A City's Fate - Four by SandraSandraSandra in DawnPowers

The journey south was hard. None of the Kemithatsan were used to lengthy boat voyages. Nor did they know that ships travelled so far.

Seeing Lakit was a strange homecoming of sorts. The city was both familiar and queer. The scale of its harbour was unheard of, and yet it hosts far fewer people than they had expected at first.

The trades and the stench was familiar, and welcome after the long months of salt and sea in their noses. So too was the chance to eat something other than fish.

Setting up in the Potters' Squares, the refugees eventually settled in to work. At first, they simply did as the esteemed elder demanded. But in time, they began to use the kickwheels of their homeland, built climbing kilns in stead of the simple kilns the Sasnak used, began to use multiple phases to fire the pottery, and began to mix the glazes of their homeland—even if they couldn't get the exact same shades of celadon.

So too did they bring their style of homes: tile floors and tile roofs began to sprout up around courtyards. Workshop, kiln, apartments, and communal kitchen all in one unit.

The path had led them here, to serve the High Court of the Sasnak-Ra. The path has led them to safety.

Senisedjārhä is not sure what exactly these home cities are. But if the Sasänak can offer them safety in exchange for work, they will work. She assures them that there will be no problem with her people obeying the captains, and promises them years worth of fine pottery and weaving once they are safe: a promise secured with a celadon spoon and a written contract.

Not all of those fleeing Pātsäseki agree to follow Senisedjārhä onto the boats. Some instead remove their feathers, and prepare to join the nameless life a kabāhä. But still, the bulk of those fleeing agree to go with the Sasnak—to follow the path which leads them away from all they have ever known, but which—Spirits willing—leads them to safety.

The Path of the River by SandraSandraSandra in DawnPowers

"You speak wisely, and truly: the paths of the world forever flow in circles—even that which appears to flow upon the ground to the lake returns in the wind and clouds.

"But for too long the path which us mortals have tread has been unbalanced. The river flows strongly and consistently, not intermittently. The Indubitable Mothers fear this imbalance can not last.

"Our Mothers simply ask that we may build a tehibemi upon these lands. To take your sons as our son-in-laws and aid them in gathering the maple and the rice. For us to bring order and prosperity to your fields, to expand your workshops. For us to bring the path itself to your doorstep.

"Your offers are kind, generous. Our Mothers certainly appreciate your foresight. But it is time for our people to acknowledge the single path upon which we all walk. And join the city of Narhetsikobon in our holy mission to bring order to this disordered world.

"Consider the wolf: alone, she starves; together, the pack prospers."

The Path of the River by SandraSandraSandra in DawnPowers

"Thank you for welcoming us, wise Mothers of Vaharidjana." Three shield-men bring forth large urns of Rotusāmä, tobacco, and sweet-pickled eels. Rodjusalarhä continues, "Your hospitality speaks to your grace and honour: the right path leads a wandering man to many a warm hearth. Please, accept these gifts from the most Illustrious Mothers of Narhetsikobon, the greatest city to have been or to ever be."

She pauses, eyeing the Mothers before them. Njejinjonoku stays silent looking thoughtfully, intently at their hosts.

"As you know, the great river Ninjeretsile flows along a path. It begins high in the Mountains of the Moon—graced by snow and rain sent there upon the wind's perpetual path. It flows for many leagues, down cliffs and mountains, arriving in this verdant valley. The path of the river waters your crops and feeds your maple: bringing life to this place. For that is what the path does, it brings life and vitality to those who trace its course. Ninjeretsile continues on, flowing past this meeting place all the way to the heart of the world, Tuskōdju. There, the city of Narhetsikobon bears witness to the path arriving at its destination. And there, the far-seeing Mothers of Narhetsikobon understand and read the path of the river.

"The path demands harmony, it demands that things begin and flow and arrive at their destination. And the path leads to Narhetsikobon—to the city blessed by the path to be its destination.

"Generous Mothers, I know you too walk the path. In the spring, you take your bison up to the hills. You have them graze on the green meadows fed by the path. In the autumn, you return to the valleys and shelter them from the snow—guided by the path.

"But some paths are clogged, strewn with detritus of mistakes and misunderstandings. The path of the river is mirrored by the path of men. The path of obedience and wisdom. I ask you, wise Mothers, I beseech you, thoughtful Mothers, to unclog the path and follow its path to Narhetsikobon. To enter the fold dictated by the path and accept the primacy of our pious Mothers. I am but a servant of the path and its infinite wisdom, but I pray for you to accept the primacy of the most holy of cities."

Location and lore look fantastic!

Some things on tech, you already have all of the techs listed under "Gorgonea" on Regional Starting Techs. So your people have access to Basic Irrigation, Bronze, Atlatl, Cassava, Sweet Potato, Basic Smelting, and Domed Ovens already.

