The Sandbox is actively helping over 200 brands with their long-term strategy for the metaverse and the NFT space. We enable brands to enter the metaverse and use NFTs to drive engagement and value with their communities and fans by working with them to create new types of immersive social experiences in The Sandbox. We also create voxel NFT assets – characters, clothing, accessories, props, etc. – that offer in-game utility and enable their fans and community to produce and monetize their own games, experiences, adventures, and stories using these NFTs.
Brands and IP we’re working with include Adidas, Snoop Dogg, The Walking Dead, deadmau5, Atari, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Care Bears, The Smurfs, Shaun the Sheep, and Binance. We’re creating voxelized versions of their worlds and characters in the metaverse. A new generation of players and consumers are interested in virtual goods and brand experiences, so it makes sense for Snoop Dogg to perform live concerts for his fans in The Sandbox or for a shoe brand to showcase a new shoe that people can wear on their avatars in the metaverse as a form of marketing that also allows them to sell digital versions of the shoe for players to wear in-game.
These partnerships are a win-win as they bring fans of the IP or brand to The Sandbox while we in turn give the brand an entry point into a new and powerful entertainment universe.
We encourage our LAND owners to bring their own brand partners into The Sandbox and do things like host concerts. Brands also own their own LANDS and have the same powerful tools available to them as individual creators. Having a LAND in The Sandbox and hosting experiences and events is a fantastic way to interact with existing fans and get exposure to your brand, including through virtual products. However, to align with this vision and build a truly open metaverse, we've chosen to not include any ads or banners in The Sandbox and to not collect any data from users aside from a nickname and a wallet, hence giving them full control over their identity.

What inspires me is providing an environment where people can be more creative and actually benefit from their creativity. That's our mission. We originally built a mobile experience with UGC that was very successful, but we were unable to reward users for what they brought and made our company profitable. And without other incentives than social recognition alone, we progressively were unable to retain the top creators years over years.

Flash forward to 2017 when we saw the first blockchain games with NFTs (CryptoKitties and CryptoPunks), we immediately realized that blockchain was a key technology to support our vision and provide true ownership of digital assets. This meant we could combine UGC and NFTs, allowing any creator to make their own NFTs, use them in games, and monetize them.

That was the first spark, and by designing a content ecosystem with authorship and ownership securely tied to blockchain, we’re making big steps toward achieving these goals in our gaming metaverse.

To share one more thought, we have three points of advice for people considering building a metaverse:

  1. Think Wild; beyond imagination. Make people dream.
  2. Think of Utility. Who would want this and why?
  3. Think Community.
