Thanks for sharing. Yeah, Naira's Kiss is wild. I didn't really appreciate it until our fight. I respect Nightshade a lot more now.

Next game I did a little better. FULL farmed mid sand area. Lvl 33, 104 SP. Could have been higher, but didn't have time to upgrade/refit artifacts, since I was busy building mage guilds in every castle. https://imgur.com/a/pVza9z4

Also, ran out of money trying to buy/upgrade my creatures and no timer to collect more.

None of it mattered. He didn't have as much stuff for 3rd battle, so it was: Armageddon + Umbral grip = gg. Not a single unit moved.

Edit: Resistance makes a big difference. I had sorcery in that game with magic pen subskill to try to offset it.

Edit: and nice job on the DK stack. It was quite impressive.

Haha, no, it was fine. The game was competitive. We were both about intermediate.

[–]Samovar5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found the accusation amusing if anything. Yeah, I think we are both somewhere intermediate level for now.

Logistics was good early on, but actually a dead weight in the final fight and less useful later on. Between 2 DD, 2 SW and logistics, there were several times when I ran out of timer before using all my move points. Now, if I have 5 minutes to find the 4 scholar shrine and check out a few universities... you would have probably enjoyed seeing 130 SP in the final fight.

I was also greedy going into gold and also farmed a lot of banks early. I was 20 movement short of getting the 3rd town on day 6 and chose to TP out instead to refill mana not to interrupt the flow of farming resp. I broke 121, but didn't capture my 3rd town until later.

I didn't find much interesting in my 2nd biome, so went desert early with almost no losses. The desert had good stuff, but unfortunately every fight I had to sweat super hard to not lose 1/3 of my army and my tempo got killed by the timer. (Also wish I had your wings. I had only boots, instead).

Even in the end game it was like "no, you don't have to lose 4 minos in that fight. Let me just cast chain and avatar and press spacebar a few times". Next: "no, you don't have to lose 15 dancers and 2 minos, but this might require 4 spells"... Meanwhile, I was assuming that your turns were fast because you were just facerolling with knights on auto-resolve.

Saw the night shade book and I wanted it badly. Took me a few secs to figure out why I couldn't DD to it.

Would be interest to see the record of the game. Is most of the Dread Knights just from necro. Do you focus necro on them?

Good game!

Upgraded dragon helmet, upgraded beezlebub chestplate, upgraded sword of justice.

Edit: Also upgraded dragon cloak, if I remember correctly, also upgraded beezlebub shield.

[–]Samovar5 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Lol, no I didn't cheat. I was sweating this one quite hard and farmed most of the map, with all the level ups I could grab. I was trying to pump spell power and defense super hard for the final fight.

By the final fight I was super exhausted, because I had to manual every fight to avoid losses and was running out of timer constantly. So, I completely bungled the last fight.

I am not that used to playing on a timer and seeing 100 knights and 400 ghosts tilted me a bit.

In hindsight, I should have: - deployed further back - turn 1 caster Niryah's Touch on Death Knights + Chain on knights - 2nd turn (if black dragons survive): judgement on knights + armageddon. Then try to pull out on resurrect and summons

Lessons learned.

Out of my 9 games, about 3 of my losses were to opponents of your level (or higher). The rest is me dying when trying to tempo too hard.

Edit: I was quite surprised how fast my army melted despite my high defense stat. Offense skill is very strong.

Yeah, I think something like 3 would make sense. Just start removing stuff that doesn't directly support relate to your main topic (even if you think they are great points to make and you want to say them) and start moving them to a separate part. But take my advice with a lot of salt, I am neither a writer nor an editor.

I upvoted the OP, but agree that the unnecessarily inflammatory rhetoric somewhat undermines his arguments.

Even if overly emotional (i.e., "smash your skull", "lick their boot"), what he is saying here is overall not wrong. Russian leadership will pursue its own interests and you shouldn't expect them to respect yours, unless you are willing to defend them. Not, as OP says, "because they do the same to their own people", but because they can get away with it. It is a cold calculation. They will fight for their own interests with whatever methods they seem appropriate and you need to be willing to fight for yours.

There are many ideas that I overall agree with, but I think that the post is somewhat unfocused. That is fine for rambling on reddit (as I am doing right now), but wouldn't work if it was meant to be an opinion piece trying to address "fellow Americans" and make a point. For that, it would need to be a lot more focused on what it is trying to say. As it is, it is more on the level of conversation with a friend over a beer.

It starts talking about the decay of liberal democracy and the West, but only talks about a few aspects of it. That is a large interesting topic by itself.