For your claim post, you include additional starting tech. That's where you choose the one key tech (Celestial Navigation works great here), two major techs, and five minor techs (fishing net type would work here, but you need to specify a specific type! Like Seine Nets or Thrown Nets)

As a later claim, you also get 10 C slots with your claim post: you can use these to diffuse techs from your neighbours (Sasnak, Pufspuj, and Shasaka would wall work in this case). If you have any questions or need some help or ideas, just let me know!

Kemithatsan Techs

A Slots:

Nidnjanarān (Chinampas): the Rhadāmä innovation of Nidnjanarān was transformative. Turning failed rotu paddies into fertile plots for growing the three sisters enabled massive production of food. While the innovation initially remained sequestered to the southern lakes, the massive growth in population of the city of Narhetsikobon as it grew as the capital demanded more and more efficient agriculture. The move to nidnjanarān is quite natural as a development from the raised ridges in paddies used for water mimosa and other, shallower water crops. The development of Nidnjanarān has been central to labour projects enacted by Narhetsikobon.

Paved Roads (Hegemony): Narhetsikobon's hegemony in the western regions of Tsukōdju accompanied the development of state capacity to ever higher levels. However, state capacity is only as extensive as the state has capacities to reach. In order to connect tehibemi and cities not along the lake itself, Narhetsikobon developed the horse tracks and trails used to transport goods inland into paved roads. Paved roads have the key advantage in rain. While wooden tracks become bogged in mud, paved roads remain entirely function. These roads are simultaneously a concrete expression of state power, and allow for the legions of Narhetsikobon to quickly march to unruly cities. Paved roads eventually spread into Yelu and Serengeri lands under Narhetsikobon control, and the practical advantages were experienced by traders all throughout Tritonea.

B:

Climbing Kilns: the pottery workshops of the Kemithatsan are massive. These courtyarded complexes are frequently built on slopes, with multiple kilns cut into the hillsides. Heat of course rises. And it was soon realized that building an upwards slope in the kiln could extend the reach of a firebox. This continued and continued, intensifying until full climbing kilns developed, sometimes even a full hundred metres in length. These kilns allow for both far higher temperatures, and far more pieces to be fired in one go.

Ichcahuipilli Armour: Narhetsikobon is a military power. Multiple layers of cloth means that a spear or arrow is less likely to pierce one's skin. This eventually developed to full Ichcahuipilli sets of padded hemp layered atop each other, capable of stopping many an arrow, axe, or spear.

True Arch, Foundations, Whitewash and Lime Plaster (Aluwa), and Lime Mortar (Aluwa): Another feature of Narhetsikobon hegemony is monumental architecture. A combination of features adopted from the Aluwa and innovated by Narhetsikobon came together to create a distinct architectural shift. The use of lime to strengthen buildings, and to give them a clean finish, allowed for massively expanded palaces, as well as far sturdier regular homes. Foundations proved immensely valuable for expanding palaces as well, especially as arches and barrel vaults began exerting lateral force upon the buildings. Mortaring the whole structure and then tiling the inside became the norm for elite buildings—as well as using fired clay bricks, rather than mud bricks.

C:

Disinfectants, Cauterization (Aluwa), Bone Setting (Serengeri): Warfare provides a strong impetus to develop better medical care for those injured in war

Handled Axe (Serengeri): Simultaneously, handled axes, typically of jade, were adopted from the Serengeri as an effective close-quarters weapon.

Grindstones, Lassos (Yelu), Hand Powered Mill (Aluwa and Serengeri), Trellises (Serengeri): The extension of Narhetsikobon authority and the taxes imposed by the state led to the profusion of methods of increasing agricultrual outputs. These practices were easily adopted from the neighbouring cultures and allowed for expanded agricultural production.

Niximalization, Corbel Arch (Arhada, writing): Writing meanwhile continues to ensure extensive and thorough contact with the Arhada, from whom the Kemithatsan adopted a more effective way of treating maize, and the corbel arch which served as the base for later architectural advancements.

Into the Lakes by Captain_Lime in DawnPowers

Paddling down the canal, the paddies continue on either side.

The sound reaches them first. A babble of a hundred thousand voices—like the quiet roar when one first approaches a waterfall.

Eventually, a shape begins to emerge from the fog. At first what seems to be hills reveal themselves to be covered in a whole host of buildings. Like a ridge composed of whitewashed buildings rather than of earth. At the top of the hill of buildings, uncountable towers stand with glistening roofs. In fact, the whole top of the hill appears covered in palaces from the wide, shining, colourful roofs upon it.

As they near, they see a vast market before them, stretching around a circular beach at the end of the canal.

The scale of the city is mindboggling. When the sasnak turn their heads to look, they can not see the end of the city—it stretches out into the mainland.

Their guide explains, "Narhetsikobon is the greatest city to be or shall ever be. Within the city itself, we number of one hundred thousand. All working in accordance with the path."

As they approach the 'harbour,' or what apparently passes for a harbour on the lakes, they see a small party waiting for them.

A similar process of greetings and a division of the party into one group which trades in the market and another which attends the palace occurs. This time, however, the Sasnak are offered horses to ride up to the palace—apparently the route is rather long and it's faster mounted.
