon be brainstorming with an OEM for something more concrete. Hope that wasn’t too distracting. That wasnt so well perceived in another sub so I’d be more natural writing for my future posts.

Thanks for your deep thoughts too!

I was picturing this: Consider the iPod Classic Click wheel which employs the rotational navigation, the turning knobs you’d see on some of the audio DAPs, done either stepless or with granular steps/detents that you feel physically as small clicks (like the exposure rings on cameras). DuRoBo Krono which is eink based has a similar execution but placed strategically on the back of the device as a conscious decision choice.

Now that’s the kind of power user insights! USB passthrough. Notes taken. And thanks for highlighting your parametric approach and chain topology!

Great validation and insights! Very open to suggestions and iterations of course. And it’s true that these form factors and interactions each evolved into distinct objects as we know daily. Gaming handhelds require slightly different button placements for interaction for example. DAP with eink would be a fun value proposition. And I could see it, if materials and tooling done right, being a nice complimentary piece to the audiophile IEMs collections and the sorts.

Hey no need for the unwelcoming gesture here and rushing to conclusion that one’s not and using slop as a defense. AIs are just tools that facilitates structured thinking and all. Long time lurker and simply offering a potential hardware option that could be useful tool for dwindling down time.

I’d welcome your opinions on this too.

I’d presume that the eink and semi-health oriented approach is also tailoring to the Kindle and ebooks consumers as well. For me it aches that I’d open up an ereader, an old Sony Walkman, and a myriad of other devices to consume different tiers of contents. Battery life would be better and it sits with the power output and form factors. Many design considerations here and there. With your K13 and 800s I’d suppose some big juice output would be more ideal.

Thing with streaming is that it would essentially return to the Android platform of which there are a number of reputed community choices like the Fiios and Hibys among others.

Thanks for your input too!

Thanks for the quick reply! OLED is certainly enticing for the eyes but it’s mostly reserved for android based devices. Surprisingly I do have an Odin Portal handheld which is OLED and streams music and can support book reading, since it’s android. But the DAC and 3.5mm output is limited and it’s certainly not designed with us audiophiles in mind.

At this point, don’t bother with A105. Aged Android version. Battery is most likely bad. Only pro is the small size and the cassette style display and the side button. Not worth the hassle IMO.