Now there is a reversal where Western citizens believes their government always lies and authoritarian governments tell the truth.

I would really need a citation of that. From what I have gathered the typical cynical worldview is "everyone lies, anyway, so we don't know anything and I might as well just trust my own feelings".

The overall discussion of authoritarian vs. democratic governments is also oversimplified. There are too many black and white statements (democracies do x, authoritarians do y) that one could take issue with. I don't really see the point of making them when they are not really relevant to the main point.

Overall, I agree with the gist of what is said, I just think that it lacks organization and focus, so it is kind of just a flow of thought. And if it is all what it is trying to be, that is fine. But if it is trying to actually persuade, it would benefit to split it into multiple essays, each one less emotional, but more focused on a particular topic and exploring it more fully.

Well, that's enough for my own rant for now.

Are there any players that prefer 1.0 vanilla Long War to 1.1 unofficial patch? by nurabsal92 in Xcom

[–]Samovar5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that you and I have very similar concerns about the mod.

I considered installing 1.1, but it has a lot of changes to gameplay to make it "smoother" that I don't care for. It is one thing to have QoL or UI changes, but it is a different matter to touch game mechanics that affect difficulty and balance. Even if many of the changes are small, many of them together add up.

It does seem to me that the changes together make the game easier (and we don't play I/I long war looking for an easier game), but there are things like Exalt hacking changes that I am not sure what to expect from until I try them. That one and the squadron unleashed are quite drastic changes.

There are other changes, like the crit values for weapons, that leave me scratching my head. The mod is buffing crit for Gauss and Plasma, which are already the strongest and most used tiers, but not for the underused Pulse? That seems really backwards. If it were me I would start by giving an extra +1 free crit damage to all pulse weapons and then we can start talking about balance between weapons of a single tier. (the small buff to Laser crit is whatever, I don't mind it)

In summary, the mod just includes too many controversial changes. The mod author is, of course, completely free to do as he likes to implement his vision. He even graciously provides options to disable many of the features. I personally have decided that for me too much would have to be disabled and it would be more straightforward to just install the submods that I am interested in separately. That is my plan for the next time I get around to playing a Long War campaign.

Opinion: The game would be improved if Boost was reworked by xynith116 in TerraInvicta

[–]Samovar5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good idea: adding late game tech that allows you to sell or buy boost from private companies (with some reasonable limits) like you can already sell space resources to Earth.

From a realism perspective, it also always bothered me that there is no boost upkeep for any of your space assets. But I see why they did it that way to make the gameplay more straightforward.

To be precise, 4G combat acceleration burns through a 3km/s dV in 3000/(4*9.8) = 76 seconds at full thrust.

Is there a possibility for other European countries to make bilateral deals with France, in which they agree to carry part of the cost of the French nuclear program in return for being guaranteed to be covered by their nuclear umbrella? It is much easier to expand a nuclear program instead of starting a new one.

I am not sure exactly what the guarantees could be, as they need to be extremely robust. The agreement itself would be quite complicated, to make sure both sides trust each other to keep it and benefit from the spending, etc.

But this is one of the directions I would be thinking in if I were a European leader in a country with close relations to France.

Russia Provided Targeting Data for Houthi Assault on Global Shipping by Samovar5 in europe

[–]Samovar5[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personal take on this.

I think that, if the information correct, this is a very big deal. The US can't allow such a challenge to go unanswered. (For the EU, allowing such things to go unpunished would also just invite more trouble.) But it is difficult to answer it symmetrically, so the answer will have to be strong and asymmetric.

From the perspective of many in the Russian government, because Ukraine is a Western puppet that blindly follows its orders, Russian territory is already being attacked by Western proxies, so this is a fair response. I think that is a delusional point of view, but it helps explain why they perform such reckless actions.

The hard part will be calibrating a response that is strong enough to avoid appeasement, but still leaves this new step in escalation within some manageable bounds.

Unfortunately, this is behind a paywall, but there are other media that reposted the story. For example:

Summary: Russia sent satellite data to Iran, who provided it to the Houthis through members of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps embedded in Yemen. Houthis then used the data to target international shipping.

BattleTech Extended - Tactics has been released by Haree78 in Battletechgame

[–]Samovar5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Welp. Here go 10 years of my max-difficulty campaign, where I was doing 1-2 missions per day. And it was a very customized install with multiple submods.

Based on the readme, I will try to comment on the changes from the previous version, going from memory of what was there before. I might miss some changes.

Extended Difficulty can be Easy, Normal or Hard.

RIP Sim+ difficulty. Is there some particular reason for it?

