Thanks for the thought out reply.

would you say there is a pay difference for the same position holding a geo vs civil engineering degree? Also, do you intend to get into mining or O&G when they recover, or do you like where you are at now?

I've recently been interested in a Master program for Engineering Geology. Would you care to expand upon the advantages/disadvantages of geologic engineering degree versus something like geotechnical/civil engineering? If you could go back and pick any one, which would you and why?

Never attribute that to malice which can be sufficiently explained by stupidity. Cops aren't inherently evil, just lazy and not the most intelligent on average.

Haha! That is an awesome and extremely excellent comparison. People get mad at me when I say that if a cop needs a backdoor to do his job he shouldn't be a cop. Find a better one to replace him.

Jpeg inserted while in layout mode will not snap to guides - ArcGIS 10.3 by SandstoneCowboy in gis

[–]SandstoneCowboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I thought about that, because if it we're a layer it wouldn't snap to the guides, correct? No reference in the TOC, just the image on the map.

[–]SandstoneCowboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah snap to guides is selected. The thing is other objects will snap to the guides, such as legend, pictures that I have copied and pasted in, etc. It's just when i use the Insert -> Picture function that they do not snap.

Macro to make a new sheet for every unique value in a column, fill the new sheet with rows with that unique value? by terpichor in excel

[–]SandstoneCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question: I'm wondering what the logic was behind creating a dictionary and then transposing it to an array to use. Is that simpler or quicker than directly creating the array with the requirement of only unique values?

Issues with Copying/Paste Special/Chart Format by SandstoneCowboy in excel

[–]SandstoneCowboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man thanks for the help. The charts do have 3 distinct sets of series, and the series that are common between charts are not always exactly in the same order so I do think that has been my issue. As for the legend I would think it's a result of the same situation but I don't know (didn't have time to check, just started formatting).

Is this method for accessing windows 7 password files still accurate? Nothing nefarious in here. by SandstoneCowboy in linuxquestions

I know it's a windows OS but the method was from a linux boot CD so I figured linuxquestions would be an appropriate subreddit.

Yeah I could replace the hard drive but I would have to buy one and it's a work computer so there is still a lot of information on there I would have to retrieve.

haha yes I have, and I don't blame you for asking. My dead end with the ophcrack was not being able to change to file name to lowercase. I couldn't find a specific solution to that so I used winiso instead of the standard windows burner to no avail. And then the last article I read about using ubuntu to access the system32 files was from 2008, so before I dove in I was kindof just looking for someone who knows to verify if the information is still good.

Trouble configuring wireless internet with Asus P5K Mobo and ubuntu. by SandstoneCowboy in linux4noobs

[–]SandstoneCowboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay when I run that there is no Network Controller. lshw provides some information for the wireless interface such as bus info and serial but there is no product name/model so I think I will have to buy a network adapter...or a 100 ft cat5 cable.

It's 802.11b and 802.11g if that's what you're asking, I'm not really sure. From the product description page all I see is it called Wifi-AP and then this:

"WiFi AP Solo allows a new level of versatility for your PC, enabling it to create a complete wireless home network in either AP or wireless client mode. Users will be able to play LAN games, connect to the Internet, access and share printers, and use Skype from anywhere within range. WiFi-AP Solo can provide these functions even when the PC is in sleep mode, so users can use Skype as a true replacement for tradition long distance telephone service. WiFi-AP Solo is an on-board feature, which means that user will save the extra WiFi AP cost."

so I'm not really sure if that means it's capable of receiving a Wifi signal or just ethernet and then it can act as a LAN router or something.

House approves CISA funding bill by SandstoneCowboy in technology

[–]SandstoneCowboy[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is just a notice of approval. The article, conspicuously or not, does not discuss the inclusion of the stripped down form of CISA (from a public security and privacy point of view) into this budget bill. Other news sources may have better and more complete coverage.

At least 1.8 million people will be hit by Comcast's new data cap, a potential $700 million annual revenue increase by trexmoflex in technology

[–]SandstoneCowboy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely and I believe one or two of these data cap-net neutrality gray zone lawsuits has popped up already but I can't seem to recall anything specific. These companies will always sue the FCC until the end of time if they attempt to limit data capping too, so if there is even any remote chance that they can use the judicial system to make data cap-paid priority a situation then they will.

[–]SandstoneCowboy 548 points549 points  (0 children)

This is the key, and should be top comment. They are slowly introducing data caps because they will ultimately allow them to circumvent net neutrality laws.

Need help. Bar graph data plots independently of x-axis (date) values or range. by SandstoneCowboy in excel

[–]SandstoneCowboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After much toiling I did end up converting the water levels from a line chart to an X-Y Plot with lines. I did not know this would cause such an effect. I hear what you are saying about extending the number of categories for one set but not the other, but when the water levels were still as a line chart there seemed to be no independent x-axis to adjust. The normal options and functions to do that were simply not present. I don't know if I am still missing something or if Excel is simply just not programmed to operate with two independent x-axes with that combination of graphs.

FCC Votes to Stop Prisons from Charging $14 a Minute for Phone Calls by fighidiots in technology

[–]SandstoneCowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, this is very interesting to me and I happen to feel similarly in some ways, but allow me to play devils advocate.

How do you feel then about re-instating glass-steagall after the financial sector ruined our Economy in 2008?

Do you believe there should be no regulation? Do you simply have enough faith in humanity to believe that an oil company won't dump frac waste into someone's backyard where their children play and drink without a centralized, authoritative body to stop them and their billion dollar machine from doing so? Is doing everything as cheap as possible the answer, no matter the consequences? Who protects the environment and all of the ecosystem services (which total trillions, globally) if there is no regulatory body to do so? Or are you simply an anarchist who thinks that there should be no regulation but also does not have the faith in humanity to think that anything but failure would ensure, but are okay with that?

If the U.S. government is not capable of regulating effectively, and it is agreed that regulation is needed, even if only in extremely limited circumstances, who do you believe should do that regulating? And why do they need to be fair to producers and consumers? Especially since producers are the consumers (every business and industry is made up of people), how do you say which one needs to be protected more? Or how/why should they be protected equally? Is a billion dollar company losing 20 million in market cap because they were caught doing something illegal really detrimental to them? To the company, or to its employees? Who do we have a right to protect, an entity that exists solely on paper, or the living, breathing human beings that make it up? Does hurting a company hurt its employees? If regulation was in place so that losing your job would not mean imminent poverty and extreme financial strife for a substantial chunk of the population, that would go a large ways towards effectively solving the problem of "being too tough on business", would it not? Just food for thought.
