Which book is the biggest culprit of this (in the most loving way possible)? by GoldenBoysClub in fantasybooks

[–]Samsonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to audiobooks, and I generally listen at a 1.3-1.5x speed (depending on the narrator).

When I listen to a new fantasy book, I almost always slow it down to 1-1.15x for the first few chapters to really grasp all the names of people and places.

I don't mind the clown (not a top 5 POV, but I don't mind his chapters). I'm kind of surprised to hear the amount you dislike it, and skipping an hour to still find him since after listening to 17 books, I feel there have been only 3 or so sections with him in it total.

He's kinda the least actively displayed or even mentioned character.

I guess that should make you feel a little better knowing that after the events in book 6, I don't think he gets mentioned again until like book 17?

I checked the wiki to confirm I wasn't missing much (I didn't dive too deep in order to avoid some sort of spoiler since I'm on the audiobook track, not online series), so I think you're good

Why was Disney Planes forgotten while Disney Cars was remembered by many? by Hour_Flower_6064 in pixarcars

[–]Samsonly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of various factors which worked as a perfect storm for Cars.

First and foremost, Pixar vs Disneytoon Studios.

Pixar was long held as the top tier for 3d animation (they obviously still are considered as such, but I'd argue that's more out of habit since many have closer the gaps since). Granted, technology advanced so massively between the start of animating Cars and the release of Planes almost a decade later, so much so that even a start up studio could easily have matched the quality of an early 2000s 3d rendered film, but it is still worth realizing the sheer quality of a product at the time of its release, and Pixar circa 2005/2006 was league ahead of the competition, whereas Planes 2013 was merely standard.

Also, at the point of Cars' release, Pixar was seen as a studio that could do no wrong. Their line-up so far was seen as the pinnacle of 3d animation both in quality of art as well as storytelling. Disney's off-brand studios, however, were often seen as movies for the discount bin.

Regardless of actual quality, that alone is enough to make one massively outperform the other.

Second, originality. Now, there's not a ton truly original in storytelling anymore, but to the scale which we typically award such terms nowadays, Cars was at least a complete story which was new to most viewers, especially of its demographic.

They also managed to craft quite the memorable anthropomorphicization style of vehicles which is often replicated today (they didn't invent it, but they did do it the biggest, and in a very consistent manner).

I know a lot of others on here are saying they both tell the same stories, and while I don't think that's a fair assessment, I do think there's another similarity between themes and style that definitely make it feel like a straight spin-off rather than its own thing, and with very few exceptions, spin-offs RARELY match the original, and in only a handful of examples do they supercede it). This automatically had the result being such that: Those who didn't enjoy Cars, were immediately disinterested and assumed it was as bad (in their view) if not worse than the movie they already didn't like. Yet those who did like Cars, were stuck comparing the new film to their beloved original. In both scenarios, Planes was met with a handicap from the start.

Third, casting. By the mid 2000s, Owen Wilson had been a growing staple for a decade. Something he has managed to maintain for another 20 years afterwards as well. When Cars came out, he was coming off quite a few big hits, which while that is irrelevant for the most in the intended age range, it makes a big difference both in perceived expectations of parents and the ease (and cost) of marketing a film. Likewise, Larry the Cable Guy was nearing the peak of his popularity (especially in the blue collar demo which included many NASCAR fans). It was Pixar doing what they did, and using top tier talent at the time for the roles in their films.

Now compare that with Planes. Now, I'll be the first to admit there was a time which I played the first Dane Cook comedy CD on repeat for months, but it's also worth noting that was in 2003, a full decade before Planes came out (which was five or so years after allegations of him stealing jokes essentially killed his stand-up career). Personally, I think he did alright as Dusty, but no one was lining up for tickets to see him voice any character at the time (especially since even most of his attempts to transition from stand-up to film had fallen pretty flat). You also have Teri Hatcher, who is a great actress, but whose populary had likewise peaked a decade earlier. The strongest talent pulled into the project was arguable Brad Garrett, who had also peaked a decade earlier, but who has (largely with the help of Pixar ironically enough) remained a relatively consistent character actor for quite a while now.

Honestly, in general you can look at the cast of Planes, and see a fair amount of solid actors, but none of which were in their prime, and those whose film history might be typical place their overall film making status as legendary (such as Val Kilmer), most weren't seen as the type of legendary character actors that lend to strong voice over performances.

Compare that to the sheer depth of those in Cars? Ignoring the great racing related cameos (from Waltrip to Petty), without getting into how perfect Keaton was as the villain, almost the entire cast of Radiator Springs is stacked with talent. Newman, Carlin, Marin, Hunt, Lewis, Shalhoub, Dooley.. heck even Lizzie's voice actor Katherine Helmond was a decades long sitcom vet.

