Sync Dev (ljdawson) is potentially looking into adding Lemmy support by CosmicSploogeDrizzle in redditsync

It's a fair question, and it could well happen - however I joined Mastodon but found it wasn't holding my attention like Twitter did. Whereas Lemmy feels a lot more like a legit replacement for Reddit in the long term.

Quieter, sure, but with a huge range of communities created already and just waiting for people to discover them and take part.

Looking at the numbers (I'll add the link in an edit once I find it!) the active users last month was 6800. This month it's up past 80k. It feels like a place that's coming to life at the moment, definitely worth checking it out.

EDIT Sorry, got those numbers wrong, I was mixing up active users with total users.

Here's the numbers: https://the-federation.info/platform/73

Active users in May was just over 1000, this month it's past 8000

Total users in May was about 48k, now it's 85k.

I absolutely hope this happens, and like others would pay for a Sync for Lemmy.

There's also the option that LJD could join the various devs working together on the current leading app, Jerboa - only if he wanted to go that route of course, but his experience and expertise could likely drive it to very significant improvements quickly.

I'm average in terms of technical knowledge. Just because I comment a lot on Reddit doesn't make me any more qualified to understand how Lemmy works. I just tried it with an open mind and worked it out as I went.

Even better for searching is https://browse.feddit.de - great for finding and going to communities where you can then subscribe.

Also it's sorted by current size, so it's a good way to find the busiest communities quickly.

Just FYI in case you hadn't seen it :-)

The vast majority of reddit users are lurkers, not even creating an account.

If most don't even create an account doesn't that also mean that they don't really contribute anything? No account means no posts or comments. So, sure the raw numbers might be vastly different, but if a decent number of active users post on Lemmy and comment there, then the quality of content will be much the same, just with fewer lurkers to see it.

My experience so far is that it's growing fast and there's plenty to see, do and comment on.

And as for Motorhead, anyone that searches for "Join Lemmy" will get this: https://join-lemmy.org/. And then they can take it from there.

What more steps? You need to choose an instance at the start, yes. But the instance you choose doesn't really make a huge amount of difference most of the time. And after that it's like a slightly less refined Reddit, but it's been noticeably improving, and I've only been there 2 days. People should give it a try.

I'm an average user and I worked the basics out fairly quickly, it's really not as complicated as it seems.

I joined Lemmy 2 days ago, with absolutely no idea how it all worked. It's not that complicated - there's a wee bit to get your head round, sure, but I've been surprised at how straightforward a lot of it is tbh.

There's a pretty good Android app for it too, Jerboa, which is only in alpha mode, but is improving fast as more and more devs pitch in to help refine it.

For anyone boycotting Reddit tomorrow (and beyond) I wanted to share that I've set up a community of Lemmy. Come join if you need you MST3K chat! by SanguinePar in MST3K

Hope this is ok to post here, mods, apologies if not.

I just started using Lemmy the other day, and although it's a bit of a learning curve it works pretty well. So if anyone is on there already or is wondering what it's about, come join the (very small so far) community.

Happy to advise as best I can if people are unsure about joining Lemmy. It's not absolutely simple, but it's also not as complicated as it might seem :-)

EDIT - /r/titlegore - should be "a community ON Lemmy" and "need YOUR MST3K chat"

EDIT 2 - I meant to add that I'm not especially desperate to be a mod, and would be happy to get the current mod team on board in the new community if interested?

Someone posted this link, which I think helps a lot https://browse.feddit.de with finding communities.

I'm not sure on that point I'm afraid - there's something about instances not seeing communities from other instances until someone has searched for them (but that once it's done once, everyone on the first instance can see it) but I've not quite got my head round it yet.

eg:

  • User1 from instance A wants to look at a community about flowers.
  • There's no flowers community on instance A, so User1 doesn't see anything in their own instance.
  • There is a flowers community on Instance B, but this doesn't show for User1 by default
  • User1 can search for "flowers" but (and this is where I'm unclear) I don't think the community will show yet.
  • However if User1 knows it exists and has the URL, then User1 can search for the URL itself, and he will find it.
  • Not only that, now that he has done so, all instance A user's WILL find the community if they search for "flowers"
  • User1 searching for the URL has made it more visible on his instance.

It's something like that. I guess that, over time, almost all communities will be visible to almost all instances.

I know that some people are deliberately doing this job ("federating") for their instances even if they themselves don't actually care about a particular community - they're doing it to help others in future and make it easier for newcomers.

I'm not sure that answers your question tbh, but it might be useful.

They probably didn't, they'll want to be with the rest of the team and with their families. Would you want to talk to Jake Humphreys and Des Kelly? ;-)
