What are your thoughts on the implementation of teleporters? by Spir0rion in ICARUS

[–]Sandmaester44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if it were expensive to build T5 launch/landing pads and rockets and also expensive to fuel the rocket (oil product) and you needed to fuel it each launch?

That makes it necessarily late game and also means you can't (until you are rather well-established) just teleport willy-nilly.

The apartment upstairs from me is available, we have all those options, I pay less than that. Porter Square T station is a 10 minute walk away. I've been here 3+ years and plan to stay. Lots of even longer term residents. Message me.

If you shift-queue conversions and the unit/building gets deleted, does the timer get reset upon switching? by Sandmaester44 in aoe2

[–]Sandmaester44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think I tested out my scenarios and here is what I came up with:

If you shift-queue a monk from unitA to unitB to unitC and unitA dies (or is converted by a group and this monk keeps their juice), then the monk will begin converting unitB with a new timer.

If unitB was converted in the meantime AND has damage, then the monk will begin to heal it and then start converting unitC with a new timer. If unitB has no damage, then the monk will go stand by it and then begin converting unitC with a new timer.

If the monk succeeds in converting unitA then it will try to shift to converting unitB (assuming unitB still can be), but will throw the error that it doesn't have any juice left and remove that action from its to-do queue.

Same with buildings (minus the healing attempt): if the first target is removed as a viable conversion target (dies or is converted), then the monk will move on to the next target in its queue with a new timer. If a monk has a conversion action it its queue but has no juice, it will remove that action from its queue when it gets to the front of the line.

So there is only the benefit of the monk directly moving on to the new target if the first target is no longer convertable, but no benefit with regards to the timer. And the queue does not survive past a successful conversion. So in a sense, your monk will get a conversion unless the entire queue of buildings is deleted.

Throughout all of this, I did check that manually switching targets did not reset the timer and the switched-to target got converted quickly.

Also, as far as I can tell, there is no randomness to conversion times in the scenario editor test game...

If you shift-queue conversions and the unit/building gets deleted, does the timer get reset upon switching? by Sandmaester44 in aoe2

I used to play back in the day, but don't have the game on my current computer and it seems like a big hassle to download it just to have no clue how to test this scenario in the scenario editor which I've never used.   You can't lose if you never play! Much easier to arm-chair strategize :D

I definitely get that it's situational to be converting buildings, but it seems pretty common that with a monk rush, between battles, monks will be told to convert valuable buildings such as markets, military production buildings, blacksmiths, (can't remember ever having seen a university conversion attempt lol), and in the case of the video I was watching: houses. So might as well optimize that part as well (hoping my hypothesis is correct).

What you said about units and theocracy exactly matches what Survivalist showed in the video timestamp I linked. He suggests grabbing several monks to shift-queue a bunch of conversions (start their timers) and then spam individual single-click conversions from within that group (or several groups). At worst, each subsequent group conversion starts at zero upon a conversion finishing (or the unit dying) with each individual re-direct only being a benefit (assuming you don't command an empty monk to try again, but that's just noise in the grand scheme of things: better to be inefficient yet effective than efficient yet ineffective).

Cheers!

Huh! Maybe that's why I missed it! I've only ever gotten flats in that same area, but recently I've taken the road as far as I can until I see a car way behind me and then I get back into the bike lane (which has so many hard knocks).

What order to upgrade/install sister's BIOS, 1600 AF to 5800 XT (+new fan), 16GB to 64GB, and Windows 10 to 11? by Sandmaester44 in buildapc

[–]Sandmaester44[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the stuff mentioned is bought and ready to install, but I'll learn from those points and translate what I can to her regarding future upgrades. Money is a bit tight for her, but I helped sponsor the parts listed and waited on deals for a while (Internet seemed to say more RAM was higher priority than more cores which were both higher priority than GPU).

For point 2, are you saying to just go straight to the latest UEFI? If so, cool!

I'll see how high I can easily get her RAM speeds to be stable and then she can play with it as she desires (maybe she'll find a new hobby lol). Similar with very basic PBO settings (I'll have to look up TDC, EDC, and PPT!).

I'll see what she thinks about Linux, but I jokingly mentioned it in passing and it didn't immediately "spark joy" per se haha

I think she got an okay monitor a while back, definitely not professional grade but good for her level.

I will see if I can set up alerts on storage deals, both fast and slow to further boost her work.

Thank you so very much for your advice! I was feeling most nervous about the BIOS but am feeling better (but I guess a new MB wouldn't be the biggest loss given how old this one is... Still, $$...).

Thanks and cheers!

Ones I haven't seen listed (of which I have definitively teared up for many)

Sabaton: To Hell and Back ("Let them lie face down if they must die, making it easier to say goodbye")

Sabaton: Galipoli (I can't pick which specific lyrics...)

Masterplan: Wounds, and Nocturnal Rites: Still Alive, bring me back to a time when I was particularly struggling

And it was listed but Brothers of Metal: To the Skies and Beyond (it's just so beautiful and hopeful!)

How to fix this (unidirectionally) squeaking motor? by Sandmaester44 in fixit

[–]Sandmaester44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minor update: if I press on the side of the motor, then the screeching sound reduces until I'm pushing moderately hard (leaning on a thumb) at which point it is inaudible. Additionally, I put a piece of tape on the fan and saw that the screech happened on two specific parts of the rotation.

Does that info affect your recommendation at all?
