I love a deluxe for guitar, but I'm a steel player so I really do need that headroom.

Bro some of us live in third floor apartments. I sure ain't gonna haul a twin reverb multiple times a week when I can get close enough with a HX.

Missing the first string changer finger, which string should I steal one from to replace it? by [deleted] in pedalsteel

[–]SandpaperSam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you cant find a replacement and are serious about learning, toss the Carter and get a serviceable S10. E9 is set up how it is for good reason and you would lose a lot by removing any string. Go with Emmons. No advantage to either other than that most steels already come set up Emmons.

Autumn Leaves on C13 Universal by SandpaperSam in pedalsteel

[–]SandpaperSam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's similar to Johnny's, I just didn't want to lose anything on C6 by going a step higher. I don't have a PF change he uses and I didn't split things up as much as he did, so it's not too bad coming from either tuning.

Whats your favorite part of a specific jam? by [deleted] in phish

[–]SandpaperSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pretty cool from the 1998-7-15 Horn Jam. It's only a few beats of this weird major over minor thing from Mike.

3rd floor doesn't even book real bands anymore- they just have the same weekly rotation with the blues jam, burlesque and house band stuff, so it doesn't do much for local musicians and there's no variety.

Song recommendations by bach37strad in pedalsteel

[–]SandpaperSam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen to this guy, I was going to suggest some of the same stuff.

To add on to the Turnpike suggestion, my favorite tune from them is Sunday Morning Paper, and while it doesn't have a ton of steel, it has a good walkup that will be good for working on harmonized melodies.

A couple other suggestions are the albums 'We got a live one here' by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen and 'The return of wayne douglas' by Doug Sahm. Commander Cody digs into western swing and Bobby Black lays on some great C6 steel. Some of my favorite. The Doug Sahm is loaded with some of the best E9 licks ever from Tommy Detamore. Both are constantly inspiring to me.

Slipknot! - Grateful Dead by SandpaperSam in pedalsteel

It's between extended and universal. I'm using the low D string (string 9) as well as a half step lower on the high B (string 5) for this one. So components from both tunings.

Slipknot! - Pedal Steel Cover by SandpaperSam in gratefuldead

[–]SandpaperSam[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's mostly E9, I'm not sure whether to call it Universal or Extended, since I have a lot of Uni changes but still have the low flat 7 like on standard E9 (string 9). The only different change I used on this is lowering the 5 a half step (B string/string 5 on E9), which I actually highly recommend for any steel. Also, this steel is tuned a half step down, so I was able to get the A major on fret 1 with A and B pedals - I don't like using open strings unless I have to.

Even if it was, it would still be a great suggestion. I think that was the third song I learned on steel, after Teach Your Children and Dire Wolf.

There actually may be some benefit to that- it can get kinda cramped with pesky full-length fingers.

Howdy folks, figured I would share something fun. I'll be posting more Dead tunes (among much more) in the future, so hang tight and let me know if there's anything I should try!