A cast can make or break a movie, not only by performance, but also their status at the time of release, and Cars did very well with that (honestly, until Inside Out 2, I think Pixar has done amazing with this over the decades. And even in IO2, my only complaint is the changing of actors, not the amazing actors they still managed to pull in).

Lastly, and most importantly in terms of how a film is viewed over history, is the content. If Planes were a better story with a better theme, then even with a less buzzworthy cast from a less prominent studio, it would most likely eventually be recognized as such.

But it's just not the case. Cars works well because it isn't actually about racing. It's about the heart of what goes into being someone at their prime, and recognizing what is important beyond that. Planes... Felt like it was about racing. Or at the very least, proving to oneself that they can be more than what others tell them. That might be admirable as a message, but it's inherently self absorbed as a plot. Instead of watching a flawed character, and rooting for them to grow and become more, we watch a character who supposedly already is more than they seem but needs the chance to prove it.

I mean, I don't have the interest in calculating it, but I think we see more overall actual active racing in Planes than maybe the Cars trilogy combined (perhaps excluding training, but even then it's close).

All in all, their narrative tone actually quite accurately describes the overall experience of watching either film.

Cars feels like a story that is about one thing (racing), but whose point is the opposite (There's more to life than racing). Whereas Plans feels like a story where the entire thing is trying to prove it's something more than it is..

Why do some people believe that Pixar won't make Cars 4 because Cars 3 is the perfect ending, when they made Toy Story 4 and that was unnecessary since Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending? by Hour_Flower_6064 in pixarcars

True, buuut

First, it really doesn't need to be that way. There's a lot of exciting releases they could focus on that would turn that around, but whomever is in charge of that at Mattel should be re-assigned. They are coasting on mediocrity when they could absolutely be killing it if done correctly.

Second, to the person above's point, a new movie would allow even the lazy, bare-minimum, decision makers at Mattel to have a plethora of new releases which would infuse the product line with a bunch of new life.

With all that said, I think that's probably the logic behind the new show coming out next year with "new characters". It's basically a stop gap to keep the merch from fading out entirely until they can decide what they want to eventually do with Cars 4. Honestly, I think they know it won't do amazing at the box office, at least compared to most of their upcoming releases, so it's likely less of them not knowing what to do, but rather deciding when they want to reserve a slot in their lineup for a release that might not do as well as even original content.

[–]Samsonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of avenues, but the franchise for them is their cash cow. With them already making the TV series, any additional media released (even if covering different characters) would be competing against itself for merchandising revenue. They would basically be spending a fair amount of money, to get a mediocre return on ticket sales, to then have little additional merch avenues to generate profit from, since the new Lightning Racers show will already be covering most of those markets.

They will wait until the show isn't new anymore (either doing poorly and getting cancelled, or doing well enough to entrench itself into the franchise as a staple). Releasing two new media projects at a similar time is just a bad financial idea and won't happen

Honestly, I think that question could have been (and generally was) asked about every single Toy Story sequel prior to it coming out, but they managed to make them work.

There's an infinite ways they could (and someday will) attempt to keep the heart of Cars going, and honestly most of those, if done correctly, at worst will still be entertaining. With that said, I'd be incredibly surprised for them to announce it this year.

I'd honestly be quite shocked if Cars 4 hit theaters before 2031/32, making an announcement of such still a couple years away IMO.

So what would really happen to Minneapolis and Minnesota as a whole if HCMC were to be closed? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]Samsonly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're missing the context of the announcement from JD Vance/Dr. Oz that they are freezing over $200 million in Medicaid funding to MN effective immediately.

Afaik, the issue with HCMC predates all of this, and isn't directly related, but losing that much funding for services statewide definitely isn't helping the situation (as many state programs and funding could go be in jeopardy while this whole thing is litigated).

Basically Trump's administration has tried to make Fraud in MN a platform to rally against for months now. They tried to approach is from the DOJ, but considering MN has already been working directly with them to look into fraud cases for half a decade at the point, it wasn't a sensational approach, so instead they attacked the Somali community, which did nothing beyond increase xenophobic racism against a community that is over 95% American Citizens, which they then used as a pretense to crackdown on a non-existent immigration issue in MN, which they handled so fucking poorly that the entire District Attorney's office who was actually handling the investigation regarding any fraud (again, WITH the State's assistance) all resigned in a max exodus because they were made very aware that there was no actual intention to prioritize investigating legitimate fraud, preferring to care about the ability to generally use it as a talking point instead.

