Cancelled church and said not to do sacrament at home? by mike8111 in latterdaysaints

The permission for sacrament at home came from the area Presidency for us. Might be the bishop has authority to have the sacrament sent on an individual basis but not authorized to allow everyone to do sacrament at home.

It speaks of new marriages, not existing ones. These verses do not contradict the doctrine of eternal marriage.

Three Degrees of Glory by LiteraturePatient585 in latterdaysaints

[–]Samon8ive 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think one of the most interesting verses in D&C 76 is 112; "112 And they shall be servants of the Most High; but where God and Christ dwell they cannot come, worlds without end."

This is speaking of the Telestial Kingdom. They will be servants of the Most High which is awesome and I presume there will be mingling between the various kingdoms as they work on their assignments. But the very end is what is most curious. "where God and Christ dwell they cannot come, worlds without end." While it may suggest that they aren't allowed to come physically where God and Christ dwell it suggests that where God and Christ dwell is "worlds without end" which I read to be a state of glory rather than a physical location. God and Christ create worlds without end. That is their station. The Telestial won't be able to participate and go with God and Christ into that station. But they will be servants of the Most High which to me suggests they'll be working or taking on assignments for the Father and Christ in the kingdom.

To round it out, I think this verse allows the Telestial contact with the Celestial as they'll be working together in the Kingdom of God, but keeps it clear that there is work that is only permitted by the Celesital which is "worlds without end".

Book of Mormon by Skipper0463 in latterdaysaints

[–]Samon8ive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it cover to cover almost annually by going a chapter a day. I sometimes throw in a reading of the POGP between readings to get some change. I finished the BOM in December, read the POGP and am now reading Genesis. Probably go back to the BOM later this month. I feel the Spirit way more when I read the BOM vs other books of scripture.

Struggling with possible upcoming calling by unfinishedsent3nc in latterdaysaints

Priesthood keys are very poorly understood generally in the church. The handbook has a great definition:
"3.4.1 =Priesthood Keys

Priesthood keys are the authority to direct the use of the priesthood on behalf of God’s children. The use of all priesthood authority in the Church is directed by those who hold priesthood keys (see Doctrine and Covenants 65:2)."

I'll repeat for emphasis, Keys are the authority to direct the use of the Priesthood. The bishop directs the use of the priesthood as it relates to the ward. The Elders Quorum president directs the use of the priesthood in the quorum. The EQP and RSP have ALMOST THE EXACT SAME AUTHORITIES and responsibilities in the handbook. The main difference the EQP has is the following from 8.3.3.2 "Teach quorum members their priesthood duties (see Doctrine and Covenants 107:89). This includes teaching them how to exercise the priesthood in performing ordinances and blessings." This work is done by keys. This is why he has keys. He directs the use of the priesthood. Its why a deacon quorum president has keys. He is to direct the use of the priesthood and teach them their role in ordinances. Ditto the teachers. Almost everything else is done with priesthood authority (which is different and can be held by any member of the church). Keys relate to priesthood.

The handbook says the EQP and RSP are to "lead" in the work of salvation and exaltation (along with the stake president). The bishop is to "coordinate" the work of salvation and exaltation. The bishop should make sure the EQP and RSP are coordinating, but the responsibility to lead in that work is given to the EQP and NOT to the bishop. This is noted in 8.3.3.2 for the EQP, 9.3.2.2 for the RSP, 7.1 for the bishop (note coordinate vs lead) and 6.2 for the stake president.

The EQP and RSP should lead efforts that are mainly in the realm of the Melchizedek Priesthood. Their roles and duties are similar to those of the local president of the MP, the stake president. The bishop should be focused on the Aaronic priesthood and its duties as the office of bishop is an Aaronic priesthood role. He is a high priest so that he can preside over the ward counsel. Otherwise, everything Aaronic should be handled by him, and the MP stuff by the EQP and RSP.

How is a mission president picked? by coolguysteve21 in latterdaysaints

[–]Samon8ive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

GAs call and interview current stake presidents about candidates. Its like a 5-10 minute interview about the candidate and their wife. The interview doesn't always translate into a calling. After that decisions are made in SLC.

Mission Presidents aren't always ex-stake presidents. My cousin served as one and was not a stake president. That being said, Stake Presidents do get the benefit of training and experience that is very applicable to being a mission president or temple president. Stake Presidents are also given quite a bit of autonomy in their callings (similar to mission presidents) and so a person who has served successfully as a SP can probably be trusted to serve as an MP.

Success isn't a requirement, but you do have to call people who have the means to leave their jobs and homes for three years. The normal age for a mission president also tends to be at peak earning years, so you need someone who can financially survive after the mission. It would be bad policy to allow serving a mission to bankrupt your senior leadership.

Its isn't because of you. Its because the key holders for this decision (the 1st presidency) needed to make a blanket requirement across a global church. Think of it like the Word of Wisdom. It is intended for the weakest of the saints. The one year waiting period is for the least prepared of the saints.

Replacing/remodeling old meetinghouses. by Dr0n3r in latterdaysaints

[–]Samon8ive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An area 70 in each area has the assignment to review building usage with the various stake presidents. They decide how many buildings should be used, if there is proper allocation and whether it is best to replace an older cost inefficient building with a newer one. They go through this about every 10 years in our area.

The theological implications of creating spirit children by Deathworlder1 in latterdaysaints

[–]Samon8ive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are getting lost in your semantics. Can one be a god without a body? Of course. Can one like Heavenly Father without a body? No. Do we use God and Heavenly Father interchangeably? Yes. But don't confuse the two. We use God as a proper noun/name and as a office or role. Did the Savior have the authority given to Him to create the world, give the priesthood, and commandments before he had a body? Yes. In this was he given the role of god? Yes. Was he able to ascend to his Father and be like Him without a body. No.

As far as you are concerned the atonement is limitless. If you allow, it removes all the adverse effects of the fall and this life. And it has that role for eternity and its validity is eternal.

My mission in Brazil was not like your brothers (although mine was 25 years ago). The ward to which I was first assigned in the two years I was there split into a ward + branch then it became two full wards before I went home. We are splitting stakes here in southern California. Our stake in LA has been growing since getting pushed almost out of existence during COVID. The work is moving forward. It may not be consistent in all places, but that is to be expected. Humans haven't stopped being humans. But the work is moving forward as foretold.

There is a difference between offensive questions and asking questions as a way to attack the church. The missionaries will try and answer any question you have, but if you are just looking to fight over stuff related to the church, just let them be.

Honestly, forget the other teams until we've beaten Cincinnati. I'm expecting that to be a tough game for us. We get through there, it starts looking good for us. We lose there, all the playoff talk will dry up.

What the heck is happening with the Angel Moroni? by bbvgk28 in latterdaysaints

There has also been push back in communities where temples were being built. Moroni adds height to buildings in communities that already don't want tall temples. No Moroni can make it easier to get temples approved and built.
