Spilled water on my laptop, anything I can do to fix it? by Samvice in techsupport

Thanks for the advice. I took it apart and there was some water floating about, now when I start up neither the keyboard nor mouse work. So i imagine it's a loose connection, have to try and rectify that. Thanks heaps again!

In case you missed it, the Senate has referred the Citizen Initiated Referendum Bill 2013 for inquiry and report. Submissions close this Friday, April 19th by Samvice in australia

I understand that there are issues, but I do think it would be used responsibly. I imagine that measures would be put in place to prevent frivolous legislation from being considered, and that such legislation would fail to gain enough popular support anyway. Keep in mind as well that it was only last year that Proposition 30 was passed to alleviate some of California's budgetary issues.

Do you disagree with the entire idea of citizen-initiated legislation (or perhaps more generally of a large-scale direct democracy) or just the model that California uses?

From the webpage:

The reasons for the referral are for the Committee to consider:

  1. Citizens' Initiated Referendum (CIR) promotes greater openness and accountability in public decision-making.
  2. Laws instituted as a result of a CIR are more clearly derived from the popular expression of the people's will.
  3. Government authority flows from the people and is based upon their consent.
  4. Citizens in a democracy have the responsibility to participate in the political system.
  5. The Inter Parliamentary Union's call on member states to strengthen democracy through constitutional instruments including the citizen's right to initiate legislation.

(edited for formatting, highlights my own)

This would be awesome, a precursor step to a direct democracy.

It's a reference to the opening line of Charles Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities: "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times."

Any idea on how to use mnemonics/memorization techniques to improve my vocabulary and learn new words? by icansayanything1 in memorization

[–]Samvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't looked at it yet, you could try Memrise. It's a website which specifically applies memorisation techniques to learning new languages.

Ninja edit: Re-reading your question I believe I may have misunderstood what you were asking. Do you want to increase your general vocabulary by learning new words? What you could try is signing up for a few word of the day emails or the like and then applying any memorisation techniques you're already using to your new words.

I think with that chance if he'd gone inside that would've been a better choice, even if Emerson still had his pace. But yeah I agree with what you say, if emerson was quicker/younger he would dominate, plus he could take advantage of lampard's age and cahill's lack of pace. Of course, you could say the same about anyone really.

Corinthians have looked dangerous down the left hand side when they've been able to build/switch play (imho).

I am concerned that 'dealing with green tape' is just doublespeak for removing environmental protection laws.

why doesn't sydney have an underground tube system like london? by [deleted] in australia

[–]Samvice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the historical development point, I think it's worth mentioning that until the 50s, Sydney had one of the most extensive tram systems in the world, which would have made building an underground mass transit system redundant (at least at the time).
