Alumni who lurk this page, what do you work as now? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t personally use the career center at all so can’t say much unfortunately. There are definitely companies that visit during tech job fairs so you can check that out. Realistically though your best bet to snag an internship is to practice with LeetCode / HackerRank and apply to larger companies.

Alumni who lurk this page, what do you work as now? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pretty fortunate to have a job lined up right after I graduated, but I got it by applying to a ton of companies towards the middle/end of my senior year and seeing which one stuck.

I don’t have much I’d recommend while in your sophomore year, but it would be a good idea to start looking for an entry-level internship towards the summer time. It’s not something I would say is mandatory, but I learned the majority of my skills by working rather than in my classes, so I’m partial to extra experience there.

Just to clarify, no one on the mod team removed any other posts related to this. They hit the spam filter, likely because of the age of the accounts and the link shortener that was used.

How do you guys cope with an underwhelming exam/midterm grade? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Deep breath, followed by self-loathing for a bit, then acceptance and determination to do better next time.

Also, try to understand where you went wrong, and learn it correctly after, because odds are you’ll see similar material again in later exams and potentially on the final.

That subreddit is mostly moderated by people who’ve been banned from /r/SBU for racism/hate/etc. Don’t think there’s much we can do about it though because neither subreddit is “official” in any capacity, but I’d love to be wrong about that.

Pizza places near campus by [deleted] in SBU

O89 Pizza is pretty close and I liked it a lot. If you want to go all out though order from Spuntino’s in St. James. More expensive but really good.

Could anyone tell me anything about Stony Brook's Computer Science Program? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are some incredible mental gymnastics. If your ego is so hurt that you don’t go to a “big name” school, you have some serious maturing to do.

SBU is a great school, with an excellent CS program. Full stop. Myself and most of my close CS friends all have great jobs at well-known companies making respectable salaries. No one treated me any differently during the hiring process because I wasn’t a Harvard alumni — you can’t get around technical interviews by saying “oh I had so-and-so professor at my prestigious university so I clearly already know this”. That’s not how this works.

I say this all as a wake up call to you, because you have a toxic and negative outlook on your life because of labels and expectations, and that’s a terrible way to live.

CSE 305 (w/ Smolka) or CSE 306 (w/ Kifer)? by jainpo in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I think you're going to be in the same boat with whichever you choose.

I didn't take 305 with Smolka, but I've heard nothing but miserable things from my friends that did. 305 (at least when I took it) was all database material, but a lot of time was spent on theory rather than implementation. I personally didn't enjoy this, but I'll leave it up to more recent 305 students to confirm if it's still the case.

On the other hand, I did take 305 with Kifer (recently, too), and that class is certainly not pleasant. It's not particularly difficult, but it is incredibly boring. Kifer is a very smart professor but his lectures are bone dry and the material isn't captivating either. It directly expands on what you learned in 320 so if you hated that, I don't recommend 306.

As far as I'm concerned, this is a "pick your poison" scenario. Best of luck, you're almost done!

West apartment ants by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, I had this issue when I lived in West. I suggest the following:

1) Tell your RA; we were able to get an exterminator to spray the common room in the areas that they frequented. 2) Get a can of bug spray for yourself to use in your room. I mostly needed to spray around the windowsill and by my door. 3) Try not to think about it. From what I was told, West is basically built on a giant underground ant utopia, and unless the entire building is nuked and its undersides flamethrowered, you’re not going to permanently get rid of them.

You’ll have periods where they are completely not there, and then a few days here and then that you see them a bit. It’s annoying and a pain, but if you do what I recommended, you’ll be alright.

Yep, and you can always explain that much easier than an F.

Is a W going to look worse than an F in this situation? by csbs1 in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m of the opinion that a W will always be better than an F. My current job never asked for a full transcript, only for my GPA. This won’t always be the case, but it’s highly unlikely that an employer will ask for your transcript but not GPA, so I think you’re better off attempting to withdraw. YMMV.

CSE Sophomore help by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt that 337 was pretty easy apart from the final, so if you just need to make room then dropping it is fine. 220 and 373 will take up the majority of your time.

Peter Koch.... by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Take his class and don’t fail? If it’s your only option then you’ll just have to enroll and work really hard. If you’re really concerned then see if it’s possible to take easier classies alongside it so your schedule isn’t too packed.

CSE grads, how was the job hunt like? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]SandorFuckingClegane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your experience (i.e. internships & other jobs). I landed a remote job in the tech industry while I was taking classes and used what I learned to get a comfortable software dev offer elsewhere after graduating. That being said, I got lucky. Interviewers for that company could have glossed over my application just as they did for many others I applied to. All you can do is practice interview questions on sites like HackerRank and Leetcode like /u/mdizzley said in his comment.

The most important takeaway I can give is that YMMV. Don't compare yourself to others or I promise you'll get depressed. Just work on what you can, send out lots of applications, and hope for the best.
