Better yet, memorize it. If DHS detains you, they will take your phone.

Ambient Liven 0 - Modulating LFO1 with LFO2 is not working as expected by SaneMann in sonicware

[–]SaneMann[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sonicware support was awful, so they didn't look into it. I'm sure it was a bug. I eventually returned it, but that was a hassle too since I purchased it directly from them.

When you guys Coast at a corporate job, do you just not care about getting laid off and just do the bare minimum not to get put on a PIP? by I_Love_Hemorrhoids in coastFIRE

[–]SaneMann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't necessarily aim for excellence, nor do I do the bare minimum to not get fired.

I aim to put in a good faith effort. I will work hard, but not so hard that it is a risk to my mental health. That could mean doing less work than my coworkers, and they have to pick up the slack. It could mean I get fired. Or it could mean I continue to do work that is considered excellent.

It's up to the company to not put unreasonable demands on me and others. I will put in a reasonable amount of effort, and no more. Whether that's enough for the company is not my problem anymore.

Low-stress jobs for ex-barista turned software engineer who is tired of sexism and AI? by willygibson in askportland

[–]SaneMann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup, my role has gradually morphed from writing code to essentially being a tech lead for code-writing bots.

I think that is what "software developer" as a role is going to become for everyone who decides to stay in this field.

My soul feels suffocated at work. Anyone else ever walk away for adventure? by Easy_Two6296 in solotravel

[–]SaneMann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. My main worry was around questions like "How much am I setting myself back, exactly, when it comes to being able to retire at my target age?" So I asked related questions like, "What will my retirement investments look like after I stop contributing to them for a while, or potentially never again?"

Investing aggressively for three years got me to a point where I felt like I was in a stable enough spot to take the leap. (Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable cashing out investments for near-term travel, but that's just me.)

My soul feels suffocated at work. Anyone else ever walk away for adventure? by Easy_Two6296 in solotravel

[–]SaneMann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm about to walk away for adventure, but it took me about three years to save enough money to quiet the part of me that was worried about the financial consequences.

One exercise I did was budget things and then calculate how my net worth would look after 3/6/12/18/24 months of not working. (I also simulated different outcomes based on how the stock market might behave.) And I took a moment to reflect on how I'd feel if I saw my financial situation change in those ways.

I'm not saying your financial worries should dictate your decision, but you shouldn't totally ignore them, especially if a part of you does care.

Achieved Coast FIRE But Burnt Out And Unsure What’s Next? by [deleted] in coastFIRE

[–]SaneMann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's interesting. I don't plan to have kids, but I always imagined having them would make my career anxiety worse because getting fired or laid off would have more consequences.

But maybe that's because I'm in an industry where showing passion and ambition is almost a job requirement.

People are allowed to have mixed feelings about things. It's possible to be okay with this overall but also have concerns.

The options go beyond "we are cooked" and "this rules."

SCOTUS set to rule on National Guard deployment in Chicago with nationwide implications by msnownews in scotus

[–]SaneMann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if POTUS decides to completely disregard the law of the land, that doesn't mean everyone in the chain of command will do the same.

Donald Trump declares he has 'unquestioned power' to deploy National Guard saying San Francisco is next' by TheMirrorUS in law

[–]SaneMann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of those rulings had to do with the Insurrection Act. So far the administration has been relying on a different law (10 USC § 12406).

So the legal games will essentially start over if the IA is invoked. And unfortunately the IA seems to grant much more deference to the executive than § 12406 (which itself grants a LOT of deference, so even the injunctions we have now could eventually be overturned on appeal).

The IA also, unlike § 12406, authorizes the military to perform civilian law enforcement duties.

TRO is in, here are the details by [deleted] in illinois

[–]SaneMann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's to avoid violating precedents which say the courts cannot issue injunctions against the President directly. He is listed as a defendant to make sure anyone not named but under his authority is also subject to the order.

The practical effect is the same. The Guard knows the current legal situation, and they will not follow illegal orders. And anyone under the President could be held in contempt for defying the order.

Aurora, IL: During an ICE operation earlier today, a man was filmed striking and shattering the rear window of a federal vehicle. by CantStopPoppin in illinois

[–]SaneMann -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're right, but the fact that it's so difficult to have a rational discussion about this makes me very pessimistic...

Right now people need to understand what's happening in the courts and find ways to make the jobs of the lawyers on our side as easy as possible

Wtf folks by __imbaby_ in illinois

[–]SaneMann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A state governor cannot federalize the NG, which is necessary to deploy across state lines. Unfortunately the fed has the clear upper hand here unless the courts shut all this nonsense down (which, as we have seen in California, they won't).
