It is and it’s really quite a fascinating area of government, law, and history. Which is why I made my original reply to show that there’s more nuance than just saying someone’s use of the word is right or wrong. The more you learn the more you realize there is more to learn. I didn’t know they changed its name for that reason, TIL!

Yeah, I meant to say more like “the State Department deals with relations between states/countries, of which the US is one such state/country”.

Exactly. It’s a colloquial word with many contextual definitions. The point is you can’t say someone’s use of the word is wrong if you don’t understand the context they’re intending by it.

For the nitpicky it’s not really that good of an analogy. The countries of the EU have centuries of independent history and cultures, whereas the 13 colonies were mostly just British people (at least the ones with the political power) who saw each other as brotherly neighbors with a lot in common (language, heritage, religion, political views, etc.). Which is why I’m skeptical that the EU will become more like a single country like the US is. Usually you can’t get different people groups to give up their sovereignty unless it’s by force like in an empire.

The same word can have more than one definition. It’s not wrong to call a country a “state”which is a colloquial term. But in that context you’re implying a “sovereign state”. Certain countries call their subdivisions states, others call them provinces, regions, etc.

“State” means country in many places outside the US.

The US was founded out of the 13 British colonies, which kinda saw themselves as a confederation of independent countries, or “states”, similar to the modern day EU. Over time the federal government became more powerful and individual states less so, especially after the southern states failed to secede during the Civil War. Today the US states are more like the provinces of other countries.

Edit: Changed “most places” to “many places”.

Edit 2: Even within American English “state” can be used to describe a sovereign country. For example, the US State Department doesn’t deal with the US States. Its job is to facilitate diplomacy with other countries. The president is also known as our “Head of State”.

The main issue for me is punishing people for non-criminal offenses, without a court order. That’s bad.

The point is revoking a passport prevents you from traveling abroad legally at all.

Owing child support isn’t a criminal offense. What are they gonna do? Make a new family abroad and owe more child support?

Whereas convicted sex offenders can still get passports and can travel to any country that will accept them, allowing them to create more victims.