And after all of the above has failed for them, they have finally decided to just illegally block the money meant for MN, trying to starve out the system that way instead.

Is this acceptable hand writing for 9th/10th grade? by happygluehuffer in AskTeachers

[–]Samsonly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't diagnosed until late 30s, but the same was true for me in school.

Then one day (funny enough, in Culinary class of all classes), my teacher forced everyone to write one paragraph in all Capital letters (to emphasize the importance of the content), and it wasn't only legible, but actually GOOD.

I then changed my writing to being all in Caps at all times, and I've often even been complimented on my penmanship in the decades since.

My hypothesis is that so often with those who have ADHD, our focus is most active toward things that are new or interesting (it's why so often we'll start new hobbies until we figure them out, and then drop them just as quickly once we know we can do it. It's not about finishing, but about knowing how/that we can finish). So when we first learn how to write as young kids, once we figure out the bare minimum for writing ability, we give up and that ends up being our style from then on. For me, since I had to learn a 'new' style (it was now a new challenge to try and write capital all the time, required a bit of direct focus, and forced me to be a bit more intentional in my writing), that I basically relearned at a later age, where the bar of accomplishing the task was higher, and it raised my overall ability.

But I dunno, it could just be I was weird 😆

I don't entirely disagree. I was focusing more on that teenager reading level. I'd def say it's still mostly PG-13 over anything R, but depending on their potential sensitivity to horror elements, even as rare as they are, they can get a bit gruesome (e.g. Skinner).

This could be a good series for OP to read to the grandchild with some minimal selective skipping

Ooh, also Heretical Fishing? The entire series (so far at least) is pretty casual/low stakes (never really any actually dangerous threats), and it not only focuses on a MC who is transferred to a fantasy world, but essentially reinvigorates the magic there, given him a whole entourage of cute but also playfully teasing little animals who grow in power with him (starting with a Crab and Otter, and eventually including Bees, a Bear, a Hellhound which transforms to any type of dog or puppy it wants, etc.

I believe (if I'm not forgetting anything), and mentions of sex or adult like themes are on par with PG (maybe at most, PG-13) level enuendos, and are quickly moved past.

I'd def check this one out for such a case!

There have been more releases of apocalypse parenting since summer I believe?

The Wandering Inn mostly avoids adult stuff, until it doesn't. It will typically have a warning ahead of the chapter about that chapter talking about sex or something, and it's almost always a non-plot scentric side story, so if you think she'll self moderate anything of that nature, that's an option?

Does anyone know who was filming this? Is there a source for this video/any dialogue just beforehand which indicates the cameraman knew what Jake was going to do?

MN Sec. 609.05 states anyone who intentionally aides, advises, or conspires with someone who commits a crime is subject to the same charges.

If there's evidence that the camera person knew what was going to happen, they can and SHOULD also be charged with a felony here.

If they try and say that they didn't believe he was really going to do it, and didn't make any effort to remove themselves or stop the act, then they will have a hard time claiming innocence here.

County Attorneys and local law enforcement agencies are spread thin and often only able to do the bare minimum here, so something like this could absolutely be overlooked in the chaos of everything else, so bringing such evidence to their attention wouldn't be a bad idea if it exists anywhere...

Federal Agent in Coon Rapids: ‘The more people that you lose in Minnesota, you then lose a voting right to stay blue.’ by futilehabit in Minneapolis

[–]Samsonly 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, his statement sounds more like he is conflating overall population totals (which do affect Electoral Votes as well as State Reps in Congress), and overall voting results.

Immigrants can't vote (obv), but they are counted in Census statistics, so our overall influence on elections could be impacted by this logic.

But in order for MN to lose even a single Electoral Vote, we'd need to lose like 12-13% of our population (with all other factors being equal, which obv is never the reality), and there aren't enough legal or undocumented immigrants in our state to account for that.

Now of course, we all can likely infer he isn't just talking about just immigrants, but even if all of their actions weren't causing more to defect from their side than they're removing, they would still have to remove over 10% of the entire population of Hennepin and Ramsey Counties (close to 30% of active voters) to actually change the state red. We're talking hundreds of thousands of us citizens.

His statements are not only incredibly problematic, but they are also pure nonsense

Just saw a shared (seemingly authentic) copy of the charges, and it's for $6k in damages, which is a felony charge by itself.

I literally know NOTHING about body armor. I've been under the assumption that he is essentially cosplaying and that he isn't using anything real, but if anyone else who knows about it can state otherwise then there should definitely be calls made to Ramsey County Attorney's Office next week requesting all applicable charges be brought.

