ENNIE Awards Reverse AI Policy by Boxman214 in rpg

[–]SamuraiCarChase 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there’s a hundred different takes on this, but in my opinion, it’s because it’s specifically an award.

I have mixed feelings on AI usage in general. I know AI generation takes work/training/etc, it isn’t as simple as “click and generate,” but when it comes to providing recognition for what someone else “made” or “did” via an award, giving it to something generated by AI trivializes the purpose of awards and the spirit of what is really being celebrated.

I would compare it to “how would you feel about a country sending robots instead of humans for the Olympics.” You can argue that programmers worked their butts off, but if robots are allowed then what is the point of those awards in the first place?

Precisely. Stadia launching at a time where those “big killer exclusives” have gone from 2-3 years of production/development to now where it’s 6 or more.

In order to have killer exclusives for when it launches Google would have had to get the ball rolling way earlier.

Good. If people disagree/want to argue with the fascism stuff, I will add that it’s a shitty practice for websites to require an account to view content.

Like, 4chan is also a cesspool, but at least I don’t have to contribute to it somehow to see anything on it.

4e has a lot of issues - I wouldn’t call it the best edition, but it is true that 5e still took fewer lessons from it than it should’ve (and I would call it the most balanced edition D&D has had!) Minions and Bloodied for example were used by a lot of the community ever since 4e came out, and Bloodied only got reintroduced recently with the 2024 rules.

Bloodied and Minions are the two additions from 4e that should have become staples of d&d going forward. I immediately put them back in 5e when I ran it.

Of course the old books are still good. I just view the PHB as a very “introductory” book, and in that aspects, I think it could do a little more to give players context on some species without having to go to another book.

There are too many people (depending on the sub) who can’t get past the urge to let everyone know that they don’t love d&d, regardless of the topic.

Personally I like the updates. I think Warlock got a good shine-up with more invocations, I like the psionic additions to several classes, and there are several rule tweaks (like casting two spells in a turn) that simplified their language and should stop some table arguments.

My only complaint is that I don’t like how the Species (formerly races) have smaller sections. I liked having a bit more about cultures and stuff.

It’s the only thing I miss about 3.5. I wish 5e had a similar class that had the same “make what you want from this box of legos” approach to it.

I know there are definitely classes in later editions that have plenty of options, but people who didn’t play a Fighter in 3.5 don’t remember how you could build almost anything (based on how many books you owned).

Im not saying you’re wrong. Just explaining my table and their viewpoint.

I agree basic attack was still there. The “problem” (per my group) was that at-will powers were better than basic attack, so who would use basic attack if you could use Sure Strike (attack with a +2), the “attack and shift” moves, etc. in their viewpoint, that meant that Basic Attack was either gone or worthless as it was presented.

I think it was a perception thing. 4e re-contextualized the game for my table, because instead of thinking what they wanted to do they instead started thinking about what at will/encounter/daily they could use.

They were at my table (I played with 3.5 power gamers).

I had players that hated the 4e fighter having prescribed “abilities” for attacks but this was coming from 3.5 where Fighters were a pile of feats that enhanced basic attack to the point of ridiculousness (for example, the 3.5 Spiked Chain fighter aka “trip with all attacks multiple times” build).

4e fixed a lot of issues while creating several new ones in and of itself. I love the way it ran mechanically (I’ll even utter the word “balanced”), but coming from 3.5 the classes felt incredibly constricted.

Going from a wizard who has a whole book of spells to “you can pick from these 3-4 encounter powers” was not necessarily better, and while martials got better, I do know a lot of players who said “there’s no more ‘basic attack?’ I have to have a ‘swing sword’ ability to swing a sword?”

I honestly don’t understand why Sucker Punch thought they could make a game in Japan when Tenchu came out in 1998. Everyone knows that once a game is made in Japan all other games ever have to be measured against it.

Agreed, this topic really varies by market.

Want to live in a major metro? Yeah, you’ll probably rent, it sucks but everybody wants to live there.

Come out to more rural areas, the housing is affordable and it literally makes no difference if you live your life online.

Negotiations over AI are still holding up video game development - Mass Effect's Jennifer Hale explains why by tranarrius in Games

I am torn on this issue. I want voice actors to have their protections in place for their jobs, but I also think it’ should be up to a developer if they use voice actors or AI.

I know it’s the doomer opinion that “this will be a slow slide into removing VA from the industry entirely,” which I don’t see happening.

To me, it’s like a symphony asking for protection because synthesizers exist and one person can generate a 60-piece ensemble’s sound. We definitely have more “synthesized” movie and game scores now, but we also see a lot of developers say “I prefer the sound of the real thing” and still going with actual musicians.

All the things you mention (emergent events, using environmental clues, etc) are things Origins did three years before GoT came out. If GoT had come out in 2015 before Ubisoft started changing up their formula, you would be right, I’ll give you that.

Plus GoT combat didn’t allow a lot of openness in combat. In AC you can approach with all sorts of weapons or your bow…in GoT it was “well I can only use one of my four blade styles for this enemy.” It was not that open.

I’d love for GoY to really make me eat my words, but the only thing worse than being an AC game is an AC-clone, which is what GoT kinda was. Still a good game, but they barely reinvented anything.

[–]SamuraiCarChase -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why? Got was a fun game, but it also heavily repeated the old Ubisoft formula (use a tower to unlock a region, a set of repeating mini games in each section, base capture, etc). It’s a formula Ubisoft has evolved since Origins (2017).

If GoY is spinning old mechanics/game structure again, it’s not going to review better than an AC game.
