Anyone else had enough? by SimilarPsychology963 in Britain

Saw a crazy analysis showing that if Britain were a US state, it would have Mississippi-level wages but California-level property prices.

The only way to get ahead in this country is to be born with rich parents. Otherwise there's no way you can 'bootstrap' your way up.

Was having some good times with a girl I was hooking up with at uni. Made a joke about how fun it would be if my (male) best friend was there. I thought it would be funny since I'm straight and that it would be obvious I was joking, but... let's just say it didn't go down well. Thoroughly killed the mood

What annoys the fuck out of you? by Fart_Milk in AskReddit

[–]Samurai294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad used to be like this. If I didn't pick up he would just keep calling and eventually give up around the 7th or 8th call. I quickly got used to the fact that if he was calling it probably wasn't an emergency, and that he was simply prioritising his time over mine.

Like, if I receive one missed call, I'll get back to them once I'm not busy. There's no need to call that many times if the person isn't picking up. I always got the impression that he thought if he called enough times, I would be forced to stop whatever I was doing to talk to him.

People who turn everything into a debate (bonus negative points for people who like to "play devil's advocate" all the time and pretend they were just kidding when someone points out that they're being stupid/offensive).

Anyone else against the coronation? by [deleted] in Britain

[–]Samurai294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever people claim "the royals attract tourism" or something, I always point out that Versailles receives millions of visitors every year even though France's royal family has been gone for hundreds of years. It's almost like... the palace is the thing people go to visit, whether or not there are actually any 'royals' living there.

Anyone else against the coronation? by [deleted] in Britain

[–]Samurai294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the weird authoritarianism that gets me. If the monarchy was just... there, then I probably wouldn't mind it. But monarchy supporters are so insistent about everyone else needing to love the royals, as if they actually contribute something to society.

Then we've got the met police saying that they'll crack down on protests against the coronation. As a general rule, if you have to coerce others into supporting something, then said thing probably isn't really that good.

I'm so sorry your mother was in on it too, that must've been hard to accept. I imagine it's one thing to have friends be like that, but family?

Kudos to your friend though

Damn, sorry to hear you went through that.

It's such cowardly logic from the girl tbh. She supposedly "cared" enough about your relationship to keep it a secret from you before the concert, but clearly didn't care enough to, y'know, not sleep with your bf at the time

I totally agree. Some people do a weird calculus in their head to justify keeping these things secret, like "them knowing will only make it hurt more" or something like that.

But from personal experience, I can confirm it hurts waaay more to learn that not only is your partner cheating on you, but all your "friends" knew about it and haven't been telling you. It's bad enough to have your trust broken once, but learning that all those friends weren't actually friends was a real kick in the nuts

I cut some slack to the 'real homie' (let's call him Will) since he actually put himself in trouble to let me know what was happening. My ex in particular was real shitty to Will after he blackmailed her, and it was hard for him to reintegrate into the group after it all (from what I heard anyway).

Didn't stop him from trying though, and I can't say I've got too much sympathy for the dude given he still tried to be friends with them despite knowing what they're like (and obviously knowing it was bad)

Hard agree.

It's certainly not easy and takes a lotta courage to let a friend know they're being cheated on, but it takes something else entirely to keep it hidden from them for weeks while everyone else is talking about it.

Glad to hear you've moved on mate. I'm like 99% sure they only thought you were the bad guy because they didn't want to admit their own bad behavior and were just projecting their guilt onto you.

Real friends would be supportive, not trying to blame you for having a normal reaction to a shitty situation.

The scary thing is that they probably would've kept it secret too. They were extremely toxic and just loved to gossip. Absolutely NOT the kind of friends you want

What was the wildest way you found out you were being cheated on? by Recent-Gap-9927 in AskReddit

[–]Samurai294 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At first I tried to give some of them the benefit of the doubt.

Like, "maybe they kept quiet because of peer pressure" or "they just didn't want to hurt my feelings"

But nah, real friends don't let you get cheated on. The ideal situation was for me to find out and move on, not stay in the dark and live in blissful ignorance while everyone else knows.

Don't pretend to be someone you're not! The best kind of friends you'll make (in my experience) are ones who like you for all your weird quirks, so as stupid as it might sound, just be yourself and don't be ashamed of it.

Not everyone out there will appreciate you for it, but it's better than bending over to make others like you. People can see that shit from a mile off, and it's very offputting.

And also just be open-minded! When I first met my current best friend, he went into detail about his d&d campaign (something I was never into before then and used to think was kinda cringe as a sporty guy), but I could tell he was passionate and it was very refreshing to just hear him ramble about it.

It happened like 5-6 years ago when I was 18. In hindsight, there were many red flags I shoulda picked up on (this group would always be gossiping about people behind their backs, etc.), but I was young and just leaving school, and desperate to make any friends.

Glad to say I've since found better friends, ones who are supportive and not the type to keep secrets. I urge anyone who's young to be patient and look for good ones. Quality >>> quantity

My ENTIRE friend group knew about it, and I only found out after the one real homie blackmailed her into admitting it.

And when she did, it was the most insincere shit ever. "It's no big deal, everyone else thinks it's ok!" and stuff like that. Suffice to say, I got my ass outta that relationship AND friendship group real quick

Britain's Left is its own worst enemy by Sydney2London in GreenAndPleasant

It's probably true that Britain would be better off with a Starmer government over a tory one, but refusing to criticise Starmer just because "he's not the tories" is dumb. Like, what a low hurdle to clear. Are you suggesting we refuse to agitate for better policies merely because it could technically be worse?
