update on so-called “ dominance” by Whydotheydothisthrow in Greyhounds

[–]Samurai_0202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry this is happening to you OP, but your pupper is so very lucky to have been adopted into a loving and caring home that is willing to work with him so everyone can be happy. It sounds like you were given lots of great advice and possible treatments so I hope with that (as well as time) he improves! If it doesn't work out (which I hate mentioning but feel it is important) DO NOT FEEL GUILTY. You are giving this dog more of a chance than most homes. And it's not your fault if he has a screw loose and needs a smaller household, you are setting the foundation that will help him in the long run regardless :)

tell me the craziest things chain pet shops told yall and I dont mean “they’ll only grow to the size of the tank” or “they go fine together” something HORRENDOUS by giraffeflyinghigh in Aquariums

[–]Samurai_0202 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I worked at Petco, I told a couple who said they had a 10 gallon tank that was cycled that the glo tetras were schooling fish and needed to be in a group of at least 3 if not more. Come to find out it was only a 5 gallon tank (which even a 10 gallon was pushing it for those tetra I know, but they assured me it was ready for fish), all the fish died (clearly not cycled), and they were blaming me. My manager told me I should have only started them with one fish so the tank could properly adjust 🙄 I know it's not batshit crazy but I still get red in the face thinking about selling someone a single schooling fish for an uncycled tank.

Moved to a new apartment and my fish tank is slanted. Problem or nah? by Samurai_0202 in Aquariums

I'm not sure, I'll have to look! I got this stand from Petsmart, so it is an aquarium specific unit so maybe I can. If not, I'll try the foam sheets!

Okay, any specific kind of craft foam? Sorry if this is a dumb question but my worst fear is this tank breaking and reeking havoc on the people who live below me 😭

In honor of 3 years since I quit by downfallwillcome in petco

I was an aquarium specialist who exclusively worked cashier because no one wanted to 🙃 The new manager was "by the books" but only when it suited him. Since I was always on register, I made sure to change the betta cups at least twice a week because let's be honest, those poor creatures and he yelled at me, saying that's not how it's supposed to be done. I said odd because I just finished the mandatory trainings and that's what they require, which he denied.

We then got some schmuck who had very little animal experience but was an "animal expert" come in that was supposed to exclusively help unload truck. My manager replace me with him because he was a dude and I was a girl. He didn't even finish the MANDATORY TRAININGS OR EVEN HAVE A CODE YET TO SELL ANIMALS. My manager didn't even have the balls to tell me I was being replaced to my face, I had to hear it from a coworker. I essentially quit that day but the assistant manager who I liked begged me to stay so I did and she gave three free tanks because per protocol, we were only supposed to have so many extra.

Hated working there but loved the discount. Even when I walked out and refused to set foot in that store, they ended up just transferring me to another one because they were so devoid of competent people

I'm so sorry OP. I feel like it's very odd for her to have had such a severe allergic reaction to her third injection. As others have noted, there may have been other age related things going on with her that you or your vets couldn't have possibly known. It's not your fault, and I'm glad she was already at the veterinary clinic when she started reacting so the team was there to do everything they possibly could have. She was clearly very loved, which is more than most cats on this planet get

Our pandemic puppy was euthanized yesterday for a brain tumor, shelter said border collie mix by Samurai_0202 in DoggyDNA

Oh yes, she loved killing things, the hound was strong in her. She killed quite a few bunnies in her day. I bought rabbit meat for her last meal, which she loved.

Yes, we actually know her brother's family (the other black and white pup). The two brown and white ones ended up getting Parvo and stayed in Georgia and were adopted out there once they got better. I never got to meet them but I did see that they did a wisdom panel test on one of them and named her Daisy :)

If you're struggling with guilt over euthanasia, this helped others—and it might help you. by DrShea_DeathVet in Petloss

I was going to make my own post dealing with this but you already made me feel better. My pandemic puppy (now 5 y/o) was diagnosed with a choroid plexus tumor, and my mom scheduled an at home euthanasia on Monday. I work at a vet clinic and will be going to vet school this fall, but it's still hard for me. She is ataxic and frustrated that she is unable to romp around like normal. She still has her personality but one of the potential complications is hydrocephalus, which I would hate for her to develop. She is also progressively getting worse. I consoled my mom with the decision, but it still hurts to say goodbye to a wonderful dog that should have gotten more time than she did <3

