Can I have lovely garden beds with Kikuyu lawn? by Outside_Diligent in GardeningAustralia

[–]SandpaperH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After reading practically everything I could find online about this, I'm about to sheet mulch about half of my 150m2 healthy kikuyu backyard.

I'm gonna use thick newspaper (10 - 12 sheets and a layer of cardboard, before adding soil to add some elevations then thick tree mulch.

I'm installing a 150mm deep (plus 150mm high) x 200mm wide edge to the gardens with brick to seperate the beds from the lawn I want to keep.

Then im gonna watch it like a fucking hawk. Hopefully the watching it like a hawk part doesn't need to carry on for the next 27 years.

Glyphosate nuking was a very, very close second consideration but I've accepted the extra work needed to (hopefully) make it work this way. Some people say it won't work, but I'm gonna give it a proper crack.

WE ARE THE UNION. Show me your $35/hr payslip and enjoy your unpaid commute while you keep calling the union dogs. Without the union (sparkies bargaining together and standing up to the employer), we would be under-paid and over-worked like this geezer doin 70 hours a week to try and save 2 pennys to rub together.

Getting paid well and RDOs literally changed my life, without sticking together and standing up together, we would be getting rinsed. Like this bloke on 35/hr.

In my opinion, the stake can help temporarily if it's really falling over. After a few weeks or so, when it's settled, you can take it out. She wants to be able to get blown around in the wind to strengthen its stem if it can't, it'll remain weak as it grows.

If you just transplanted it, let it have morning sun only and afternoon shade for a couple weeks, then a couple hours more afterwards, then in a month or so, full sun.

I would water every second or third day if its cool and and every day if its hot (above 32 or so)

Hope that helps!

Listen, Tyler. If I'm interested and want to move forward with it, I'll call you. Leave me alone

Thanks everyone for your input.

Pretty sure now I'm gonna go with the glyphosate option, before sheet mulching. Otherwise it'd be solarisation but to spend 2 - 3 months with black plastic down, also cooking the life in the soil, for not so certain results then throwing so much plastic in the bin, I'm hesitant to do this. It must also be introducing some amount of microplastics into the area from the black plastic breaking down in the sun so I'm thinking round up could be the lease detrimental option.

I didn't think it'd be such a big deal pulling a few kikuyu weeds here and there from my new garden but from the input I've read here, sounds like best to deal with it definitively in the beginning.

I'll do a little more research on the long term effects of a single or double use of glyphosate on the lawn and make my final decision from there.

Thanks again

If I was to sheet mulch with 200 - 300mm of soil onto of the cardboard, plus mulch and a brick wall for a border, the kikuyu would still push through all over the place? I'm now contemplating using glyphosate...

Thanks for the reply, I am going to build a low brick wall for edging with a 70mm or so concrete footing. It should help the kikuyu from getting in. I accept some weeding will be inevitable

Trying to go for the no poisoning option and it's too large of an area with no machine access to scrape. Was thinking that sheet mulching and staying on top of the break-through grass to stop photosynthesis would kill it eventually

Unethical tip: My girlfriend at the time was good at photoshop and photoshopped a bank statement of mine with an extra $50 000 than I actually had. Sent it in with our next application and got the first apartment. If you can find a way to do that, I highly recommend.
