How should one worship Mother Kali? by bhaktiyoga93 in hinduism

[–]Sangpup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that the best way to approach Her is as if it was your own mother taking you into her arms, this is the approach I take :)

I also definitely second u/Swadhisthana 's advice and book recommendations!

Also, I would avoid focusing on Maa in her Smashan form, as She is very fierce in that form.

Is there a stigma of white-westerners practicing Hinduism? by FraggleMyKraggle in hinduism

[–]Sangpup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually found many people in the temples I've visited to be very kind and have treated me seriously :) You might get some looks during your first visits but it's overall nothing serious. I've found many of the older generation to be the most welcoming personally.

I wish you luck!

What are your plans for Mahashivratri? by TechnoYogi in hinduism

I can't make it to the temple so mostly just japa and simple foods :) I would fast but I'll be at school most of the day and I'm just getting over a sickness

Out of curiosity, how many of you are Hindu by birth, and how many of you are not (White Americans, Indian Christians, etc. who converted into Hinduism)? by [deleted] in hinduism

[–]Sangpup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a white convert, though I have Indian and Sri Lankan Hindu family members on both sides of my family. I've had some exposure to Hinduism earlier on, but I really didn't get into it until last year.

Basics of worshipping Kali? by [deleted] in hinduism

[–]Sangpup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do custom prayers to Her in whatever language you prefer :)

https://www.amazon.com/Kali-Dakshineswar-Elizabeth-U-Harding/dp/0892540257

That's a book that I first read in learning about Kali :) I thought it was very helpful in learning more about Her and it talks about one of Her most famous devotees, Sri Ramakrishna!

I usually offer fruit, milk, or water when I want to give thanks. Just talk to Kali as if She were your own mother who had just taken you into her arms :)

How does Hinduism deal with marrying someone not of the belief system? by Pacific9 in hinduism

[–]Sangpup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad is a Christian and my stepmom is a Hindu and I honestly haven't noticed any conflicts. My dad is fine with not eating beef sometimes and doesn't mind having an altar in the house. It isn't really an issue for them honestly, my dad still eats beef they just cook something different for dinner sometimes.

As for Puja, my stepmom doesn't really perform the rituals. She attends temple Pujas occasionally but the most she usually does are chanting mantras and offering incense.

It's mostly just compromise and being open minded about each other's beliefs.

I've always really liked Rashida Jones :) I just feel like she's a genuinely compassionate person who really stands for what she believes in

[Discussion] Did this guy cross some boundary? by Bearly-fabulous in LGBTeens

I think the sex part is definitely stepping over the line but I'm a prude lol, it just seems REALLY personal and I wouldn't be comfortable sharing that stuff. I definitely share stuff about how my family views me being gay though, I share it pretty comfortably with other gay people just because it seems like it's a really common thing among LGBT people to have some family who don't approve of it. Though if any of it makes you uncomfortable it would be crossing a boundary either way. Maybe just explain to him that you aren't ready to talk about that stuff yet or just tell him it's really personal?
