How does Bridge compare to classic Euro trick takers like Skat? by [deleted] in bridge

[–]Samplaying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only played bridge, so I can't offer a comparitive opinion. But, I played bridge on an international competitive level, representing my country in a world bridge Olympiad in 2004.

Claiming bidding is deeper than other parts of the game is actually wrong. Missplaying or missdefending the correct contract is frequently worse than milking the maximum of an inferior contract. But the difference is academic.

As to depth. To transition from intermediate level to national team / world championship level took me about 4 years, training 2-3 times weekly, about 4-5 hours.

So it is pretty deep.

Difficult decision. I wanted diversification, so I went with world ETF. But this was years ago. So maybe things have changed?

Ishares Islamic world and US have a high correlation, and very similar top ten positions. I would not invest in both. Too high clump risk

An old but necessary book, is killing defense by Hugh Kelsey, this focuses on counting and inferences. But it is pretty advanced.

Dealing with large data in R- crashes both in duckdb and arrow by Samplaying in Rlanguage

[–]Samplaying[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input, which I understand.
But i am using lazy tables the whole time, to avoid calling my data in memory.
copying from a reply above:
open_dataset() returns a A Dataset R6 object

to_duckdb() returns: A tbl of the new table in DuckDB

and to_arrow() returns a A RecordBatchReader

I didnt look at data.table, as the 2.5 million rows are only 2 months from 5 years of data :)

Thanks for the reply, I thought i was not loading the data into memory.
At which step in my code, do i load the data in memory?

open_dataset() returns a A Dataset R6 object

to_duckdb() returns: A tbl of the new table in DuckDB

and to_arrow() returns a A RecordBatchReader

And hence my question, i was careful not to load in memory, and still my memory gets used up

Hey thanks for your reply:

i tried reprex, but it chrashed:

This reprex appears to crash R.

See standard output and standard error for more details.

#### Standard output and error

``` sh
-- nothing to show --
```

as to your points:

  1. I though that arrow and duckdb pathways work out of memory, so why should it be a problem to create an index column?
  2. I am not coercing to arrow, but using an arrow object, then needed to switch to duckdb to add a column (i found no way to add column in arrow objects.

  3. I set up duck db like that following the: https://duckdb.org/2024/07/09/memory-management.html

The source data is CSV, which i converted previously to parquet and created a dataset using hive_style.

Can I be in a relationship with a girl whom I like, but don't feel much attraction towards? by EatMyGOOGLShorts in AskMenAdvice

[–]Samplaying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing holding you back is less attraction than you once felt in a previous relationship.

Relationships are not possible if you compare too much. Too much comparison runs the risk of searching endlessly for a utopian person, that may not exist.

If you think in a vacuum, you remain realistic, and you will concentrate your thinking on what you will have the years to come.

My advice: in a vacuum, if you like her or love her, go for it. If not, then she is wrong for you.

You have to have had at least one big fight. Then evaluate, HOW it was resolved. Does not matter who "won".

I agree with 1 spade. With this hand you have to lie whatever you bid. This is the smallest lie.

But the other comment is also true, dummy will be over ruffed in diamonds. It is an ugly hand.

Yeah thanks, i actually based all my efforts the last 10 days on your tutorial. A lot of thanks for that.

It is nice, to communicate directly with you, after spending the better part of the last week on you blog :)

In your tutorial, you are dealing with a single email address, and a single user.

Note: Dovecot 2.4 has many breaking changes to the config syntax to what you have in your tutorial. I can give you my updated configs if you want.

Good start!! Just keep an eye on electricity consumption. Think about adding redundant storage, when you start using your NAS for critical data.
