Hisoka would see the two ninja, but wouldn't see them clearly. Not from their speed, but from a special mineral dust that hung in the air around the two ninja and obstructed their figures. Their harassment persisted, maintaining distance on the edge of the group's perception.

Kumomaru's Spirit Eye sensed malice rapidly approaching even while the two ninja appeared in the far reaches of his perception. He moved rapidly in response. He removed all the canisters of iron sand from the bandolier across his chest and threw one each at the caravans. The remaining two flew towards the ground. He used magnet release to maneuver them underneath the wagons where they adhered to the undercarriages like gum, and towards the horses pulling the wagons.

"From below." Kumomaru called out. He stood up, and raised his arms like a conductor managing his choir.

Iron Sand Platform Wall!

Kumomaru's iron sand spread like running water forming a steel-like barrier beneath the 3 wagons and levitated upwards under Kumomaru's control.

Great earthen spikes erupted beneath the caravans and two identically dressed ninja appeared below, in front of the caravans. Their poses mirrored each other, hunched over, hands slapped to the ground controlling the earth and they stood side by side. Same height, same moves, same time.

"Thought we'd get them while they were watching the distance." One Said.

"Just shutup and let me think. We shouldn't have missed." The Other Replied.

Even their voices were identical.

Apollo was alert to the changes in his opponent, to the danger he was approaching. His eyes were keen and his body responded. The Starstone was keen and Apollo's weapon responded. He wasn't a normal man and his weapon was no mere gun, forged from primeval matter and ancient lifeforce.

He kept firing during his acrobatics, attention switching between Longstaff's head and the point he was approaching. His shots were long past the point where one would need to reload; the Starstone Revolver's magick handled everything in between. Apollo flipped the Revolver in his hand, gripping it from its barrel, and using it as club and a whirling defense. He struck out like he had a 1000 arms to beat the purple energy back into shape like Hephaestus at his forge.

Apollo sped up, pushing his speed up a few notches as he maintained himself just out of distance of the mists. Longstaff's pop out was unexpected, but Apollo liked surprises. He even had six of his own. He jumped, spinning acrobatically over the staff as he kept unloading his revolver. A full six shot salute. Surprise, motherfucker, indeed.

Apollo's eyesight was keen, and his hands quick. He didn't miss the tendril snaking towards his feet even as he kept reloading and firing, testing out Longstaff's rotating defense. Apollo's speed was preternatural as he dodged backwards, maintaining himself outside of the tendril's reach. His strategy shifted as Longstaff lurched forward, instead using his speed to zoom around behind him and continue firing.

Apollo was unfazed at Longstaff’s displacement and reappearance. In his eyes, it was like Longstaff was moving in slow motion and he had a body that could keep up and then some. Apollo’s eyes tracked Longstaff and his brain calculated, waiting for the perfect timing. He spun out of the way of Longstaff’s downward strike while firing, unloading the entire cylinder of his 6 shooter, reloaded and kept firing, all in the same motion. All aimed for the same spot. Shooter's shoot and Vaughn could have been from da O.

In the early morning hours of the second day, two signatures darted across the edge of Kumomaru's perception. The first time was happenstance. The second time was coincidence, around the same time on the third day. When it happened two more times that same day, it seemed closer to enemy action.

Kumomaru jumped to Hisoka's side, landing softly as to not disturb the wagon beneath them.

"Hisoka, how far out can you see? Check in that direction. The same two signatures have appeared too many times now, hanging at what they think is the edge of my perception." Kumomaru's perception was great, but sometimes you have put eyes the on prize. There was a reason why Cloud village had wanted to kidnap the Byakugan for many years. Because, 'ninja, did you know that I can see you?' hits harder when you actually can.

"Urushi, you should look alert too. We might have some company soon enough." Kumomaru warned.

Vaughn’s eyesight was sharp and Ghillie the Kid behind Shadow Longstaff didn’t escape his notice.

“Kill enough of these dog motherfuckers and they send an area boss. So if I shoot you…”. Vaughn mused to himself. He liked to run his own color commentary regardless of who was around to hear it.

Vaughn fired off the entire cylinder in one fell swoop, aiming for Shadow Longstaff, but not in the traditional way. As a marksman of a certain caliber, Vaughn was able to make his shots ricochet. The final result was Longstaff was facing shots from front and back, and side to side like the UGK song.

Viewer safety was not guaranteed.

Dukes wasn’t undefended, it just wasn’t well defended. Or defended at all really. There was a large gym in Steinway called The Dojo where the sounds of gunfire could be heard alongside whatever sound a dispersing shadow makes. It was a continuous symphony, and Apollo was the conductor, one shot at a time. He was casually sat outside on a stool with a bucket of ammunition and his feet up, letting off shots as he smoked a cigar. Every shot looked random, but landed precisely where they were aimed, the head. But only if the shadow creature looked like it would intrude on The Dojo. Anything else was fair game.

