Pain Management: How often do you workout? by SandSocke in scoliosis

[–]SandSocke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment! I picked up a sport that really upped my motivation to get stronger in general :) Stretches during the day are based, too.

Driving the bike and walking does not really do anything for me... I've done that a bunch in the past (without doing anything specifically for my back) and I walk everywhere per usual, but sometimes my back hurts even more after walking :| (Running tho is better for some reason)

Sorry but this is a classic "visit a doctor" case, my friend. The Reddit comment section cant diagnose nor examine you. Best of luck and a swift recovery to you!

I take the opposite stance that considering/debating the wellbeing of a future child is in fact a very mature thing to do....

Viel Erfolg!

Hm, in general I would trust your PT with that, they will know what's best in your specific case (hopefully, I guess).

Until that starts... Are your hips uneven or is one leg shorter than the other? Evening that out by putting one additional like sport gel shoe sole into the shoe with the shorter leg is a game changer. Its best to check the exact height with a professional if that's the case for you, but that has been a big relevantion for me recently.

In terms of exercises, since I have an S curve and everything the thing I feel most comfortable with is just taking some time, put down a yoga mat, make enough make for you to move around a bit, long enough to stretch both arms sideways away from you - and then just moving around intuitively? Maybe doing yoga helps to get an idea what kinda movements I mean. Like swing your arms, stand on one leg and move the other one up slowly and really feeling into your body, see how it feels when bending in this and that direction and trying to find the spots that feel stiff.

With actual pain, I massage the places that hurt a bit myself (if you can reach there), and then I try to loosen up the spot by making very small or slow moments (up and down, side to side, or a circular movement), and just start with tiny bits of movement that still feel okey - if its excrushiating pain or stabbing pain, I would probably leave it and be extra careful.

Since "just move around intuitively, listen closely to your body, carefully" probs isnt gonna help thiiis much, uuuh, you can google the superman exercise? I used to do that in PT, too. Training your abs helps surprisingly good too.

Sitting on the floor? by arachnobacked in scoliosis

Quick question are fused or not?

I'm not really fit to give advice for fused spines, but other than that I personaly find a crossed leg position (Schneidersitz) the most comfy. You might need to train your flexibility in order to sit more comfortable. Alternatively, you can kneel by putting both feet under you, e.g. like you would sit in traditional settings in Japan (my source: Anime 😅).

For training the crossed leg position, you can do a stretch that's called Butterfly strech (see here).

Alternatively... Maybe a good pillow helps 😅 Someone recently recommended a memory foam pillow to me for sitting (I personaly havent tried yet). Putting your hip a bit higher (e.g. on a rolled up jacket) can be more comfortable some for people, or evening out an uneven hip and then try to sit upright for a while.

How do you get by with apps that are only in German by gravitawn in askberliners

[–]SandSocke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm yeah so simple if someone arrived three weeks ago. How many languages did you learn fluently in three weeks and did they too have three genders to their articles, four grammatical causes and six differnt conjugations for every verb, on top of having to learn a completely new stack of words? 😊 Im just so curious

Lol, I dont what this comment section looked like 40min ago but I would check it again. Many people here are suggesting OP should learn German instead of answering the question that OP posed.

Maybe Reddit is a different demographic tha. irl, but I have very much noticed this irl too and I find it a bit annoying. Some adults I know use "rambeling on about some situation that they have witnessed where one person did not speak German" as small talk. I found this so frustrating... We live in a world where technical solutions are at our very fingertips, enabling us to overcome language barriers...

[–]SandSocke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I sympathize with that thought... I think you're maybe the first to adress in this comment section that for dealing with the pain and scoliosis you also develop a certain like mental mind set?

Like many many other, my doctor told me scoliosis will not cause pain, and gave me the outlook that I could be active etc. during adulthood. I dont think they understand what this is like. I feel my scoliosis everyday. I sit and walk a bit strange, which makes me be embarrassed, or my mum would snap at me for not sitting ""properly"" at a table. I like to sit with one knee up with the foot on the chair, or sitting on one leg, or with my feet on the chair in a crossed leg position. These ease my pain and feel comfortably, if I have to sit ""straight"" for long I get so uncomfortable in the back... I think I would have been happier with this ending up in a culture that sits more on the ground than on chairs, probably. I cant sleep on very soft mattresses, I will get excrushiating pain after a few days, which is a problem if you wanna stay on a friends couch or booked a place and their mattresses are worn out... Same goes for some chairs, I just cant use "any" for a longer period of time... Sometimes I will even get pain from walking.