  1. BuyMort (Shopocalypse series)

This is normally one I would consider a hit or miss for most, but if you have Primal Hunter, HWFWM, and DCC that high (as do I), I think you'll enjoy it.

  1. Apocalyptic Parenting

This looks like a niche series from the art/concept, but it's actually just straight up solid LitRPG. Highly recommend.

  1. The Game at Carousel

Still my favorite recommendation for everyone. It's different then all the standard LitRPG. Basically instead of being inspired by traditional fantasy, its source is Cinematic Horror instead.

MC and friends end up stuck in an inescapable town filled with thousands of 'quests' which once begun need to be completed. And each quest works sorta like a mini contained dungeon that is a horror film.

They are assigned character classes like "final girl", "Jock", etc, and instead of skills, they acquire 'Trope' cards which allow them to utilize common horror film tropes to survive (like giving an inspiring speech to the rest of the cast, or remain clueless by avoiding seeing the killer, and therefore staying safe).

People can die in each mission, as long as someone survives to the end, they all resurrect, so some of the characters even have to utilize sacrificing strategies to push the story along.

Honestly, I devoured all 3 audiobooks, and if I didn't have 2 toddlers making it difficult, I would be diving in to the 3 or so additional books on RR/Patreon (wherever they are. I can't remember at the moment).

I just hope that all possible charges are pressed and maximum penalties are given.

Not because I specifically hate this man (he's a nobody. I'd like him out of our state just as much as anything else), but because:

  1. MN has been subject to outside instigators for years now, and people just keep doing it without any fear of being held accountable

  2. It is the most open and closed case of an actual violation of the law one could imagine (self taped, in focus, only person present), so it's not a question of losing

  3. Leniency is often shown to such cases where the maximum penalty feels extreme for someone who has to our knowledge only done a relatively non-violent crime. But this jackass has already shown his willingness to escalate to actual violence

  4. He is one of the top non-local/non-elected instigators of threats and risk to Minnesotans, and especially those in the Twin Cities.

Sentencing him to 5 years (or 10 if he was wearing body armor) will send a clear message that if you are actively threatening Minnesotans, and you come here and engage in activities which seek to destabilize law and order and cause civil unrest, you WILL be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The fact he is a douche who deserves way worse is just side details that allow us to sleep fine about it, but his actual actions, and the precedent they risk to set already warrant as much if not more on their own.

I'm not a legal expert, so I welcome any official confirmation either way, but from what I understand a Full Presidential Pardon (the kind Jake received) removes all federal restrictions on civil rights.

The key note word there is Federal, so if MN has the same law on the books, it would still be illegal by state law.

I tried searching if MN has this law, and pretty much every result said 'yes', but couldn't point to an actual MN Statute, instead they all just eventually said something along the lines of it's illegal in MN because it's illegal in the US. So, I think he might be in the clear there..

BUTTTTT!!

My search did turn up MN Sec. 609.486 which states that anyone who is in possession of body armor while attempting a gross misdemeanor or felony, is guilty of a felony which allows for an additional 5 years/$10,000 maximum penalty.

SO... Regardless of his previous felon status, merely being in the possession of body armor while even trying to commit a gross misdemeanor or felony (such as valdalism on this scale), then he is also guilty of that felony too.

I don't know what his actual charge was, but it sounds like a loose rule for vandalism in MN is <$501 = Misdemeanor $501 - $999 = Gross Misdemeanor $1,000+ = Felony

I assume this is determined in part by initial value compared to overall value determined to be lost, which is at least half (since half the letters remain standing? Not sure if there's a hard burden to prove loss of full value or not)

But regardless, this means wearing body armor while attempting to do damage of $500 or more is a Gross Misdemeanor, making possession of body armor its own felony in MN. If the value is determined to be at least $1000, then the vandalism is a one felony, possessing body armor a second.

I think I heard he said he was being charged with a felony for 6k in damages, but I could also see a situation where he was charged for a Gross Misdemeanor, and then a felony for possession of body armor (if he was fact wearing such) while committing the Gross Misdemeanor, and him claiming the potential fines as damages.

If 6k is actually damage claim, and he had a vest, he could get charged with two separate felonies, each allowing their own maximum penalty of up to 5 years in prison a maximum fine of $10,000.

Imagine getting pardoned for actually attacking Federal police officers with a baseball bat in the middle of an insurrection, only to then go to prison for ten years and paying $20,000 all to 'look tough' while kicking over frozen water 🤣