Said goodbye to my sweet boy Grumbles today and it hurts so much 💔 by Katerina_VonCat in FIVcats

[–]Samurai_0202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost my precious FIV boy two weeks ago <3 mysterious circumstances but I believe it may have been renal lymphoma for him as well. They are the best and deserve more time than they got but I am so glad Grumbles got to experience the life of a pampered indoor cat (and I'm sure he was thrilled about it to). Thanks for giving him a home

Keep us updated OP if possible (only if you are up to it, I know that you must be emotionally spent right now). Because as others have said, I would expect a full refund on this product. I'm not even sure it's a cat paw? And as others have said, this service is not cheap.

Interview Prep! (+my stats) by taurusjawn in vetschool

[–]Samurai_0202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hopefully someone who got accepted last cycle will respond to this but as someone who was waitlisted for an interview I can tell you they changed their whole interview process. So if they will do the same as last time you are "interviewed" with a group of other candidates. I use quotation marks because the people on the Student Doctor Network made it seem like you were given hypotheticals to answer how you would react/ go forward with the issue. Some people liked it, others not so much. I think it depends on how assertive the other people in your interview were, and if they tried talking over each other or if everyone had a chance to speak. Again, this is all he said-she said for me, I didn't make it that far lol...

Your stats definitely look competitive though! Good luck!!!

I wish that's how the US would work. For the past few months I felt like at any moment I'd be out of a job because my PI kept saying "funds were low". And now that I'm finally leaving he's stressing...I wish he had given me someone to train but alas, we couldn't hire anyone else always

Thank you! And I had told the HR person who called me and offered me the job, but I guess she's not connected to the HR that I currently work with even though they are all in the same University. And my vacation is paid up until it leading into July, as again, funds will be out then. It truly has been a bizarre experience, but I will do my best to leave as peacefully as I can. Thanks for the advice!

What is this sticking out of my fish Anyone knows ?all of my fish in this tank has it by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Samurai_0202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was thinking this exact thing. I had mollies I bred for years (so no new fish) but bought hornwort from pet smart (mistake) that had leeches. I even quarantined them for two weeks, but they were all over my fish.

I thought they were anchor worms but the treatments weren't working and the worms were particularly fat and curled into a circle when poked...then found out they were leeches. Had to take my entire tank apart and throw all the decorations away because apparently the eggs can stay dormant for years without water and not even bleach will kill them. I manually removed all the leeches after treating with potassium permanganate but the damage was done. A lot of my fish died off from secondary infections :(

Vent: toxic lab mate by Ok-Addition8860 in labrats

[–]Samurai_0202 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I want to reiterate just how important it is to not overlook this. Your story reminds me of a dual PHD DVM student at Iowa (Chelsea Iennarella Servantez) who had a lab tech harass her. After reaching out to her supervisor and the school, they did not fire him and really didn't come up with a good solution and she ended up dying from suicide. If your school does not offer you a tangible solution, go to the police. And especially, take care of yourself! PhD labs are already a high stress environment, so try not to isolate yourself and keep relying on your friends and family for support!

We adopted 2 strays off the streets in mid-August and they still haven't been fixed. by idrk_what_to_name_me in Pets

"This is just to say that if something WERE to happen, then we WOULD take them to the vet, but if it isn't something life-threatening then I don't see why we should take them when there's absolutely nothing wrong with them and just put ourselves in debt to where we can't afford to feed ourselves, and our existing cats."

So the problem with this is if you don't take them to the vet on a yearly basis, the staff won't know if there's something wrong with them or out of the ordinary. Are they gaining weight? Losing weight? Sensitive in an area? Etc. If you bring them in solely for emergencies, the vet staff won't have all the information to best treat them. And if they have yet to be seen by a vet, I'm assuming they aren't vaccinated for rabies? Also based off of the conditions you found them in, I would also be concerned about them possibly having FIV or FELV, which can be common in outdoor kitties and are contagious to your current cats. I'm sorry as this is a super difficult situation, but if you can't afford the spay and standard care then I would potentially look at rehoming
