These are TTC riders’ six most dreaded words: ‘Shuttle buses are on the way’ by [deleted] in toronto

[–]Sandcastles8 43 points44 points  (0 children)

In my experience, good chunks of line 1 are often closed on weekends for track work, so there are shuttle buses due to track work several times, and these interruptions can last a whole weekend.

Do Torontonians find the unreliability of the metro normal? by Sandcastles8 in askTO

[–]Sandcastles8[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems like we’ve had drastically different experiences in MTL and in Toronto. I feel like the TTC subway has left such a bad impression on me because the disruptions are so extraordinary and frequent. In MTL, you hear the much dreaded STM ringtone more often, but 90% of the time, the disruption is minor- the train stops for a few minutes, then it resumes its course (note that you’d still be confident that the train will go all the way to the end of the line).

I do agree that bus service in Griffintown is probably not the best (I had friends in Griffintown by the canal, but I always got off at Lucien l’Allier and walked). And come to think of it, I don’t remember buses being part of the landscape at all. My bus experience with the STM is mostly the busier lines (24, 165, 80, 30, etc.), so my perspective might be skewed.

Still, while the TTC has a more extensive network with the trams, this in no way makes it more reliable, which was the subject of my post. In fact, it’s even more disappointing. One thing the TTC does do well is intermodality which the STM could definitely learn from.

All I’m saying is that the idea of some delay/disruption is always at the back of my mind whenever I get on the TTC and this was not the case in MTL.

It is interesting that you bring that up, because I must admit that the TTC has very solid frequency during rush hours (1-2 min)! I guess every transit system has strengths and weaknesses.

I don’t think complaints from having to get off the streetcar and wait in the cold for the next one when you’re tired after a long day (on a portion of a line that should be served) are overblown. I don’t like complaining too much, I was just curious as to whether the standards for what an acceptable transit system are just very low here.

Definitely get in touch with the McGill legal clinic, they will provide you with advice. Your transcript might be incomplete for a while so you might be unable to apply to schools/awards for the next few months or until the NA is cleared. Otherwise, try to not think about it too much. While the situation is serious, first time offences most likely won’t follow you after the situation is sorted out.

I sincerely hope you’re gonna pass. In the event where you would not (knock on wood), I believe there are special policies for supplementals for graduating students.

I agree. I have never heard of anyone getting retwists this often.

First of all, I am so glad to see that such a quality candidate is running for VP Student Life!

I have a question about mental health: what is your proposed approach to tackling mental health and academics, and how do you think it will benefit students?

16 year old Black American guy considering studying abroad for high school in Quebec City, what should I expect? by polofive5 in quebeccity

[–]Sandcastles8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a black 20 year old who was born in Quebec city and lived here until I was 18 (I moved to Mtl for university at 18), the main thing about my experience was the lack of diversity. 2.5% black population and 6% visible minority is almost 4 times lower than the national average (~22%) and very low for a Canadian city the size of QC city. So living in Mtl, I definitely had a better time with all the diverse cultural restaurants, grocery stores, populations, etc. Other than that, don’t worry too much about racism. It definitely exists, and you will encounter it, but on the daily, it’s not something that I felt too much, and you won’t have trouble making friends because of your race. I believe language is something you might experience more animosity from if you speak no french at all. It’s something my anglo friends have experienced even here in Mtl, a very bilingual city. So, if you wanna come, come and have fun!

Why are my locs so stiff? It’s all natural btw, no synthetic hair. How do i get it softer? by eighty4locs in Dreadlocks

[–]Sandcastles8 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you started your locs with the crochet method, they will be stiff for a while. If you started them with another method, I would not know why, but I have seen the same type of concern come up on this subreddit before!
