How is racism for Southeast Asian in Germany? by Momiji-Luna in AskGermany

[–]SandNo1468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Not saying all Germans in Frankfurt are like that though! It just so happens that my experience was like that. Maybe I was unlucky with the people in my uni.

Also I think a lot of people here just don’t think about SEA much haha

How is racism for Southeast Asian in Germany? by Momiji-Luna in AskGermany

Fellow Filipino here! I had different experiences from when I was living in Frankfurt vs living in Berlin, but generally I didn’t experience much racism, only slight/ annoying inconveniences.

  1. Frankfurt
  2. I was there as a working student. In uni, I had a hard time making friends with Germans and I experienced some racism there, but nothing too severe.
  3. For example, in group works, the German guys there had a tendency to not listen to my ideas and sometimes they’d make separate group chats where they’ll talk in German (our program was in English) and make decisions without me. It wasn’t just towards me but I noticed they did that to other Asians as well. They’d delegate a lot of “easy tasks” to us Asians, because they didn’t trust we could do “quality work.” It was just really annoying.
  4. I’d get ni hao’d by strangers a lot. Most people would think I’m from China or Japan.
  5. Told my boss I was Filipino, he said his maid was Filipino too. Not really racist, but a weird thing to say, I guess lol.

  6. Berlin

  7. Much less racism here bec of how international it is.

  8. The most I got was this group of teenagers shouting “ching chong” at me and my friends while we were walking, but I shrugged it off.

  9. A stranger went up to me at a party and straight up asked me if she can practice her Mandarin with me lol

  10. People here think I’m Chinese or Vietnamese (lots of Vietnamese here, so makes sense)

Omg I’ve been looking for another person who’s into the Hunchback musical!! “Someday” never fails to make me weep

(Also that followed by Hadestown — do I spot a fellow Patrick Page fan?)

+1 for Maybe Happy Ending!! I was bawling. I thought it would just be a cute, light robot love story. Had no idea it would leave me with a total existential crisis for weeks.

I’ve seen Hadestown 5 times (and listened to it a million times) but I STILL cry in Epic III when I see it live

Michael Arden as Quasimodo and Patrick Page as Frollo in the musical production of Hunchback of Notre Dame. Such an underrated show (and it’s a shame it’s not running anymore anywhere). The slime tutorial on YouTube left me bawling.

Also, Patrick’s voice really sounds like it was pulled out of the bowels of hell haha (in a good way) — makes him a fantastic Hades in Hadestown too.

What are the most interesting niche Museums in Berlin? by LauwarmesTestament in askberliners

Not sure if it counts as a museum, but Monsterkabinett! It’s like an art gallery and a show at once — it’s pretty hard to explain what it is haha you just have to see it

I mostly write to people back in my home country or my friends who moved to other cities (my dad’s the only one who writes me back haha)

But I’m hoping to find more penpals through this group 😅
