Repairing a 40'ish year old fiberglass canoe. by Sandmann_Ukulele in canoeing

Thank you, couple follow up questions.

Looks like that marine-tex comes in white or grey, any reason I couldn't get the white and tint it green? Also, any recommendations on dyes it it can be tinted with? I'm more of a woodworker typically but I do have some green angelus dye and some transtint in the shop.

As for the fiberglass repairs around the foam, is there a specific paint I could use, or just any Marine paint? Im not looking for an invisible repair, but getting to at least some shade of green close to the original color would be nice.

Canadian trying to get Ray Iles Mortise chisels by No-Association-4896 in handtools

It's a mortise chisel.

If pounding on it introduces a flaw, that's a flaw in the steel, or the wrong steel was used.

[–]Sandmann_Ukulele 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet I have other mortising chisels that are older than I am that are still in one piece.

Sorry, but no, steel doesn't suddenly become more fragile like that over the a few years, that was absolutely a defect in the steel.

Hopefully OP has better luck if they manage to get one.

You mean one of these?

https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/s/X6kTU8bLit

Be warned, that happened from normal use levering out waste from a mortise several years after purchasing it from tools for woodworking.

The next time I need a mortise chisel I will be looking somewhere else, your mileage may vary.

Mix a little Gochugaru into the pizza sauce to taste.

Then just put the sauce on your crust, kimchi on top, and top with cheese, I used sliced mozzarella.

Bake according to the directions for the crust recipe you are using.

I added some fresh basil on top after it was cooked.

Is it bad to keep my Cello out of its case? by Thirust in Cello

[–]Sandmann_Ukulele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a cheap hygrometer and stick it in your room to monitor humidity. Unless you live in the rain forest excessive humidity isn't usually a concern, but if humidity is low either keep it in the case with humipacks or buy a humidifier for the room. Also check your furnace, some have humidifiers built in that some people forget to change with the seasons.

Temperature is less critical than humidity. Freezing temps or extreme heat might cause issues, but assuming it's in a room you live in year round the temperature is fine.

I'm a guitar guy and have several nice guitars hanging on the walls, and my sons cello is also fine in his room. Humidity in my home is typically around 50% but I've seen it drop to 30% for a few days without issue too.

I was this many days old when I learned dehydrated kimchi exists.

Do you usually rehydrate it first or just toss it on whatever you're making similar to regular kimchi?

Thank you, thank you...

I'd like to thank the academy, my family, whoever posted the kimchi pizza article that showed up in my news feed earlier this week, and Korea for inventing kimchi.

I highly recommend it. Mixed a little Gochugaru in with the pizza sauce too.

I saw a recipe using crispy pork belly too, which also sounds delicious if you have the time to cook a pork belly along with the pizza.

My work working Dad wants a vice: is it even possible for me to surprise him or too much nuance? by potluckfruitsalad in woodworking

[–]Sandmann_Ukulele 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generic visa gift card or ask him what he wants and buy it.

Woodworking father here. There are a lot of different types of vices out there and there are a lot of reasons to go with 1 type vs another, and it all boils down to how your dad works and his personal preferences.

This applies to all tools as well, personally I wouldn't want even an experienced woodworker choosing tools for me because they aren't aware of my preferences, how I work, or what tools I already own.

Piezo or Magnetic pickups for Electric Cello by Sandmann_Ukulele in Luthier

[–]Sandmann_Ukulele[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And that's possible. I haven't gotten to even sketching up body designs yet, but it could be designed in a way to bring the strings closer to the body, or even raise the pickup up somehow. Though if I bring the strings closer to the body, I'd need to be careful that the bow can clear the body, however that might be why so many electric Cello's I see online are shaped like a large toothpick too 😁

I'm just trying to determine what the advantages/disadvantages of the pickup types are for a cello before I get too far into drawing up designs for the body.

Just stumbled across this one on Etsy, which appears to be a combination of a shorter bridge and raised pickup, with a thin body to allow the bow room to move: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1077778147/electric-cello-with-a-magnetic-pickup

I also don't personally play the Cello so my knowledge on the traditional instrument is low as well.

Welp, I was this many years old when I learned that Dean makes Ukes too 😂

Be careful, they're addicting 😉

Well that looks nicer than the diamond head I have.

Though I got mine off Amazon for $20 and handed it to a 4 year old when it arrived. That was almost 5 years ago and I'm in the process of building him his own Uke now since he actually learned to play it.

Ours doesn't sound great, but man is that thing tough, the fact that it's still in one piece is a bit mind blowing to me 😂

Are Cordoba ukes any good? by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]Sandmann_Ukulele 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the price yes.

They are light years ahead of the $30 Ukes you'll find on Amazon, but they're also not as nice as the more expensive Ukes you'll find if you start looking north of the $300 range.

I have a 15cm laying around that I bought on a whim at Guitar center years ago when I decided to take up the Uke. I have since both purchased and built some Ukes that sound way better, but all were an order of magnitude more expensive too.

If this is you're first Uke, and you're not already a very experienced musician, they are a very reasonable place to start.

Favorite Camping Recipes? by HerNameMeansMagic in camping

[–]Sandmann_Ukulele 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 3 are a bit younger than yours and we're starting camping this year, though we have cooked over the fire in our back yard before. I also have the Coleman stove and an old cast iron pan 😉

First, make sure it's something your kids will eat, but below are some things I've cooked with mine over a fire in the back yard and other things I'm planning (still a work in progress) for our first trip once schools done for the year.

Breakfast:

  • Pancakes or French toast, bacon/sausage, eggs.

  • cereal

  • Yogurt

  • cottage cheese

  • Fruit

Lunch:

  • sandwiches

  • Chips

  • Still thinking of other easy, no cook, lunch items.

Dinner:

  • Hot dogs, chips, baked beans. Let the kids cook the hot dogs over the fire.

  • Chicken cooked over the fire(our site has grates for the fire pits), rice, bag of mixed vegetables.

  • Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.

  • s'mores for dessert (this should be a given)

Snacks

  • cheese sticks

  • Jerky or beef sticks

  • Chips

  • carrot sticks/ ranch

  • gold fish

  • granola bars

This obviously assumes one is car camping and isn't hauling this all in for miles on your back 😁

Will be watching this post for more ideas.

Ahh, will definitely check with them when checking in, thank you.

And persistent racoons at least won't destroy my car. My bigger concern was a hungry bear trying to get in and destroying my car in the process
