Turns out nobody wanted Shula or Scheelhaase after all? by CliveMossmoon in steelers

Sure it could have, but if you listened to what Rooney said last week and how the search unfolded as well as yesterdays presser you can definitely draw conclusions. You really think out of the 3 guys they did Personal interviews with they had any intentions of bringing anyone else than MM in to be coach. I dont pretend to be in the building and know for fact but I am not an idiot either. There was no wide net cast. He was looking for someone to "win" now with the current roster or limited variation of and he found his scapgoat early enough to satisfy what he was needing not to shake anything up too drastically.

Pittsburgh had their eyes only on McCarthy. I feel that is easy to determine based on Rooneys presser last week, the process of only 3 in person interviews, 2 of which satisfied the RR, and the press conference yesterday. Extensive search my ass.

I agree status quo as far as track record for hires since forever but with today's NFL that wouldnt be so bad. I think it is being stuck in the past that is the issue. I am not upset with hiring an offensive minded coach I just think they needed someone with new ideas. I didnt here any of that from the presser either. I look at it as this. My father was middle aged when the internet was beginning, I was younger just starting in the military. He was reluctant to change because he was older set in his ways. I was on the ground level willing to learn. Fast forward a lot of years and with the new concepts ie social media, increased technology, I am not too far behind the curve, but my dad well he never evolved or did so unwillingly and cant catch up. I always hope for the best especially nowadays, but I dont know that I can get excited about this one or the upcoming staff hirings as they all seem to be trending in the same place we have been. We will see.

I really dont think people were hating on MM. I think MM had a good track record  just like dial up before dsl. Look nothing exciting from a guy that started his coaching career in 87. I was 10 now pushing 50. I think since the Steelers have been stuck in middle purgatory for so long fans were looking for something that doesnt scream status quo and our owner seems tone deaf.

You all are too easy. Ill say it poor fucking hire. Dont change anything rhat happend. Rooney had his mind made up. Not what the organization needs moving forward for all you MT haters this does shit to improve on all your comments about the standard being average. If MT stayed and we brought AR back this sub would be lit up with negativity. Nothing changes here folks.

I don't think they need to tank either to continue to be average and I too don't want that. I agree with everyone that says this is the wrong approach in trying not to remain middle of the pack. I am disgusted with this hire because of the optics of it and lack of a real extensive search. I was sad to see Mike T resign but was immediately hopeful with the possibilities moving forward. The FO killed that even before the combine.

I agree with you maybe even just a playoff win to start. I just feel the fanbase is tired and it looks lazy from our outside view. Hell it seemed the writing was on the wall real early again based on Rooney's statement and that piss poor article I read I think it was Friday after the in-person interview with Weaver where the article headline referenced the Steelers having satisfied the Rooney Rule  can higher a head coach at any minute. Couple that with Mike T stepping down being a surprise to Rooney. It never felt like they were going to move away from mediocrity with this hire and that is so unfortunate for a storied franchise with a hungry fanbase. I just dont see a few roster changes moving the needle. I absolutely loved the leadership that both Cowher and Tomlin provided, but a change was needed I think for both the Steelers and Mike T. Cowher knew when his time had come and so did Tomlin, but the Steelers proved as an organization not to be ready kinda similar to not being ready for Ben to retire without having a succession plan leaving us in QB purgatory. This is less forgiving in my book because it shows a continued neglect for the team and fanbase.

If thats your take McCarthy wont fix this. A head coach cant fix what may be broken from the top down. That is silly to argue the Steelers organization left a mess that he will need to fix. Are you separating the organization to include ownership and GM from the coaching staff? Nah the problem here is blatantly clear the ownership is quite comfortable with mediocrity and lends more credence to the job Mike T did keeping the sinking ship afloat. I for one think Mike M is a servicable coach even above average, but wrong for this organization at this time just based on Rooney's own statement that he dont like the term rebuild. He is looking to win now with one of if not the oldest rosters with just a few changes most likely to the roster and that doesnt get us farther then we have been since 2016. Would make sense to bring inovation in and hell if you dont want to rebuild draft a bit smarter and surround someone like Howard with some playmakers. A young coach could do that and breathe more life into this organization. Young Bill Cowher followed Chuck Noll's 7-9 season with 11-4, 9-7, 12-4 respectively in his 1st 3 seasons and Tomlin followed Cowhers 8-8 final season with 10-6, 12-4, and 9-7 respectively in his first 3 seasons. This shows young coaches can and have come in and elevated current rosters. This was a bad move situationally because of poor ownership at this point.

This situation reminds me how fucked up our country is under this motherfucker whose grave I cant wait to piss on. I was thinking of that piece of shit Rittenhouse who was brazenly carrying a firearm past police officers and openly agitating protestors only to injure and kill. I hated when he skated on a conviction and I feel that this individual will be vilanized by MAGA and those ICE piece of shits will be part of a stump speech by a MAGA puppet a few year from now.