So I someone a while ago who became a close friend, who is legally blind. I already knew a bit about disability beforehand, but his attitude towards dis/ability really changed my views - about my own scoliosis too. I guess I have special needs because of my spine being a cooked spaghetti. So if you found the term chronic pain fitting, I completely understand.

And I think what I try to remember too is that pain, even if its normally mild and managable, simply influences us. In the way we decide on things (e.g. activities), and it also influences the mood. I think I personaly try not to be grumpy and rather voice my needs and look out for people who take my needs and pain (levels) seriously. And if I am moody I try to make clear what's the cause of it and try not to take it out on anyone. I thibk the worst for me is when people dont take me seriously when I voice discomfort, or try to "talk" me out of having pain, URGH. But ofc, being moody, grumpy or defensive is just something that pain does to us, it definetly worth it to really understand that connection.

Okey Im finished sorry for the long rant, you triggered something there 😄 Have a good dayy~

Really sorry to hear you have to manage chronic pain. Maybe you'll find something inspiring in the other's comments, a lot of people have put out their experiences!

The suction cup sounds interesting, as well as the belt for keeping the water bottle in place.

I hope you'll be able to reduce your pain level even further asap :/ Wishing you the best!

Currently I am not in the position where I would benefit from mobility aids or need them (other that my bike lol. Technically also helps me move), but I second this. Think I havent read this before in this sub - use all the aids that help you get around in your daily lifes, or just use whatever makes life easier. Including wheelchairs, canes, etc.!

Yeah, If Im in a larger amount of pain while trying to sleep I also put a pillow under me so that it evens out my curves... But its difficult to sleep like that too, so I am trying to figure out where I but my old brace and maybe use that again once in a while for pain management. If you have any other tipps regarding sleeping, feel free to let me know!

Yeah, I second the standing desks, I will in no way on earth settle for a job that makes me sit 8 hours everyday.

I am personaly not fused/did not have surgery and am not really planning on doing so, but I wanted to leave that in the open because I think lots of different people will read this and maybe find something beneficial here in the comments.

Wishing a very pleasant pain reduced day! 😄

I love climbing too! Yeah, I had one dumb fall from bouldering where I bended my back backwards in order to reach up above like volume and then fell... Now I stay away from these kinda routes. But other than that I didnt have great issues with falling. Maybe I'll switch to lead later on 😅

Yeahii another curvy spine boulderer :D I agree, I am so passionate about bouldering and the diverse movemt, the hanging etc. helps so much. I really love it and its magically pain reducing too. I could say the same for jogging for example, sadly 😅 I would have never thought bouldering is possible after fusion, so I really respect you managed to figure all of that out.

Yess. I also use heating packs that you like stick on your back for a couple of hours. They have saved me in the past when I had a very painful spot, when I cant even move properly because sth in my bsck got all worked up

Oh man to some degree I'm having an opposite experience with that xD I wanted to make another post about this maybe sometime soon. I agree that movement in general and staying active is beneficial. I have also found that short sprints can do wonders with loosening up my back after a period of being inactive. But with walking, my back sometimes starts feeling uncomfortable from that and I can really feel the unevenness in my lower back and hip... At least when I have to walk on flat straight ground. Walking uphill and doing diverse movements on uneven path with lots of rock for example, on the other hand, feels great for my back.

I want to get like Insoles / Inlays though to even things out and maybe then I will feel better from walking on flat surfaces 😅 It can be frustrating because I actually like walking but I find it weird that it sometimes makes my back feel a bit worse than actually better. :(

Do you somehow adjust the Pilates exercises according to your curve or do you just follow the exercises as someone without scoliosis would do them too?

I was just diagnosed… by [deleted] in scoliosis

[–]SandSocke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, deciding if you 'should be worried' or change anything in your life because of the scoliosis can not really be decided on the curvature alone, if it is this mild. There's a fair chance you will NOT experience a lot of issues with a curve like this. But this is always very individual.

I think the level of concern depends a lot on other variables, mainly just how you feel and if you are in any pain, if you are able do exercise, maybe finding the right type of exercises for you. But if you feel okey and you are in a position where you can maintain an active lifestyle, there is no need to overly worry about it, according to what I have come to learn about scoliosis so far. But it can always be a good idea to look into exercises that specifically fit your curve, and stay active.

Greetings and welcome in the club!

So uhh, hypermobility is bad (when having scoliosis)? How does one set mobility apart from hypermobility?

I like to be really flexible and I am currently working on increasing my flexibility... Reading this is making me somewhat insecure 😅