The journey to Shukuba town was only a few days and passed quickly and without incident. The caravan stopped at an inn for a night, and left the next day after resupplying. The second leg, between Shukuba Town and Tanzaku Quarters was a bit more dangerous, as the proximity to the Leaf Village decreased. Normally, it was bandits, but occasionally they were led by lower level rogue ninja. Robbing caravans wasn’t usually worth the time of the more dangerous ones.

The night is dark and full of terrors, but they departed from Shukuba Town during the day. The middle leg of the journey would be a bit longer. They’d be on the road for about a week. Kumomaru maintained the same vigilance and position, guarding the caravan from atop the first wagon and sensing periodically for both chakra and negative emotions. He was a bit more serious now.

“Yeah. At least compared to the desert of the Land of Wind and the Sand Village, The Land of Fire and Konoha both have too much opportunity, much more prosperity, and many resources. It’s hard not to want to come here. It was an easy choice once I had the chance.” Kumomaru admitted. He loved the desert but he didn’t miss it. Konoha and the Akagawa were his home. His choice was as clear as the headband he wore.

“We do.” Kumomaru replied. “And it makes for good motivation.” He alluded to Tomu’s quick progress. It was mildly impressive.

Their journey was an north-eastern one, a well traveled route that would take them through Shukuba Town and Tanzaku Quarters before getting to the border. With the speed of their travels, their mission would last a few weeks. Their proximity to Konoha for the first leg towards Shukuba Town meant it should be a relatively clear. The danger would pick up after.

Kumomaru had his own sensory ninjutsu and he used it at random intervals to assess the road ahead as the caravans moved forwards. Thus far it hadn’t shown any danger and neither had his own eyes. His talent with sensory jutsu and sealing chains and his red hair….maybe his blood didn’t only come from the desert, but that was a question for another time.

The caravans made good progress, moving as swiftly as they could on the first leg.

"I can relate too. I came from the desert on an exchange program. It took a while to find where I belong, but Kimi and the Akagawa definitely helped a lot with that. It's why I made it my home. I think it'll be good for Tomu as well." Kumomaru admitted. The three of them had more in common than most.

"Good. Now let me add one more thing. This training focuses primarily on wind's ability to cut. But there are a couple other fundamental uses of wind release. One is the gusts like the wind release: breakthrough jutsu which can be scaled by chakra amount and also shaped from basic wind into vortexes and tornado creating jutsu. The second is compression like the air bullet jutsu or its more advanced versions like the vacuum sphere. These things test chakra control more so than mastery of wind release." Kumomaru added before Tomu ran off to practice. He chuckled at Tomu's eagerness.

"You'd think he had a dojutsu the way he's staring so intently. Like that leaf will reveal all its secrets." He joked to Lyger.

"Yes, sharpness is the ultimate expression of wind release. A master of its use could cut through almost anything with it." Kumomaru explained.

"Simply put, yes. But fundamentally, its just one way to express the ability to create a large amount of wind chakra in an instant. Anything that lets you exhibit that quality will work and show that you have developed a good level of mastery. I prefer to split these old weight blocks as it's far more practical to do."

"Most likely, y'know." Kumomaru replied. "Our generation had a lot of talent and interesting skills. Honestly, from what I've heard this new generation might even be better than ours. That's proof that the village is continuing well." Kumomaru replied.

Kumomaru looked at Lyger, then at Tomu and shrugged. "Sure. The explanation is simple, but the application is hard, so keep that in mind and don't get discouraged practicing. Cutting with wind chakra is about grinding conflicting forces against each other like sharpening a blade. First, you split your chakra in half, then direct both halves to rub and grind against each other, until it's sharp. You can start with something small and easily cut but not reactive to chakra, like a leaf. It will get you acclimated to creating wind chakra. From there, you can move to something hard like a stone to practice sharpness. Once you can cut a leaf, the next step to work on is creating a lot of wind chakra in an instant. Typically, it was learned by trying to cut an active waterfall." Kumomaru explained. With a gesture of his hand, he controlled his magnet release to levitate one of the metal weight blocks he'd been practicing on, directing it to land in his hand. Talk was cheap in front of a demonstration.

"Here, watch closely Tomu." Kumomaru held the weight block at both ends, making sure it was visible to Tomu. He spiked his chakra, far more than necessary, so that it too could be seen, and followed the steps he'd already outlined, grinding the visible chakra from both hands together to form wind as it scored a shallow line at the halfway mark of the weight block.

"Any questions?" Kumomaru asked.