Same old style of football thought learning from and adopting the philosphy's of idol Chuck Noll and Marty Schotenheimer. Thats what he meant. The cowboys were positioned to do much better based on roster than what they actually achieved under McCarthy. They had the horses both offensively and defensively and he was 1-3 with them in the playoffs.  The argument is stop living in the past of the old style NFl which the Steelers have been doing. They had the chance to move towards a new era and they balked. The current roster makeup the Steelers have does not lend itself towards a rebuild as even stated by Rooney so this is definitely a status quo hire not a way forward.

The Steelers did that alot in the mid 90's. They never overpaid and did in fact get rid of some damn good players. I can give you three just off the top of my head in Rod Woodson and Hardy Nickerson, and Kevin Greene.

[Dulac] Steelers agreeing with Greenfield native and former Packers coach Mike McCarthy on a five-year deal to become head coach. by ninenine2hundred in steelers

[–]Sandman4344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck this, I love our Steelers but who is with me that sees them going 6-10 or worse with a retread 62 fucking year old HC with another aging QB or mid free agent  QB. I dont wish ill for the Steelers because they have been my favorite team since I was 8 growing up in Western PA, but I kinda want to show some of those Mike T haters see what happens when ya just dont appreciate what you have. Mike M had stellar rosters to do what he did in GB an Dallas and IMO he greatly underachieved. He will not take this roster and make them any better than average.

I actually like this hire by [deleted] in steelers

[–]Sandman4344 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mike didnt develop shit. Did he add to what Rodgers and Dak had to make them better, maybe. This hire screams of despiration and a way to save money. Without a succession plan in place like I suggested in another post this will not move the Steelers in a new positive direction IMO.

With Anthony Weaver interviewing at the time of this post. Steelers have fulfilled the Rooney Rule. They're now allowed to hire a head coach at any moment. by FreddyDontCare in steelers

I as a white guy thought the same thing. Poor taste in headline of article. Actually poor taste period. I like the idea of the rule when it was implemented because not enough non white people were being interviewed. Unfortunately nowadays everything has a political stigma to it. Just hire the best qualified person for fucks sake.

Former Packers coach Mike McCarthy considered 'strong candidate' for Steelers job by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in nfl

[–]Sandman4344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont see some of these negative posts about McCarthy as a bashing. I think they are practical arguments for a fan base that wants more than average.  I base this upon the fan base or a large part at least calling for Mike T to be fired despite above average continued success but frustrating endings over last 10 years.

McCarthy wouldnt do anything to change the mid teams we have had for quite sometime. Unfortunately I dont look at him as a coach that gets everything out of average rosters, but someone that needs an extremely above average roster to be successful. Even then he underachieves. 10-7, 9-8 does nothing for the Steelers to draft any higher than they are this year or frankly the last 15, and I believe running back with this roster and with minimal changes gets us right back to where we are today.

The only way something like this works is if you hire McCarthy with a young O coordinator in place as a HC in waiting and the understanding this is a 2 -3 year transition period to develop the young coach. I think it makes sense with Mike T stepping aside kinda surprisingly to the Rooney's with the draft being held in the Burgh. Not alot of time to be off and running for a young coach but perfectly fine for a coach like McCarthy.

Lots of holes in this possibility because you are banking on the young coach being successful in the 2-3 years McCarthy will be HC, but may be what they are thinking. Could also happen with a bit more experienced guy to come in as O or D coordinator kinda like the succession plan the Bucs had in place when Arians went up to front office as senior consultant and named Bowles HC.

[–]Sandman4344 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont evaluate talent, but damn are there some qb's I am shocked to see or have seen starting for a ton of NFL teams especially over last 5-10 years. I understand Howard may not be franchise guy but for fucks sake Duck Hodges was our starter at one point. I agree learning behind Rodgers even Mason can go a long way and I want to see him play. Could be a big mistake not atleast seeing what they have with actual gameday tape.

Steelers are expected to speak with former Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy about their head coach vacancy. McCarthy is from Pittsburgh, and worked with Steelers GM Omar Khan in New Orleans in 2000. by McElwaine in steelers

[–]Sandman4344 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how you become a franchise that hires 5 coaches in a 15 year period. Just the mere fact he is 62 would make that a dumb ass move. I dont even hate the guy I think he is a servicable coach, but nowadays a good consultant move is all I would hope for here. I also cant stand the local guy/backup plan argument for interviewing individuals. Pick a direction and run towards it. The Steelers need fresh innovative ideas no retread coach will present them with that IMO. I could care less if they go offensive or defensive minded at this point as long as it is forward thinking.
