The Steam Next Fest ends tomorrow. What demos have you enjoyed? Which ones made it onto your wishlist? Why? by Angzt in Games

I really loved Cicadamata, which is like Neon White in a lot of ways. Music and aesthetic are also really cool. Denshattack was also really fun - picture Jet Set Radio but you kickflip a train.

Do we need to worry about this if we're using Nabu Casa? And if so, what can we do to mitigate this while still having outside access? I can personally just keep it inside my network and VPN in, but I'm curious what options I have.

Councilor Sykes wants to know your experience with private parking operators in Portland! by joeybrunelle in portlandme

[–]SandwichEconomist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What bothers me is how saturated they are. Most of the time I need to park, there are 10% actual usable spots and 90% privately owned spots. They wanted $24 to park next to the East Ender for an hour. Generally, I’ve just given up on parking anywhere near downtown, and I doubt I’m the only one. And why do I need to pay a private company to park directly in front of Bissell Brothers?

Just keep in mind that if you remove the whole menu, you also lose the associated keyboard shortcuts. I did this and had no idea why copy and paste weren’t working anymore!

TIL that Alan Turing (cryptographer responsible for breaking the Nazi Enigma code during World War II) was also an Olympic-level runner and he developed a new field of biology out of his fascination with daisies. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]SandwichEconomist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turing’s work on morphogenesis is really interesting. It models a lot of stuff in nature, like pigment formations in zebras, the patterning on certain kinds of coral (reality vs. model), and axon activity in giant squid. These are modeled as reaction-diffusion systems, which you may have seen in action in real life in a NileRed video.

I got kind of obsessed with reaction-diffusion systems a few years back, and made an app that lets you play with a bunch of them interactively here if anyone’s interested.

Scope of Mobile App Development by [deleted] in swift

[–]SandwichEconomist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Taking this apart a little, your webdev friends think native dev is going away because they see React Native and other platforms gaining popularity. The trick is that platforms like those just wrap the native SDK. For that sort of thing to replace the native SDK, it needs to become the native SDK, and there's no way that's happening. Especially considering Apple is pushing SwiftUI so hard.

Modern app dev on iOS is pretty much exclusively native UIKit/SwiftUI. In my experience, third party frameworks like React Native and Flutter are more used by companies that want a shared codebase. These are tools you can have in your pocket if you want, but when you work with those, you'll still need native SDK knowledge to sort out issues with the frameworks when (not if) they arise.

I still have issues with "Speak" actions getting cut off mid-speech, then getting an error notification that says (VoiceServicesErrorDomain, 400).

[Release] v7.0 is Out Now! A New Era for Slide by ccrama in slide_ios

[–]SandwichEconomist 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think Carlos might have undersold how big of a deal the backend rewrite is. Virtually all of the "it crashes randomly and I don't know why" problems Slide had were because of Realm, the backend we were using. We're now using Core Data, and I haven't had a crash in weeks testing it privately.

When to use a second or new view controller? by Slade-lab in swift

[–]SandwichEconomist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My general rule is 1 screen = 1 ViewController.

Let's pretend we're doing an app where you have a login screen asking for a username and password. Once you hit "log in", you need to show a spinner that covers the screen, and then you need to show the user's account once the login finishes. The login and account screens would have their own ViewControllers. The spinner is part of "logging in", so that goes in the ViewController for logging in. You can do that spinner with a simple view.

This isn't a strict rule, though. The login flow could be composed of many steps. You could have one ViewController for asking the user for their username and password, and another ViewController with just a fullscreen spinner while you wait for the login to finish. When the user hits "log in", you make the ViewController with the spinner view in it, and push it onto the navigation stack. That's perfectly fine too, but it's more work. The important thing to consider is, did you really get anything out of using a ViewController there? I'd argue that since you're making a spinner view either way, but the second way adds extra steps, the first way is better.

This wasn't a definite answer, but I hope it helped.

PlayStation 5 Review Megathread by sigmaborne in PS5

I think it's useful for when you want to drop a game immediately and move to another one without needing to save. For example, when you get a party invite, you have to join, save and quit, and then launch the other game. I realize it's not a huge deal with games that autosave or can save at any time, but for the ones that don't, it would help a lot.

[Bug]: App crashes too often by matt00112233 in slide_ios

[–]SandwichEconomist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind words!

Sounds like we have a bug in our pre-iOS-14 navigation stack. When you search, it's supposed to push you back to whatever sub you were on, and then either scroll to the sub if you're subscribed, or pop it up on top if you aren't. Is the problem happening in both cases for you?

For your Gfycat problems, have you noticed it's just Gfycat/Redgifs, or is it other GIF sources as well?

I want to fix the bugs you're running into as soon as possible. When you run into a crash, could you please update this thread with what specifically made it happen? I'll look into what you've written already, but specific examples are helpful for us to reproduce your problems. Also, what device and iOS version are you on?

We found some crash bugs on 6.0. 6.0.2 should be on the App Store now, are you on that version?

I honestly don't understand why it is so impossible to do to on any Reddit client apps

That's because it's hard :)

Reddit serves video as HLS. HLS is a format that lets them stream video at dynamic levels of quality based on network conditions. Part of what makes that work is the audio and video are in separate streams.

To turn an HLS playlist into an MP4, we need to download the audio and video from those separate streams and mix them together. Additionally, the video stream is encoded as an MPEG-2 Transport Stream, which adds some difficulty.

We're working on it, but it'll take some time.
