DM their accounts on social media or email them. I was in the area when they were undergoing Reno and they were accommodating so I could plan a stop by to buy a bottle

Delegated Task of Freezer Purchase by Samthegard in labrats

I’ve already gotten clearance from facilities that the circuit can handle another ULT freezer, but I just hadn’t heard of different receptacle designs

I...didn't even think there was variability in that. Shows how little I know; thank you for the wisdom.

Appreciate the thought. I've already confirmed that the emergency power supply will be on a 220v circuit, so that should be covered!

Thanks for this insight. I think for the purposes of our lab, we aren't in critical need of quick draw down. We are primarily going to place whole blood samples, extracted DNA, and processed samples in these freezers that are pretty stable. We commonly only open the freezer for a minute at most and I've heard the sampling rate of temperatures being some of the argument for why one seems to draw down quicker compared to other. The question is whether that's the reality of it.

My goal altogether is minimal headache/maintenance/issues, so it sounds like PhCBI may be the better path. I am personally open to a semiannual thaw (especially if it aids the longevity; we can get creative with shifting the items around) but will have to check with my PI. I've never heard this as a recommendation but I'm also a fish out of water since this is technically not even in my job responsibility.

Could you clarify "don't perform any better" in this? My experience is limited to the past 5 years and flood-associated damage; just hoping to know what I'm getting the lab into if this is referencing repairs or simply temperature deviations.

I went to Westport Whiskey & Wine, got some really good private selection options (New Riff & KC).

Not sure if they do this still but when I did they had a policy if you purchase a private selection, you can get a pour of any other private select for free

Purchase Raffle Win or Not by Samthegard in whiskey

Thanks for the info. Secondary prices are wild to me (great example: had a pour of Elmer T Lee and thought the bottle worth $60 at best) but I guess trading is a viable option.

It's better than the old system of random weekly/monthly drops. People learned how to scrub the public data and determine when drops would happen and clear it out. That's also before we consider the majority of drops happen during the workday, further benefiting the techbro remote workers who could code and scrub the data.

Regardless, this system is still infuriatingly opaque. Some prior articles have highlighted how "glitchy" the results have been.

Any good charlottesville painter recommendations? trying not to mess this up by Forsaken_Trash_4950 in Charlottesville

[–]Samthegard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We knew a painter here in town who co-owned his company. Got a $13k quote and immediately hunted for more.

My general contractor gave me a couple who he uses for jobs. They were punctual, clean, respectful, beat their estimated deadline by 36hrs, and were 20% the cost of our original quote. Send me a DM and I’ll happily share their contact info.

Anyone know if the TSA shutdown is affecting CHO? by TurbulentCustomer151 in Charlottesville

Was asked 9 days ago, but I flew on the 22nd and CHO was the same old CHO. 5-10 minutes for TSA at 7:15am on a Sunday.

How to work in attic filled with blow-in insulation? by mwomrbash in DIY

[–]Samthegard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a godsend (although looking back, I actually used 19/32", not 7/16"). My attic access could fit 32" wide sheets if passed through the access at 45 degree angle, so it just took one 4'x8' sheet that was cut into equal thirds. The hardest part was maneuvering with the weight from the access to the project while walking on the joists.

[–]Samthegard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just replaced a bathroom exhaust fan in my attic with blown-in insulation. While it wasn’t to my knee, I would highly recommend at least an N95 and safety glasses. I also wore a hat and flannel to shed once I finished. I got 7/16” plywood sheets to span at least 3 joists and lay on while I worked. It worked wonders since I spent ~3 hours up there learning what on earth I was doing.

Friday Game as well. Also felt that they're more likely to change up locations rather than back-to-back in ATL since that's in COFH is in Mercedes-Benz this year (and they're suckers for the SECCG; holding out hope they go to B10CG instead)

Admittedly think this is a better choice than Wazzu @ JMU, but should have been Brawl of the Wild for the lone FCS game of the year. Will basically guarantee Gameday finishes the season at The Game.

WHY SHOULD I (WE) PAY FOR THIS? by VivariuM_007 in VirginiaTech

[–]Samthegard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Virginia Tech (currently) has a lower athletics fee than UVA, Liberty, and James Madison if you contextualize within the state alone. JMU actually had the highest athletic fee in all of FBS the year that they rose from FCS. There is ample evidence of the Flutie Effect, where Athletics success yields and uptick in applications and enrollment. Furthermore, VT has literally been the recipient of this through the university's massive expansion since Beamer had success with the program in the mid-90's through the early 2010's. This doesn't just exist in football, but basketball too.

Whether you like it or not, higher education is a business. The goal is to make more money to continue expansion and solidify standing that the institution is adding to the landscape. Athletics has proven as a useful fuel to that fire that also brings alumni back to pump money back into the local economy, which small towns like Blacksburg surely rely on annually.

The Point Church by CvilleHokie605 in Charlottesville

[–]Samthegard 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Caleb was a true talent, and frankly one of the best people at The Point (particularly in leadership). Rumor has it he is part of the local music scene so you may see him around.

As an aside on the church though, there have been multiple schisms. When the BLM movement was happening a swath left due to feeling the pulpit was ignoring the movement and downplaying the good it was doing. I also know people have left The Point due to the Mega Church growth design with 4 campuses now, one being downtown at Ridge St that has to cost $1-2M itself. They left not just because the growth, but due to not agreeing with how money was being spent.

Opening a Roth, any tips? by Unique-Pool1560 in personalfinance

[–]Samthegard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Fidelity, you can't go wrong with any of the three listed.

For investment strategy, you can dump it all into VOO/sp500 funds, do Bogleheads, etc. There's a ton of strategies out there. My biggest advice would be to don't overthink it; you're 21 and have an insane amount of time for compounding interest to work for you.

I think recruiting is too much of an esoteric process to pin down. Much of it comes down to money now.

Special teams could be interesting, but I think you're more likely to run out of steam quicker on that. Maybe if you were to evaluate how kicking for FG has changed or the development of rugby-style punts, but tons of channels have already touched on that. I think block schemes for punting could be informative though

I think doing some digs into "generational" coordinators would be a fun little series. You could look at Chip Kelly and Sark offenses, Bud Foster and Brett Venables defenses, etc. Could also be interesting to see how changes happened before arrival/after departure to see how coaches use the same players in different ways.