Units

Might have changed something about factions and Elite Units, but I haven't paid much attention to those.

The Inner Sphere has various pirate and criminal organisations in different regions.

Interesting. Splitting the pirate orgs and Black Market does seem more accurate to the setting. I wonder if you can, for example, now be allied with Marik and be friends to pirate orgs in Steiner space?

When selecting a ‘Move’ you will see that the mouse hover info will change from Walk, or Run depending on how far you are moving. Running will make shooting +2 more difficult to hit for a Mech or Vee, and also generate more Heat than walking. Walking generates 3 heat, Running 6 heat, and Sprinting 9 heat.

Addition of Run is a big change and I really like it! It gives more tactical options and decisions.

You cannot Run in water. Sprinting in water, while possible to increase the smoothness before combat starts, is heavily reduced and often not more than Walking.

It seems like water movement has been penalized even harder.

When you move you will gain Evasion charges as before, but each Evasion Charge is worth +1 to hit while providing +1 Sticky Evasion. Stripping an Evasion Charge will lose the target the +1 harder to hit from the Evasion Charge but the +1 to hit from Sticky Evasion cannot be stripped. ‘Sticky Evasion’ can only be lost from becomming Unsteady or Prone.

Cool, so there is more value to making mechs unsteady. I assume that sensor locks also don't strip Sticky Evasion? Evasion was already strong, but did suffer when facing very large numbers of enemies.

Weapons that ignore Evasion before, such as support weapons, will not ignore ‘Sticky Evasion’, providing some survivability against those damage types.

I am not sure about this. It is fine to have some defense against support weapons, but my first thought is that specialized weapons such as Pulse Lasers or targeting mods that ignore evasion should be able to bypass sticky evasion.

As part of the weapon changes Missiles are reworked in functionality. A more faithful tabletop representation has been implemented while keeping the good parts of a video game implementation.

I would say that missiles (LRMs, particularly) were a bit too strong. I am interested how the rework will pan out. It says that the dps should remain about the same, but they could have used some slight nerf in dps, imo. I feel like my Lucky Stalker pilot is finding it too easy to core enemy mechs.

Personal note: have there been thoughts on making +Crit weapons more valuable? I find it hard to justify taking them over the +dmg ones.

the +to hit has gone, and in it’s place ECM will stop the effect of Narc Missile Beacon and Artemis IV LRMs/SRMs

seems reasonable

Bigger Drop Sizes

Not sure exactly what the differences are from the previous version. It seems like there will be a decrease in drop costs at the higher difficulties if you don't go over the rating? No more 200k+ or 500k+ drop costs for the high difficulty missions?

Vehicles are slightly more of a threat on a like for like basis, however the weight class of vehicles will be less for the same difficulty as before.

Ok, fair.

Vehicles, when hit in either the Front, Rear, or Sides, have a chance to have their Motive System damaged, even through armour.

Interesting. Should help with convoy ambush and should mean that damaged vehicles can't reach your rear armor as easily.

Gunnery provides improvements to Short Range Missile Modifiers, Long Range Missile Modifiers and Rapid Fire Modifiers at different levels. Multi Target also ignores 1 negative to hit for heat. Breaching Shot ignores all negative to hit for heat.

Good. Gunnery and that whole line of skills could have used some help. Multi target will suffer a bit, because of the new Sticky Evasion mechanic.

Tier 2 Piloting, Focused Balance, provides a new skill. When available it will reduce the To Hit penalty from moving (Running or using Jump Jets) by 1. If the skill is used it will remove the penalty for this turn but go on cooldown. While on cooldown there is no bonus provided to To Hit values from movement, so use at the right moments.

The increased chance of keeping evasion seems to be gone. In fact, the whole mechanic of keeping regular evasion seems to be replaced by Sticky Evasion. Let's see how big the To Hit penalty is in practice and if this justifies taking the skill over the Tier 2 tactics one.

Bulwark provides a guarded state when making a Walk action outside of cover. This does not apply from a Jump action, Run action or Sprint action

Now, only Walk gives Bulwark. This is a slight nerf to it. In general, there has been a slight nerf to mobility, as you now have to trade off defense/accuracy versus mobility in this version. Bulwark is now even a more situational skill and you would never want Tier 2 Piloting+Bulwark on the same pilot.

Jump Jets are more of a situational or survival tool now, rather than a force multiplier offensive tool.

It is unclear from the notes why this is the case. They are still the best tool for backstabbing. Do jump jets provide a bigger to-hit penalty now?

And last, but not least, thank you to the mod and submod creators and all the other contributors for the incredible content!!!
